I can't believe I'll be in New Orleans this weekend . I kept saying this to myself again and again in the days leading up to my departure from Chicago. This wasn't exactly said in excitement, either - no, in fact, you could say it was laced with anxiety and stress. I'd be traveling alone to a city I'd never been to and what's worse, I was sick with a diet version of the flu, and couldn't stop sucking down vitamin D capsules and crackling open Sudafed packets. So, on Wednesday night, I paced around my apartment, muttering things to [...]

I went out to the hazel wood, Because a fire was in my head, And cut and peeled a hazel wand, And hooked a berry to a thread; And when white moths were on the wing, And moth-like stars were flickering out, I dropped the berry in a stream And caught a little silver trout. Fingerbanger 1 : Brombaer, Phole - Globo III (don lowed) -- so good for today. Fingerbanger 2 : Pocket Feat. Steve [...]
Sorry for the absence of this here column last week; I got hit with an acute case of tonsillitis which definitely killed my Monday pretty badly. Felt like I was swallowing razorblades....but the good news is that it got me to the doctor to get some killer horse-pills to clear my junk up, so I [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Marvin Gaye, Quantic, Mr. Scruff "Hot 8 Brass Band - Sexual Healing" What's so good? Jazz (or at least trumpets) have been something of a theme this summer, starting with this Skream track back in May. Now as summer draws to a close, I feel I have a fitting track to round off the jazz [...]
Review by Michelle da Silva (@michdas) Those attending last night's (May 24) Lauryn Hill show at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom hoping to hear the legend sound as she did 13 years ago, probably left feeling a bit disappointed. It's not that the 35-year-old mother of five couldn't sing the way she used to, it's that she [...]

I landed in LA yesterday, got to the Standard had an amazing dinner at Comme Ca, woke up this morning to an inspiring view of LA, it's safe to say I'm feeling a little California love here. Kev slacked on the Sample Saturday post this week so in honor of my return to Hollywood I'm posting a gem guaranteed to light up parties this summer. DJ's you can thank us later... Snoop Dog took over Hip Hop in '93 with the release of Doggystyle, an album which is arguably one of the greatest party records of all [...]

Read Part 1,2, & 3 I don't believe I've ever called Meatloaf by his legal name. His parents named him Kelley, but long before I ever met him, his size dictated a nickname: Meatloaf . [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Download: James Mercer - Journey Through The Past (Neil Young Cover) I first met Meatloaf late in 2004. We both lived in Asheville, NC at the time. We shared a few mutual friends. The first thing that struck me about [...]

Sufjan Stevens let loose another, more electronic, track from his upcoming LP. Sufjan Stevens "Too Much" from The Age of Adz ( download ) Like it? Me, too. But now I'm gonna ruin it for you. Doesn't the chorus of ' Too much, too much, too much … ' remind you a little of Marvin Gaye 's "Sexual Healing"? Especially where he sings ' Wake up, wake up, wake up …' Marvin Gaye "Sexual Healing" No? You're not listening [...]

How we feelin' out there, soul babies? Sincerest wishes that all the good people in the funky universe are fat, happy and healthy on this fine February afternoon... As for myself, I have to admit that I went through a brief phase when I didn't feel particularly inspired to write, but I'm back into my groove now~ and as I'm testifyin' in the title of today's post, I've finally got that feeling again... Scrambling to make up for lost time, I quickly dug up another collection of soulful covers and ill remixes for [...]

All right got a quickie for you today, Snoop Dogg 's atomic classic Who Am I (What's My Name) brilliantly reblown by the The Hot 8 Brass Band [...]

Quite what we have done in the last year to deserve it is anyone's guess, but Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, has seen fit to grace Roskilde with the most stunning conditions again this year. Cloudless skies and temperatures in the high 20s greet us, as well as the festival staples such as low-key security, ample supplies of free water, hardly any queues for beer or food and, as we are in scandinavia, lots of attractive, bronzed folk lounging about. State' s pasty white frame looks somewhat uncooked as we wind through the dust [...]

"When the shadows of this life have gone I'll fly away Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly I'll fly away..." -"I'll Fly Away" - Traditional Hymn On the rare occasions that I get homesick for the U.S. it's for the Deep South, where I spent about half of my life and the good part of my formative years. The two things that I miss most about Dixie are the food and the music. New Orleans is kind of the hub for both of those things down south. When I heard [...]

Phallic symbol "Thanks for the drink," I say, all the while dreading the prospect of choking down the Cuba Libre just handed to me. Ever since Spring Break Jamaica, I've hated rum and I think I came out of the womb disgusted by the syrupy-sweetness of Coke (did you know that shit can melt pennies?!?). I guess I could accidentally spill the drink all over the bartop to discolor the muted neon pound notes, balled-up bar napkins, and abandoned receipts. Except that I fear my cousin is enough of [...]
