It's important to point out that me seeing Craig Finn was very last minute. I heard an interview the other day where Finn was discussing the roots of the title of his new album, "Clear Heart Full Eyes." The new album title is a nod to the TV show, "Friday Night Lights," which possibly ties in as a coincidence that he recorded the release down in Austin. The Texas ties are running deep and the sound of the pedal steel last night spun the typical bar sound that Finn usually evokes with his day job, the Hold [...]
The following is a guest post contributed by Jason: Detroit - While there is an inherent voyeurism in attending any show, it is especially true when it involves a very popular rock and roller pulling out their acoustic guitar and playing a smaller than usual venue. One wonders if years of playing larger venues with a full band has skewed an artists' ability to connect with their audience, or whether their craft has been sharpened through experience. With this thought in mind, it was with high hopes that my companion and I biked down to P.J.'s [...]
Last month, Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn released Clear Heart Full Eyes , his first-ever solo album, and he's lately done a few different in-studio sessions for a few different media outlets. At a couple of those, he's played songs that, for whatever reason, didn't appear on the album. During his session for NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts video session, he did one called "Jeremiah's Blues," a really sad and beautifully written story-song that should've absolutely been on the album. And on a session for Minnesota Public Radio's The Current , he played [...]
I'm lucky enough to have a ticket to see Craig Finn at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco in a couple of weeks, but really, this NPR Tiny Desk Concert is just gorgeous and perfect, and should do in a pinch if you can't see him live. As the man said, "All these mournful, inward-facing songs (including the unreleased "Jeremiah's Blues") require is the Hold Steady singer, his acoustic guitar and the indispensable pedal steel of Ricky Ray Jackson." And that pedal steel? That pedal steel will break your heart.
Mick Rock I will be the first to admit to not really being able to tell where Bradford Cox's Deerhunter ends and his Atlas Sound begins. I know that the former is ostensibly a band and the latter a solo project, but to my ears the hazy, psychedelic rock that each project produces isn't exactly a world apart. Okay, Atlas Sound is more keys, less guitars, but they're both critically adored and don't really do a lot for me, despite on paper being the sort of thing I should totally dig. [...]

Craig Finn – Clear Heart Full Eyes
Early last year, The Hold Steady decided to take a rain check on the album/tour/album/tour roundabout (it can hardly be described as anything so pejorative as a treadmill) they'd been on since heaven was whenever (five albums in eight years, actually), which left their front man, singer and lyricist Craig Finn with time on his hands. A 40-year-old childless bachelor (whatever about his girlfriend status), he could spend his downtime sitting around his Brooklyn apartment by day and going to the bar at night, or he could put the fallow period that might hang heavy to more productive [...]

New music: Cloud Nothings, Craig Finn, Wilco
This past week featured new albums by Cloud Nothings and the Hold Steady's frontman Craig Finn . Cloud Nothings' Dylan Baldi is taking a harder approach than his past offerings with the help of Steve Albini on Attack on Memory . Even though Baldi joked about Albini's influence in a recent interview, the producer's touches are clearly heard on singles No Future/No Past and No Sentiment . [...]

The 11 Best Songs By The Hold Steady
For music releases...the first couple months of a new year is usually a dead time filled with leftovers, new bands, and sophomore albums. It's very hard to make lists for bands with one album since their list is pretty much every song on their debut album. There's really no point in making a list. It's like eating a BLT and then making a list of the five favorite ingredients in the sandwich.

Album Review: Craig Finn – Clear Heart Full Eyes
C | 01.24.11 | Domino | Stream | MP3 | CD | Vinyl You know how every Hold Steady song begins with frontman Craig Finn telling a story over slowly building guitar riffs, with Finn not even singing but preaching, teasing you in before the band explodes into an epic, upbeat, sing-along hook? Now imagine those songs minus the epic explosion. That's Finn's solo album, Clear Heart Full Eyes in a nutshell. Continue reading: Album Review: Craig Finn - Clear Heart Full [...]
