From September 7th to 11th, music obsessives in Portland, OR trekked between 21 venues to see nearly 200 bands, fighting dehydration, worn heels, and sticky wristbands, all for the glory of Musicfest NW (MFNW). What were the highlights? Every person will give you a different answer. Was it Seattle radio station KEXP's free day shows at the Doug Fir including the Horrors, Sebadoh and the Antlers? Watching the sun set with Band of Horses, Iron & Wine, or Explosions in the Sky outdoors at Pioneer Square? The Thermals stagediving and blowing out their amp at the EMP Backstage? Legendary [...]

Time is slipping away. Shed Your Love - The Helio Sequence Keep Your Eyes Ahead 2008 ( Sub Pop ) Drank the dark wine of the New York night My shattered mind across the borderline Spent the night in someone else's arms Shed your love, shed your love Shed your love, shed your love On a subway train before the dawn The ride was short but my thoughts were [...]
"Tiny Fingers" is lush and exotic, with sounds of broken sitars, brass, and wind chimes backing a gentle acoustic strum. Like everything on Red Velvet Snow Ball, it would be the perfect accompaniment to a day of greenery – lying in the green grass, staring at the green trees swaying above you, and perhaps indulging in something that would make the sky appear green.

The indie-folk quartet Ivan & Alyosha comes to us with a nod to Dostoyevsky. Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

The Helio Sequence Three who-knew-the-Sharks-were-going -to-be-the-weak-link-in-my-wor ld-of-sports-fandom reasons to just go to Lincoln Hall and do the following already... 1. First, I'll try my hand at coming up with something original for Portland's The Helio Sequence . They are from Portland. You'll love their Northwest indie sound. You know, swirling guitars, chiming at times, kind of poppy. It's definitely easy to digest and quite ready for a car commercial, which, what with all the hipster stuff finding its way into commercials recently, isn't even a diss. Not at all. [...]

As we previously reported , Chicago's best multi-venue, dead of winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows , returns for its seventh year next week. Well, the good people at Lincoln Hall and Schubas , who are spearheading the whole sha-bang, have put together this really awesome mixtape featuring a great number of acts participating in the event from locals A Lull and In Tall Buildings to national buzzbands such as The Besnard Lakes and Twin Shadow . TMK 2011 kicks off next Wednesday with [...]

It is unprofessional to reveal a bias, but if you are a quality artist from New Jersey then you are certainly likely to get my attention. It helps even more if you perform regularly at The Stone Pony, a trademark Jersey venue that my parents frequented when they were in their teens. My teenage self [...]

It's back! Chicago's top winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows returns for its seventh year from January 12 - January 16, 2011. TNK has become one of Chicago's most anticipated musical events because not only is it in a dead time, musically and weather-wise, but it serves up the best of both national and local acts. A quick glance at the initial schedule looks promising thus far. There are big names such as Besnard Lakes and Freddie Gibbs performing alongside up-and-coming new local groups such as psych outfit A Lull [...]
One of the hardest thing's I've ever had to do was read an article about puberty to a class of middle school children. It was written by Bill Cosby. I was sweating buckets and his humor did not lubricate the ordeal AT ALL. The second most difficult thing was to make this mix. A Desert [...]

Photo taken by the amazing Anne Kieblesz - Flickr It's been a good three months since I've intentionally spent more than a few days obsessing over my music folder, reliving every memory for a better sense of direction... but Summer has finally come to an end and a call for change is the only real reason one can find to get through it. I was originally going to present this as some sort of "b-side" to my Summer Mix , but I wanted nothing to do with a format that'd have me [...]
Continuing the surge of experimental-pop from Montreal, Pop Winds excel in diverging colorful psychedelia and indie-rock to create a sound that is familiarly addictive, yet still relatively incomparable. On "Owl Eyes", the duo's vocals combine for multiple harmonies over squirts of brass and synth arpeggios, the wide variety of synths sliding and squirming all over [...]

Well well, happy Monday to ya! Did you have a good weekend? Yeah, me too. A bit quick though... Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, they are all "too quick", but man, Saturday specifically just flew by. It's all good though, we put in a little extra effort on Sunday to sloooow iiiit dooooown aaaaaa smmmmiiiiiiiiiiiiiidddddddgggg ggge. Niiiiiice.................. Okay, before we get to the goodness, got some heads up to throw your way. First up, ads! Yep, we sold out. And by sold out, I mean we are [...]
Brooklyn's The Walkmen are heading out on tour this fall to support Lisbon -- saw em in London in 2006, planning to see them in San Francisco in September, you'd do well to check them out at a theater near you. 8/6: Lollapalooza Festival, Chicago, Illinois 8/6: Double Door, Chicago, Illinois, w/ Warpaint (Official Lollapalooza after party | SOLD OUT) 8/12: Governors Island, New York, NY w/

The Delta Spirit was a band that I never seem to seek out in my music library, but I was always pleasantly surprised when they find their way through my speakers. Like a more alt-country Harlem Shakes or a less synth-reliant Helio Sequence, the San Diego based quartet has carved out a healthy cult following through some notably energetic live shows, one of which won over former ATG guest writer Claire a few years back. The band stepped their game up with their 2010 release, History From Below , which has generally been quite well received in [...]
