Music festivals have come and gone in Canada, but one which seems to have taken hold and established an identity is Montreal's Osheaga Music and Arts Festival . Conveniently scheduled right at the end of July, and picturesquely located on its own island by the Saint Lawrence River, it brought fans from across the country and elsewhere up close and personal with nearly 100 bands and DJs. It's not quite as big as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, or Coachella yet, but Osheaga is well on its way to becoming a preferred summer destination. I lost track of the number of times artists [...]

Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]

Trevor from Montreal's The High Dials contacted me a few weeks ago, asked if maybe I'd throw something up on Donewaiting about his band's upcoming Columbus show. Though The High Dials have released four full-lengths since 2003, the name didn't ring a bell to me, but I took Trevor up on his offer to send me a copy of Anthems for Doomed Youth . Too bad I didn't hear this thing earlier in this year as it would definitely have ended up on my year-end favorites list. I'm not sure [...]

[ download ] [tweetmeme] As the title says, teenage love drives everyone a bit crazy. Your body is stubbornly insisting that things that never mattered much to you before are now the only things in the world that matter at all. People you've known since kindergarten transform into entirely different and more fascinating creatures, especially little Annie who you only used to notice because she tended to cry every time she broke a crayon but suddenly is all curvy and smells nice and every time she touches her hair your toes curl up in [...]
![[Listen/Download] The High Dials- Teenage Love Made Me Insane](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3058816_lg.jpg)
by teepoo The sound is exactly what it sounds like it would be! Montreal's The High Dials delivers a teenage love anthem. Very appropriately, their most recent album is named Anthems From Doomed Youth . Although it sounds almost like it would be a collection of wrist cutting emo songs, it's far from that. Their songs almost mock and poke fun of youth love. Other songs such as Uruguay take you back to Beetles-esque rock songs that are welcome the listener to sing along. [...]

The High Dials hail from Montreal. They're psychedelic-pop rockers who recently released Anthems For Doomed Youth on Rainbow Quartz . Honestly, it was the album title that drew me in and while I was expecting some punk-rock explosion! it instead extols some of the finer qualities of the kind of jams that 602s AM radio used to play. It's a little bit Petty, a little Left Banke, a lot pure pop for now people. And that's the way I like it. Check out two songs from [...]

Of course the High Dials are a psychedelic pop band—just look at the album cover , which resembles a long-lost (and slightly morbid) Woodstock poster. Here's the single "Chinese Boxes," which is laden with vocal harmonies and Byrds -esque guitar leads, all delivered with what sounds like a narcotic exhaustion. It comes from the Montreal band's new LP, Anthems for Doomed Youth . Go to Exclaim! to read the story I wrote about the album last month. MP3: "Chinese Boxes"

On one hand you've got European smokers who, back in the day before tobacco and that other plant were the thing to put in your pipe, puffed on pear leaves. On the other you've got USA Pears suggesting that a pear diet might help to fight cancer . Somewhere in the middle you've got woodwind instruments , furniture , playlists , bands and bands , wine and cheese accompaniment and snacks. What is the best way to use pears? You ask me, shoving them in a pancake is the [...]

Here are The Wheel's Still In Spin's suggested new releases. Elvis Costello – National Ransom. Download "The Spell That You Cast" (mp3). With 16 tracks, this is not a consistently great album, but some of the songs are standouts. Costello returns with the same producer, T-Bone Burnett, and many of the same musicians that made his last album, a bluegrass record. National Ransom mixes an acoustic jazz feel with some country influence and the sound of earlier Costello classics. It's a diverse album and his best in years. The Hentchmen – The Hentchmen. The Hentchmen are a three-piece garage rock [...]

The High Dials hail from Canada and have a sound that immediately calls to mind the jangly psychedelics and country rock of the late 60s. New album (their fourth) is called Anthems For Doomed Youth and is out on November 8th. It is full of soaring vocal harmonies, orchestral flourishes and rousing choruses and while influences are unashamedly worn on sleeves, there is enough originality and imagination to prove the band are more than capable of setting their own musical path. Check out the exuberant taster Chinese Boxes and singalong. Visit [...]

howdy gang. anyone going to voodoo fest this weekend? i shall be there, either saturday or sunday, we havent decided as of yet. in all honesty, i really dont care, or at least i dont think i care, about many of the bands playing, but i figured it would be an interesting time. montreal's the high dials have a new record coming out, their 4th, on 11.2 and is called, anthems for a doomed youth . as for most of the time, i havent heard the entire thing as of yet, its downloading right [...]
