Here's the first installment of the Song, by Toad Festive Fifty for 2011 - a collection of the fifty songs I have been enjoying the most this year. The fifty themselves and the precise order can hardly be described as definitive of course, because you know how fluid things like 'favourite' songs can be, but roughly speaking this is the stuff I have been enjoying the most in 2011. Just as a note, in order to make it a broader representation of the bands I've liked the most, I have made it harder and harder for bands to [...]
We currently have 275 unread emails in our site inbox, and that doesn't even include the ones we've marked as "Good Stuff" or "Matt Would Make Out With This". Woefully, all of the writers at TWJ have day/night jobs that require time to grade and recover from, so we are eagerly anticipating the day [...]

Contributed by Trevor Meyer Australian Rockers The Honey Pies have just released their second album Carpe Carpe . "Girl" is a nice, upbeat track. For those of you looking for new rock to sink your teeth into, this song is sure to bring about a feeling of happiness. These guys remind of Mando Diao with more of a surf feel, but decide for yourself. Also, check out their video "Don't Mention the War" off their first album Think of England . It's [...]

The Honey Pies are an Australian four-piece that makes the kind of breezy, 60's R&B-inflected pop and buzzy, punk-inflected rock that never goes out of style, but never quite comes into fashion. They'll be releasing their second long-player Carpe Carp at some time in the future described only as "soon." While you wait for soon to come, enjoy the first single "Girl," an irresistible ray of sunshine. The Honey Pies, "Girl"

These mixes were posted in January and February 2010, the winter of our discontent. Seriously, the blog was on life support during this time. We're through that storm now. 2010 was such a great year for music, and these early mixes show why. Many of the tracks were available in late 2009, but appeared on 2010 releases. Tracks are from late October through late November 2009 Gapless mix ripped at 256k VBR. Download all tracks in one zip file [...]
The lead up to Coachella (see the Coachella Mix) and Record Store Day (extensive RSD mixes with rare songs), meant that we didn't get to all of the Best New Releases for the week of April 12th. In addition to the regularly scheduled releases that week, there were the hundreds of limited edition vinyl releases [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

There are all sorts of holes I could pick in this - the Black Tambourine meets Hill Valley circa 1955 combination is a very, very long way from being original these days, for example - but this is just really fucking brilliantly enjoyable pop music, with enough bite and grizzle here and there to be beyond mere musical pastiche and the kind of lyrics which swing between the affectionately saccharine and the hilariously cynical with such mischief I can't help but love this album. The swoonfully pretty ' ba-ba-paaa 's of DQYDJB are so brilliantly at [...]
The Honey Pies aren't trying to trick you in to anything. They aren't trying to mask their vintage pop-inspirations with muddy fuzz or lo-fi recordings. They're not dunking their luminous sound in anything but a vat of polish. This is unadulterated pop goodness - fast-paced, liable to give you diabetes - with no pretension, no [...]

Hold the phone! Didn't we feature The Honey Pies in our unsigned section not so long ago? We did, and now they're popping up in What's Hot. Check out this song, taken from their album 'Think of England', which is out now: 'Get it Right'

Here's how things work in our music world sometimes: we receive email about an awesome band, we get busy, we lose said email about awesome band, we somehow find said email about awesome band, and then we finally post about awesome band. So here is a bit of a belated post about Australian fuzz-pop band The Honey Pies . As previously stated, I dig their tunes and recommend all fans of the style to pick up the debut LP Think of England in your local record store or on itunes . Here also is a belated [...]

A daily dose of Haruki Murakami Black Sun by Jo Ann Callis " He gave up trying to sleep and went to the kitchen. He made himself some coffee and sat at the kitchen table to drink it, but he felt something bunched up under one foot. It was Sayoko's bra, still lying there. He picked it up and hung it on the back of a chair. It was a simple, white piece of underwear, devoid of decoration. It hung on the [...]

You may recall me mentioning The Honey Pies here before after I caught ear of some of their early tracks. Well, they're finally ready to share their awesome new album Think Of England and I have a few copies to give away. They've cleaned up just enough of the rough edges and left the right bits ragged to maintain "their" sound. It is definitely a progression of the material on last spring's EP Oh Hi We Didn't See You There We're... The Honey Pies. An exciting new act and you can have the full album [...]

Australia's The Honey Pies are the kind of band I love. No nonsense, guitar-laden power-pop that nestles comfortably in a mix that includes Television, The Buzzcocks, The Strokes and anything on All Things Must Pass . Their debut, Think Of England , has more hooks than a tacklebox on opening weekend, and is cheekier than a large-mouth bass. Lead single Get It Right sums it up nicely. MP3 : The Honey Pies - Get It Right

"Think of England" is the title of the bandcamp-released debut by Australian unsigned foursome The Honey Pies . But don't worry-the music is a hell of a lot better than the band's name. If you don't already know, Australia is kind of a hotbed for cool indie rock. The Honey Pies have that organic, slightly rough sound common to many Aussie rockers, but they've also got wit. One of their song titles, "Don't Mention the War," is a nod to a line from my favorite episode of Fawlty Towers. Hell, that [...]
Australian rockers the Honey Pies have announced that they have completed work on their debut album "Think of England". While at first listening to the band they sound heavily influenced by the waves of Strokes imitators that have plagued the internet since the mid-2000s,...
