Surprise surprise, even more Brian Wilson/Beach Boys-related love (Mike Love?) from us today. What were you expecting? It's mid-summer and the man himself played Coney Island last night so this one's a no-brainer really. This mix is comprised of a bunch of songs that are either clearly inspired by the Beach Boys OR which we completely subjectively feel could be Beach Boys songs. There's also an oh-so slight chronological flow to the list as well, starting with songs that (to us) hearken back more to their earlier material and progressing a bit towards when [...]

The High Llamas just friended me on MySpace! I've been a Llamas fan since the late 90s, and they've been around even longer. I'm not exaggerating when I say they're one of the best, most underrated pop bands of all time. I'm including three of their older songs to give you some perspective on how awesome they are. You'll recognize the influence of 1960s sunshine pop/baroque pop (esp. Brian Wilson) and jazz (Herbie Mann-style). Sean O'Hagan is the man behind The High Llamas, and somehow, he manages to consistently pump out album [...]
Since we've had Microdisney and The Fatima Mansions, it seems only appropriate to finish with The High Llamas. This was the band that Sean O'Hagen formed after Microdisney split. they have produced records steadily since. But seemingly more of a side-project for Sean than a full time occupation. The High Llamas are nominally a group, which usually includes Microdisney bassist Jon Fell and a

------------------------------ -- 20. The Field - From Here We Go Sublime With the excess of charming indie-pop generating from his native Sweden, Axel Willner likely took a slight risk in choosing the stylistic vein of his solo project, The Field. Though it is just as memorable and addictive as any Swedish pop act you are likely to find this year, Willner's depiction of minimalist techno on his debut, From Here We Go Sublime , turned out to be a perfectly suitable choice. After becoming familiarly acquainted with From Here We [...]
OK, part two of my attempt to fill in the blanks of Rhino's worthy but incomplete Brit Box chronicling the UK indie scene from 1985 - 2000. (Part One, or Disc Five, is here.) Mind you, these are filtered through...
I've been searching high and low for this track for months. I first heard of this track back in the 90's on the Pop is Dead compilation cassette tapes. The 90's rock! Download: High Llamas - Checking In, Checking Out (MP3 format)

Black Ghosts "Any Way you choose to give it" (Playgroup remix) Entendu dans une soirée hier, [...]

With the pressures of Jozi left behind for a week I must admit that Cape Town has pulled out all the stops in seducing me back into her good graces. With beautiful weather and the pick of gigs to attend this week, how could I possibly complain. With that in mind I thought a quick journey through my current favourites might be in order. Due to some technical mishaps I had to try and rip mp3s off my fortress of ipod security in order to post up these tracks, Ipod access is my pick of the [...]

Sean O'Hagan and The High Llamas are finally back with a new album, "Can Cladders", out this month on Drag City Records. This is their first album since "Beet, Maize and Corn" from 2003. It's so good to hear those fantastic harmonies and string arrangements from them again. Check out this new song, "Winter's day", from Drag City's website. The High Llamas - winter's day

* The High Llamas-Winter's Day
Really slow release schedule this week, undoubtedly due to the Valentine's holiday and the fact that the record industry can coast through this week thanks to the post-Grammy sales surge of the year's past releases. In fact, it's so slow I can even spare you the time of clicking to the jump for the full list... Here they are, all 3 records of interest out this week (click on each for more info): 1. The Eternals - Heavy International 2. Times New [...]

one reason i dont report on too many "up and coming" artists is that i find it difficult to put my stamp of approval on an artist after listening to merely one or two songs. it may not mean much to you dear reader, but it does to me. i try to report [...]

MP3: THE HIGH LLAMAS "Winter's Day" ( Drag City ) The High Llamas' frontman Sean O'Hagan gives us this melodic 60s-pop-rock-inspired track from the band's eighth album Can Cladders , available in February. See also: www.highllamas.com tags: music | mp3 | indie rock | indie pop

Drag City very quietly added the new song from The High Llamas upcoming record Can Cladders to their homepage. Despite being one of the larger indie labels, Drag City doesn't seem to be playing the same promo games that all the other middling indie labels do (chronicled here yesterday). I think the quality of their releases and the respect the label garners allows them some leeway when it comes to blatant, in-you-face online promotion. Anyway "Winter's Day" is a fine little pagan folk/soul song (think XTC meets Julian Cope). [...]

In the world of underrated British artists, one of my many favorites include The High Llamas , a band formed in 1991 by talented songwriter Sean O'Hagan after the demise of his duo with Cathal Coughlan, Microdisney. Though all six of The High Llamas' studio albums were greeted with warm reviews, they have only seen a minimal commercial success in their native England while they are seemingly nonexistent to the general American audience. I consider that to be surprising consideing the United States' longtime obsession with the Beach Boys. O'Hagan's three decades of songwriting has been long compared to [...]
