Thursday, May 3, 2012 For the sake of not having to write the same intro a million different ways throughout the rest of time, just know that this column avoids the overly long and sometimes dull process of full film reviews and instead opts to break things down based on what I thought going in, what happened while I was there and what I learned at the end of it all. Thanks for reading! The Breakdown - Headhunters The Impression: [...]

'Headhunters'/'Hodejegerne' (UK Release: Spring 2012) // Words: Lauren Johnson-Ginn Adapted from the 2008 Jo Nesbø novel of the same name, 'Headhunters' is a cleverly crafted thriller with plenty of gasp-inducing plot twists and a generous amount of dark humour. The film follows the shady dealings of thoroughly unlikeable, philandering recruitment executive/part time art thief Roger Brown ( Aksel Hennie ). Standing on the brink of bankruptcy, Roger goes to extreme lengths to [...]

FOOTCRAB - RASHAD & SPINN FOOTWORK REMIX by addisongroove

This jawn is hella smooth. Hawthorne Headhunters is a duo consisting of Black Spade and Coultrain-and even if I wasn't currently under the influence of alcohol, I'm sure I would still feel at peace while listening to this. Their debut album Myriad of Now is set to drop sometime next year. drink the kool aid:
When Hawthorne Headhunters released their " If You Were My Baby " single last week, we were hearing some of the newest material from the quartet-turned-duo of rapper-producer Black Spade and singer Coultrain. The original lineup also featured producers I,Ced and Proh Mic, who left Hawthorne Headhunters following their 2009 EP to focus on solo projects. But they haven't forgotten about that effort yet as I,Ced recently liberated the original version of highlight "Manifest Station" from the vaults. The track heard on the EP was reworked because it featured samples the Headhunters [...]
Hawthorne Headhunters - a quartet-turned-duo made up of Black Spade and Coultrain - has hip-hop, electro-soul, funky sensuality sounds and "If You Were My Baby" and "Teleport" give us a sense of their movement. Myriad of Now is slated to drop in 2012 and damn. 'Damn', because these tracks are too cool. These synthesizer laden, apropos lyrical touches and overdub vocals could remind you of Dam-Funk . They say, "It's like electricity is all up in my skin," when talking about their "baby," though it's true about their music too. Whoever they sound like, whatever they sound like, [...]

We all like a good play on words, don't we? It seems musicians are just as keen, with people like Com Truise, Bos Angeles and countless others all staking their claim of the 'funny band names' pie. If I had to pick one of my favourites from the list, both musically and punically (yeah I know it's not a word), then it would have to be Pariah Carey . The project is lead by Jheri Evans, and he's gone and dropped a new song in the form of 'Betrayal Of The Headhunters'. Listen and enjoy.
The quartet-turned-duo of Hawthorne Headhunters came together two years ago when rapper-producer Black Spade ventured from St. Louis to Southern California in search of inspiration. While there, he formed the psych-soul outfit with producers I,Ced and Proh Mic and singer Coultrain, whose sometimes-wobbly vocals are a great complement to their equally bouncy production style. In the ensuing years, which included the release of eponymous EP, Proh Mic and I,Ced left the group to focus on solo endeavors. Following their departure, the remaining Headhunters crafted a full album's worth of material. Although we won't be [...]

iTunes: If You Were My Baby - Single - Hawthorne Headhunters In search of some new, Black Spade migrated out west to soak up the vibrant Southern California vibes and promptly met producer Proh Mic at the famed Do-Over. The two hit it off and began toying with music, soon bringing I,Ced, another St. Louis expat in LA, into the fold. The collective was taking shape and drew their moniker from 'Ced's residence in Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives reached out to their old comrade Coultrain and he eventually moved out to [...]

front 242 - "headhunter" (download) My favorite Front 242 song ever. From 19882s Front By Front . The perfect melding of somewhat angry industrial music and somewhat angry synth pop. Such a driving beat. Brings back many memories for me. buy

Tony Williams aka Addison Groove returns with a new 123. You'll know him from last year's 'Footcrab' , the addictive bass/juke anthem that went out on Loefah's Swamp 81 imprint and he's continuing with that dancefloor-ready vibe this time out. Teaming up with Pinch's Tectonic label, Williams hasn't shied away from utilising looped vocals similar to previous releases, but we'll forgive him as 'This Is It' features one of the catchiest hooks you'll hear this year. Complete with pounding 808s, a nod to old style Chicago piano [...]

I had the opportunity to play with Addison Groove when he was called Headhunter late last year during his stop in Jakarta, Indonesia. Ever since, I've been a fan of his sound. Now he's dropping his latest single This is It & Make Um Bounce. THe single is out now on Tectonic.
