Herohill delivers another fantastic compilation, with 'The Bard of Montreal,' their tribute to Leonard Cohen.

The Bard of Montreal . The community of Canadian music is an amazing thing. Here, twenty-five artists signed up to donate time, recording studios and effort to pay tribute to one of Canada's greatest poets. Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas , a record so powerful and alive you start to wonder if Mr. Cohen will ever run out of steam, is the type of record that connects and inspires. It should receive awards - those as indie as the Polaris and those are far reaching as the Junos. Unfortunately, we don't have the means or deep pockets (and no Christmas [...]

We recently came across a track that must’ve been looked over in our inbox. “One Night, One Kiss” by The Russian Futurists is definitely worth a listen, so we’re giving it the buzz it deserved some time ago. The track offers ‘call and answer’ style vocals between Matthew Adam Hart and Heavy Blinkers ’ Ruth Minnikin, done extremely well. The sappy love lyrics and other fluffy ingredients would be enough to bake any “cheese”-cake however, that’s not the impression we’re left with at all. Contextually in the vein of Stars’ “My Favourite Book” (Canada gets [...]

There must be a thousand takes on ‘Little Drummer Boy’, the majority of which are pants but then you have exceptions like the Dandy Warhols ecstatic take. Nova Scotia band the Heavy Blinkers took a pithy view from a new perspective, that of the little boy through the eyes of Mary & Joseph. If that’s not interesting enough for you then Jenn Grant’s voice should be enough to swing it. This is the type of song I search all year for to sign off on before the Christmas break. It's perfect. Hope the next few days go well for you, [...]

The Heavy Blinkers - The Night and I Are Still So Young This group reminds me of the 60s and 70s easy listening groups that were backed by full orchestras. I think that backing is why I love it.

Holiday Sweaters-My First Earthquake Silence Your Drum-Heavy Blinkers Okay, today's X-Mas tune has some Holiday stuff, but also other tunes as well. It's a sampler from Vanguard Records featuring songs from Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, Brandi Carlile , Joshua Radin , Josh Ritter , Needtobreathe , Greg Laswell, Meiko , Brett Dennen , Noise Addict , Dar Williams , Dawn Landes, Erin McKeown , Joe Purdy , Katie Herzig, Serena Ryder and The Watson Twins. After ten years of creating music together the Nova Scotia based band The Heavy Blinkers set out two create a new album. The resulting album, their fifth, is called Health and is a double album with a concept. Jason MacIsaac, the bands only original member, has enlisted the help of renowned artists such as Sondre Lerche(Astralwerks) and Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas (Drag City). However, it is his current surrounding cast that help perpetuate the bands now trademark lush orchestral sound. It's been nearly two years since the original members Andrew Watt and Ruth Minnikin [...]

> The last time I'd seen The Heavy Blinkers live was back in September 2005 at the Casbah in Hamilton , a trio configuration including the band's leader Jason MacIsaac, multi-instrumentalist Dave Christiansen and at-the-time new hired vocalist Jenn Grant (who of course, went on to have her own successful solo career). I'd had the opportunity to chat briefly with Jason (who was really a nice guy, btw) who'd mention working on a new album, but 4 years later and I'd lost hope on whether it'd ever see the light of day. [...]

The Heavy Blinkers return with a Christmas song from their highly anticipated new album "HEALTH". "Silence Your Drum" is the new Christmas song from The Heavy Blinkers and the first glimpse at their forthcoming double album, Health. The song is the story of the fabled little drummer boy, as told through the perspective of Joseph & Mary. The song features lead vocals from Jenn Grant backed the group's trade-mark lush orchestral arrangements. Recently named one of "The Greatest Bands You've (Probably) Never Heard' by Spin [...]

I've been saving some of the better xmas/holiday songs we've been getting sent with the intent of posting them next week as a run-up to Christmas, but this one seemed too good to save. If you need some musical comfort to wrap around yourself on this bleak, wintery night, Silence Your Drum from The Heavy Blinkers (and featuring Jenn Grant), is the perfect answer. Jason MacIsaac and his Heavy Blinkers hold somewhat of a mythical position in the Halifax music scene, having received some hefty praise from some heavyweight sources in the past, so the [...]
It's been so long since this band released something, that people may have forgotten about them, but I haven't! The Heavy Blinkers is a band who have given me so many wonderful musical experiences during the years, and their sense of melody and harmony is outstanding. Their lush orchestral pop has by many been compared to Burt Bacharach or the Beach Boys , and the last time we heard from them on record was in 2005, - on the brilliant "The Night and I are still so young" . [...]
Halifax band The Heavy Blinkers are offering up a free Christmas download with "Silence Your Drum". The song is a retelling of "The Little Drummer Boy" from the perspective of Joseph and Mary, who think the noise is disturbing everyone's sleep. Jenn Grant provides lead vocals for the track. You can watch the video for the track here: The song will also appear on the band's forthcoming

![SONG OF THE DAY [#395]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1407629_lg.jpg)
'try telling that to my baby' | the heavy blinkers this is another one of those songs i sent out when this was an e-mail list, but it's such a great song [and even greater video], that i decided to post it again in hopes that if you haven't already beheld the heavy blinkers greatness, that you would now have the chance. the heavy blinkers--from halifax, nova scotia--released four albums between 1998-2004, but have been relatively quiet ever since. jason, apparently, has been working on the fourth long player ['health'] for [...]

Tavet Gillson made the dopest album cover . This thing is real realz. I have to get this guy to design a header for us. My horoscope: This is a significant phase; what you have and what you want come very close to matching. Even if there are some larger pieces of your life that are out of place, the smaller ones fit so well that the flow of the day is easy. If your life feels relatively unexciting, take it slow and use this time to [...]
