Bowery Presents has easily cemented themselves as the premiere concert promoter in the New York City area, booking shows in their fully-owned and operated venues as well as places like the Beacon and Radio City. After recently expanding their empire to both Boston and Maine, Bowery Presents has now announced that they will be opening a new music venue in Philadelphia to be called Union Transfer . The 600-person venue, which was once home to a train depot, will host about 200 shows a year and will open with a show from Clap Your [...]

Frank Yang I suspect my personal history with My Morning Jacket reads like many others'; discovered them circa At Dawn , was rocked by It Still Moves , had my mind blown by Z and was confounded by Evil Urges . I haven't spent enough time with their latest Circuital yet to know how that chapter will play out, but while I bemoan the absence of even a [...]

This morning, my car sits packed to its dear 2001 Sentra gills. I am heading off into the southwestern climes of the United States, across six states with my seven year-old, a stack of good music and audiobooks, and a hankering for the open road. We'll hit Mesa Verde, see family in Phoenix, sun in San Diego, attend a Dodgers-Padres game (so I can teach him to properly boo LA), camp along the north rim of the Grand Canyon, and stay in various KOA cabins along the way. We plan on s'mores and stargazing, and maybe finding a swimming hole [...]

Words by Jacob Barron This column completes the quartet of seasonal soundtracking opportunities, and, appropriately, marks the column's unofficial one-year anniversary. Happy birthday soundtracking! I know we didn't post autumn until September last year, but whatever! I'm trying to get you a free dessert from Applebee's, soundtracking, so shut up and be cool. In addition to autumn, we've been through winter and spring , leading us inexorably on to summer, which I think is easily the easiest [...]

After bringing the likes of Vampire Weekend and Gogol Bordello to the streets of Philadelphia in 2008, the Popped! Music Festival suffered a number of set backs. LiveNation pulled out of its planned involvement just a month before the 2009 edition was set to begin, forcing the festival to downsize and become part of a Philadelphia street festival. Popped! was not heard from at all the following summer. But it appears the indie-friendly festival is ready to give it another go as it has announced plans to return this fall as a two-day event. Set for [...]

Blogophilia refers to the series of mixes that were developed from promotional mp3s found on different music blogs. As we've grown, we've come to rely less on other blogs and more on what we're sent that we review or feature. We receive a lot of requests to repost old Blogophilia mixes, and have to kindly refuse because of space issues. Well, that's going to change. This summer, we'll feature 2-3 Blogophilia posts a week until we're current. If you've followed this site, you'll know we already maintain links [...]

* including one song that sounds like it's about Florida but isn't, and one song that doesn't sound like it should be about Florida, but is. I wasn't born in Florida, but my family moved here when I was eight years old, and it is home to me. No matter how many times I move away, I am always drawn inexorably back to St. Petersburg, with its gorgeous water, perfect weather, and the best people you could ever hope to meet. Contrary to popular belief, Florida isn't overrun with centenarians; we have our share of [...]
