No matter whether you buy into the Holloys' mythology*, the Los Angeles band's chief mystic and bottle washer Jim Brown has been recalibrating sonic weights and measures for eight years now. (* "Holloys" are intelligent energy frequencies that propel the band's music from a place called Lake Land to a place called Everything, i.e. Earth — which to us seems much more sensible than, say, releasing music on cassette tapes.) Holloys' new album "Suns Lungs" (out today) encases Brown's mind-baking, body-shaking dance-punk in tight polyrhythms and blasts of guitar and trumpet. Over 36 minutes, "Suns Lungs" [...]

► Fishbone at the Bootleg Bar. Fishbone at the Bootleg Bar. The end. And while you're at it, dig further into these OGs who have musically motivated many (No Doubt, Flea, ?uestlove, Les Claypool): narrated by Lawrence Fishburne, the documentary "Everyday Sunshine" fleshes out the storied history of the iconic punk/funk band. ►The New L.A. Folk Fest brings you the Return Of Murder Ballads at the Echoplex; a tribute show to songs about evil-doers and crimes of passion with performances from A/J Jackson ( Saint Motel ), Correatown , Gabriel Hart ( Jail Weddings [...]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =QgCBIo2x-S8 Part of a 24-hour blitz to con you into attending tomorrow night . Memo to aspiring rock bands: list "PEYOTE" among the chief influences on your Myspace and I will probably at least give you a cursory listen. Even better when you can flash the inherent ability to lock into head-nodding hypnotic grooves. In this space, the funk is often the active ingredient, and the LA-based psych-pop quintet The Holloy's bring smoked out, bent-knee bass lines for days. Knock them for being on [...]

The polarization between rappers and rock groups has always bothered me. Granted, one can interpret it as a wise conclusion gleaned from the Durst era, but I suspect otherwise. The last few years have seen arbitrary barriers between genres collapse, with hip-hop producers swiping samples from MGMT, Vampire Weekend, and Radiohead, Dame Dash and The Black Keys conspiring to give Jim Jones creditability among the Soy Ice Cream sandwich set, and even Lil Wayne trying to pretend that Dimebag Darrell isn't just the name of his weed man. Meanwhile, whenever I interview rock groups, I'm often surprised by their appreciation [...]

To be honest, I was sold on the Holloys from the bio alone. It reads: "[i]magine if Phil Collins were the lead singer of Talking Heads, and spent time with psychedelic shamans studying enlightenment. Add dual drummers and you get the holloys." I'll be damned if that doesn't sound both crazy and bad ass. And what is even crazier is that the description is dead on. The Holloys lineup currently consists (based on their Myspace page) of frontman Jim Brown, his brother Bryan Lee Brown, Derek Wood, Alvin DeGuzman, and Mike Elliot. Buoyed [...]

The Holloys produce sound structures; similar to the way sand and wind, over thousands of years, can hack away at rocks and produce eerie and precise architectures. They are diligent: slowly chipping away at a beat or a riff until it is transformed and made sculptural, an integral part of a landscape.
Origami twittereeterood an announcement for this evening: OrigamiVinyl The Phenomenal Handclap band will be filming a special performance tonight @ Origami Vinyl @ 8pm. Come down and check it out its free! And after that head over to the Echo to catch Phenomal... again with the Holloys, Jogger, and White Arrows.

[Happy Wednesday, and happy birthday Wayne Coyne ...] The Phenomenal Handclap Band are one of those acts you have to suspend your disbelief to like. When I saw them at the El Rey Theatre last year , I couldn't get past their preening hippiedom, let alone dial in to their mish-mosh of disco-folk. Some people seem to be applauding, though — the band toured Europe with Franz Ferdinand. Tonight they play at set at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park before headlining the Echo, topping a bill [...]
