Jeremy from Fingertips joins us each month as he scours the betterPropaganda archives, highlighting gems buried a few years back in our database. This month we bring you "Firecracker" from the Hot IQs . Without frills or warmup, a stark, meaty guitar lashes out of one of music's most compelling progressions: a major chord alternating with the minor chord one-half step down. Laurie Anderson famously wrote a long, strange, avant-garde pop song ("O Superman") that featured only this progression and nothing else; the contemporary composer John Adams has displayed his own recurring [...]

(Photo by Kenton Larson !) Hot IQs closed the book on their career to a packed house at the Bluebird Theater this weekend with one of the best shows I've seen them play. This is one band that will be greatly missed in the Denver Scene. Tim has a great review of the show up at Something Like Sound , which includes a few more of Kenton's photos. If you still can't get enough after listening to their farewell show, a solo Eli Mishkin set is still [...]

Were you ever a fan of MTV's The State ? What a great show; it was packed with an outstanding cast fairly early in their collective careers, and members went on to such notable shows as Reno 911 (practically half the cast) and Stella (the entire trio). There was a particular sketch - the pants sketch - that reminds me of the first quarter of the "Houndstooth" video by Hot IQs ( MySpace ). In the sketch, Michael Ian Black keeps getting turned down [...]
It has been a while since we've heard from the Hot IQs , but our favorite drummer-crush, Elaine Acosta, and her pals Eli and Bryan return with a new song and video called Houndstooth , from a new two-song 7" released through Rocco Records . The new video was directed by Tyler Ford . Previous: Hot IQs - Firecracker [...]

(Photo by Sam Scholes from SLC.) Here's a nice solo acoustic set from Hot IQs frontman Eli Mishkin. On this particular occasion, he opened for John Common's "Why Birds Fly" CD release party. I found a review for the South Park Music Festival that I wrote back in '06 before I had the music Blog, and I figured to prepare for my posting more about the Monolith Music Festival, I'd post it. I don't know if you knew this, but the Monolith Music Festival is run by one of the guys who ran the South Park Music Festival , so without the SPMF , Monolith wouldn't be around (though it seems as though another new Festival, the Fresh Track Music Fest , also [...]

For those of you that mourn (and you should) the loss of The Natural History due to their untimely break up, the best analog poised to fill that void that I have seen since can be best filled at the moment by the Hot IQs. They are from Denver, CO, and like the much missed The Natural History, they are an XTCesque sounding three piece. They left a great first impression. This song was recorded at The Delancey on October 16th. Download: Hot IQs - Retromuff (Live)
CMJ is upon us (well, it starts tomorrow, but same difference) and as I've been going through the band list looking for new bands the past week or two, I've come up with a few who I think have a lot of potential. Now, besides the obvious bands of Cut Off Your Hands and The Black Ghosts from HSB's IAMSOUND Records (ha), below are some of the bands that I enjoyed and will keeping an eye/ear on. I don't feel like writing a blurb for each so just listen and see what you like. This is [...]

Attending a music festival could be my favorite way to spend a weekend. But you always end up seeing fewer shows than you thought, especially when there are five geographically disparate stages. Next time I go to a festival, I am going to hire me a scheduling assistant to do nothing but look at the clock and tell me when to move it along, please, to the next show. And then physically force me to do it (" Get up, Heather. Walk now ."). So I didn't see all the bands I wanted to, but what I saw [...]

[Photo cred ] With Merry Swankster's Denver contingent still reeling from last night's terrific Okkervil River show, we quickly find ourselves just hours away from Colorado's most anticipated summer event. Today is Red Rocks' big moment in the bright indie rock sun. I understand the layout of the five stages will encompass unique and efficient methods of the Red Rocks arena. From a stage erected at the peak of the amphitheater's top concession area, to a few indoors at the visitor center located in the bowels of the prehistoric rock, and of course [...]

photo cred: Sterling Andrews The band with the hottest drummer in the game is back with a new 5-song EP. Hot IQs new EP is called Dangling Modifier and was released this past January on Yawact!ion Records. Their second full-length will follow this Spring. They have been accepted to SXSW 2007 and will also be playing a couple parties while there, but no official announcement has been made yet. This Denver trio makes [...]
Denver, CO Hot IQs just finished up a hot little tour, playing with acts like Cloud Cult and Annuals along the way. Their latest release is an EP entitled Dangling Modifier , but this song is from their full-length, which is available through Morning After Records and spinART . "Buyer's Remorse [...]
So WOXY.com has led me to yet another discovery - Denver's Hot IQs. I just heard the band's song "Duck and Cover" minutes ago, and I think I've already found another favorite new band. "Duck and Cover" can be heard at the band's MySpace page You should also check out the song "Retromuff" The band's new Dangling Modifier EP can be purchased here. In addition to those two songs, the EP also

I wasn't familiar with Denver, Colorado's The Hot IQs until this summer when I took in their set at the Midwest Music Summit. They played a great set of catchy, dance pop that I probably would have even thought more of if Silversun Pickups hadnt followed them and melted my face off. Even so, this trio is really hitting on all levels on their new EP, "Dangling Modifier", which is available now here. I got to listen to the EP this week and you can really feel them stepping it up. [...]
I woke up early yesterday morning and had no cigarettes. On my way out to the car I saw what must have been a 13 year old girl with bright red hair leaving the house of a 40-something guy that lives around the corner. She was completely messed up on cocaine or something similar and wiping her running nose. Her awkward shaking "hello" as we passed was disturbing. Sometimes the
The Hot IQs are a band I didn't know much about until I saw this video and heard this song. Now, I am pretty excited to see them play Midwest Music Summit. This Denver trio makes a brand of pop that has cleverly been dubbed Wit-Pop. Their new video for their single Firecracker is pure fun. Cross-dressing librarians and hot asian girls. (You know I like that!) The Hot IQs are on SpinART
