"The Las Vegas Story", originally released in 1984, was the third album from The Gun Club . The album marks the return of Kid Congo Powers to the The Gun Club after spending a few years with The Cramps . This was also the last Gun Club record with bassist Patricia Morrison, originally of The Bags and Legal Weapon , and later a member of The Sisters of Mercy . The vinyl reissue of The Las Vegas Story will be out March 13th [...]

The Gun Club were a very unique band that blended elements of Roots Rock, Blues, Country, Rockabilly and Punk for a style completely their own. Starting out in 1980 in LA, the band was formed by singer/guitarist Jeffery Lee Pierce, Brian Tristan on Lead Guitar, Don Snowden on bass and Brad Dunning on drums. The band initially started out as The Cyclones with Pleasant Gehman on vocals and played Rockabilly, but the singer left after one show and the group continued on as The Creeping Ritual. It was around this time during the bands early beginnings where Don Snowden and [...]

This is how we rock and roll. The Stooges, The Cramps, The Gun Club, the muthafuckin' blues. "Leave the Light On" has the energy, conviction, and raw power that make the best rock and roll. Yeah this rips. Bummer High are a band from Vancouver that are into old country, Spacemen 3, and newer bands like Demon Claws. The sound on "Old Chief" reminds a bit of The Gun Club. Yep, they're that legit. Bummer High - Old Chief Bummer High ( Myspace ) ( Facebook ) Rating 8.6

I've seen The Gun Club perform live about a half-dozen times and the band makes both my "Top 10" best and worst concert lists. When they were "on", I haven't seen another band that could top their swamp-rock blues sound. When they were "off", it was a complete train wreck. The last time I saw Jeffrey perform live was one of the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Quartet shows and it was, unfortunately, a train wreck where Pierce was noticeably fighting with guitarist Romi Mori and kept turning up his amp to drown out her playing. Over the [...]

Photography by Aaron Giesel First came post-punk cult hit Border Radio and then came Sugar Town , a film about the music industry, aging rock stars, and the women in their lives. Now Strutter , the final chapter in Allison Anders and Kurt Voss' unexpected trilogy, is well underway. Allison and Kurt have been friends since UCLA film school and even share matching tattoos of the girl in chains on the back of Leonard Cohen's first album. This interview by Lainna Fader. Gather round kiddies and let the old man tell you about a fella named Kid Congo Powers . One mean guitar player this Kid, not like one of those shredder types, but mean like he'd bite your nose clean off just for asking if he had the time. Way back in the day, Kid co-founded a little outfit called The Gun Club with a wildman name Jeffrey Lee Pierce. After that band went south, he did time with scum-a-billy masters The Cramps , not to mention Nick Cave. Not a bad resume, [...]

Along with the dirty guitars and guttural vocals of garage rock and punk music comes the staple raunchy song about sex. If you're the Winks, one song isn't enough (just read their track list ). Here are a few classics and recent favorites. And despite the Winks' unbelievably crude lyrics, there's no denying a catchy melody. No Bunny - "Do The Fuck (Yourself)" (from First Blood ) Diarrhea Planet - "Ghost With A Boner" (from Aloha! ) Replacements - "Gary's [...]

....or how Johnny cooked up How Soon Is Now ? How Soon Is Now? - don't forget the question mark! - is the song that people who dislike The Smiths like. Those same people who would lazily decree The Smiths as ' miserable ' whilst frantically waving a 123 of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now right under your nose (" Exhibit A, M'Lud !") embraced How Soon Is Now? as if it were the returning of The Messiah himself. It's true! As well as being a dancefloor filler from Dublin [...]

By Meriah Doty "You have never heard this before until now," Henry Rollins explained as he sat center-stage at the Echoplex during a listening party he orchestrated as a fundraiser for KCRW-FM on Thursday night. It was a sold-out show featuring music he cannot play on his radio show and personal stories from his past. It did not disappoint. Known for his eclectic taste and obsession with some of the rarest music in the world, Rollins played 24 "top-shelf" cuts of never-released songs (sometimes comparing them to their "official" versions) [...]

"Although I´ve howled across fields and my eyes turned grey, Are yours still the same? Are you still the same?" One original, one cover. The rather manic Gun Club version stems from their masterful second album Miami (´82). Howl, Jeffrey, howl, you maniac you. Mark Lanegan´s equally intense, brooding acoustic take on the song can be found on his recommended I´ll Take Care Of You (´99). "Carry home, I have returned, Through so many highways, and [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Kid Congo Powers has a unique way of describing 'Ten Greasy Pieces,' the collection of mail-order singles he and his latest band, the Pink Monkey Birds, are set to release later this year. "You buy a prescription," Congo said Friday night at New York's Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. He might have said "subscription," as the group's label, In the Red, will issue the five 7" records one at a time, but his choice of words was quite apt. Congo's [...]

Yesterday i saw the trailer for the new M. Night Shyamalan movie "Devil". Apparently it's a return to form for the Indian born director. After the classics of "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" there was the decent enough "Signs" but then in my opinion his features since then have pretty much been in a steady decline. None more so than his latest effort "The Last Airbender" which has also been panned by media and critics alike. But "Devil" definitely has the potential to be a resounding edge of the [...]
