The Heligoats quietly entered its 10th year of existence in 2009. Chris Otepka (formerly of Troubled Hubble) always used the moniker as a separate songwriting outlet, even while touring and recording with other full-time, well-acclaimed bands. Releasing at least one record per year since the first The Heligoats release in 1999, Chris has worked on the band constantly for ten years. Otepka's adventures, wrapped in delirious art craft and song wit, allow his freaked-out but devoted supporters to wade into his odyssey as deeply as they choose to challenge themselves. The [...]

Oh Darren, thanks for posting that massive post featuring all those wonderful artists that have been e-mailing us. I feel slightly ashamed that neither of us had been able to find the time to post about those bands sooner. But some good did come of this, I fell in love with The Heligoats. That's right. L-O-V-E. H-E-L-I-G-O-A-T-S. Check them out.
I am SORRY. The last couple months have been crazy since I moved back to school, and because of that I've had less time for checking the blog e-mail. I've gotten tons of talented people sending me shit, and I haven't had the time to post a good portion of it. This is my making like Little Boots and remedying this shitty situation. Here's thirteen artists I've really enjoyed from my e-mail, listed from oldest to newest. Disclaimer: All of these artists deserve far longer write-ups; these accumulation posts won't be happening often if [...]
Last night's visit from Nashville's Clem Snide and Chicago's Heligoats was one of those shows all too common in Kansas City: A famous-elsewhere indie act comes to our town and only a few people show u... Being big fans of Eef Barzelay / Clem Snide , we've been looking forward to this show at Mohawk Saturday night for quite some time now. The alt-country band will be joined by fellow ATH favorites The Broken West and opening act The Heligoats . Tickets are available now for $10 or $12 at the door. Music starts at 9pm. Muzzle of Bees photographer Ed Oliver hit up Cafe Montmartre last night to check out the triple bill of Heligoats , Plants and Animals , and Clem Snide . Once again (and with thanks to Kate!) he returns with some amazing shots from the night! Clem Snide is out in support of his latest record, Hungry Bird , which we can definitely recommend. Via Ed's Twitter, it sounds like Plants and Animals were pretty sweet live as well. Drop a comment with your thoughts/reviews [...]

There's lots to see this week in the indie/pop/folk/alt-country scene! My calendar is overflowing and even though I know most of you don't even live in Chicago, well, I'm hoping someone reads this and goes to one of these gigs to tell me how they went. I don't always get out when I want to... it's complicated. But that makes getting out all that much more worth it! So this week, you'd better be alive on Tuesday! Clem Snide with The Heligoats at Schubas [...]

We ran into Chris Otepka earlier this year in Austin performing under the pseudonym, The Heligoats . You may remember his previous band of six years - Troubled Hubble - played here in the past at Insomnia by past DJs. We were at the Yarrr! PR event pictured, sponsored by Greyday Records and in smaller ways by Insomnia Radio (we paid for the pirate/elvis sandwiches!). Needless to say, fans of Chris have been waiting for years for a new release and he's just delivered with the End of All Purpose EP . [...]

A few months ago, I wrote a piece about how hard it was for artists to make money on the road, given then-high gas prices. Since then, gas prices have gone down, but I don't expect them to stay that way, and they are still twice as much as they were a decade ago. My main point was to challenge the conventional wisdom that artists "make their money on the road." Idolator put the word out to some artists to see if they would follow in the footsteps of Hope For Agoldensummer and open up [...]
"14,000 Things to be Happy About," by Troubled Hubble: Well, I couldn't think of 14,000 things, but here are a few items that have recently brought me joy: 1. It's Halloweeeeen! 2. 30 Rock is back! And very funny! 3. There's news about the upcoming Metric album!!!!! 3. 4 MORE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4. Chris Otepka, the guy who sang the song featured in the video above, is hard at work on an album
