Borrowed Beams of Light (Adam Brock and Nathan Walsh), out of Virginia, are fresh on the scene with a new EP/LP, Hot Spring , set to be released August 14 via Funny / Not Funny Records . Their jubilant pop gets a kick in the arse on lead singles, "Wing Stroke" ( stream ) and "Blood Choir" (listen above). Visit them on the web and Facebook . [Sidenote: all the creative new embeds circling the interwebs are making me dizzy.]

For the previous three Christmas seasons, I have celebrated with this off-the-wall song by Sweden's Envelopes. I am late with it, but why stop a tradition? The droopy little pink tree above was snapped at Big Lots. I hope everyone is enjoying the day doing whatever you like to do. We are celebrating by roasting vegetables everyone hates! Next week: My favorite songs and albums of 2009, and Uncle T's Top 10 Albums. Envelopes - Pink Christmas from It's Not Like Christmas (2006) [...]
Song: Diseases (Instrumental) Artist: Thrush and the Cunts Album: Dogs In Space (OMST) Comments: Is Morbid Isolation actually a regeneration of this Aussie outfit? This isn't actually an Instrumental but it does remind me of some of the output that Jimmy Morbid has put out this year. This track is from a movie I watched and oddly has a connection to two ex-girlfriends. The first connection was that I actually saw this movie and it was because Michael Hutchence just was in it. The second was that the other ex [...]

Photography by Julie Rey Say whaaaat ? We already got enough songs for Volume Two, or as the French Canadian says, "Volume Deux, eh"? Fuck yeah! Or as the French Canadian would also say, " Québec Devienne Souverain !" Seems like just the other day we squeaked out our first twenty songs in our first volume of our much hailed and heralded Mixtape By Numbers , but our amazing members down in the society weren't content to stop at 20 [...]

Have we mentioned that herohill and i (heart) music are involved with some showcases at this year's Halifax Pop Explosion ? Did you know that one of these showcases is being headlined by an Inbreds Halifax reunion show ? What, there's an ad for it on the right hand side of this page? Well, me fault, but still, we're pretty excited about this whole shebang and so we'll likely just keep on mentioning it. Hope you don't mind. But of course we'll also be mentioning the other excellent acts that are coming for the [...]
The Hot Springs Genre: Thrash / Pop / Psychedelic From: Montreal, Canada Last October the Devil featured a review of the debut album from one of Canada's most exciting new bands, The Hot Springs ( Heat Is Rising ). Well they've just released a new single, the Catatonia on steroids 'Fog and the Horn', the best track off [...]

On yesterday's radio show on Little Radio, the band that was featured in the 'INTRODUCING..." segment is a band called HOT SPRINGS from Montreal, Canada. Fronted by the unforgettable voice of Giselle Webber, the 4-piece has roots deep in punk rock, but Webber has also spent time singing over old jazz records to create a sound that is definitely her own. Part MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND, part MACY GREY on acid, Giselle's voice could easily pull off a great cover of ' Love Removal Machine ' [...]
As a small warning both friends {one a brother} that I've shared this band with have pretty much hated them from the word go. And their beef is with lead singer Giselle's voice. It's a bit, well, tremulous at times. I guess you could almost say she has a penchant for warble. While I hear a sensitivity, and almost innocence in this style they heard things like babies crying and lack of sleep. Or so I'm told. This album was actually one of the very first I was ever officially given in the [...]

I started this day working for some good friends , helping set up the outdoor party for the Canadian Blast . I mounted a left arrow on a fence and hung flags. Pretty easy work to do in the sun. It was a solid lineup that day at the Brush Square. The United Steel Workers of Montreal opened (and if you check the flyer , it looks like two bands had the opening slot, The United Steel Workers and Of Montreal ). Next up was [...]
Here is my fantasy SXSW schedule for this Thursday, March 13, which didn't get quite so crowded as Wednesday's schedule. I would probably try to spend the afternoon at the Clermont Team 's party. They have turned me on to a lot of good music in the past year. I saw the Helio Sequence recently, and that was a good show; and I'd love to see Elf Power and hear songs from their new album which will be released this year. I have two of the Scottish bands , the Dykeenies [...]

New favorite Hot Springs, a loud and promising Montreal band fronted by indie rocker, part-time hip hop artist and model, Giselle have released a video and I wanted to share it with you. Headrush [Download Headrush] Hot Springs are playing Canadian dates for the next month or so but are slated to play SxSW in Austin this March. They have wisely left the post-festival dates open for opportunities throughout the states and [...]

Lou Reed maligned the number 37 in “Femme Fatale,” but some interesting 37 songs popped up once I started looking. While the field for 38 is similarly scant, once again, some odd nuggets have appeared in my pan. (Somebody helpfully suggested .38 Special to me, and in all honesty, I can still get into “Hold on Loosely” much more than is wise to admit here, but this is about songs, people, otherwise Matchbox 20 and Level 42, etc., would be eligible to win something based on their numerical names alone, and that I could not abide.) [...]

ON FURTHER REVIEW: I revisit some of the best records I wrote about this year.... All in the spirit of discovery - During a weekend fall foliage session and a visit to friends in Vermont, I packed my bag and plotted a trip north. I was armed with six still-sealed, completely new artist albums which I happily used my teeth to open while I made my way north. This is how I discovered a new favorite band from old Montreal. Hot Springs is a four piece band with some wicked [...]
I have been meaning to review this album, but I didn't get to sit down and devoted both my ears to it until this past Thanksgiving weekend. The Hot Springs is a new female-fronted, foursome hailing from Montreal, Canada. Their "Bio" opening sentence says something about they don't want to be your...

I was most happy on a recent road trip (armed with a half-dozen sealed CDs) when I discovered a new favorite from Montreal. Hot Springs is a four piece band with some hot hooks and a great singer in Giselle Webber . The band just released their Volcano album in '07 and are making some seriously fun waves - check out these tracks and put this band on your radar! The Volcano album is definitely worth owning. Hot Springs. You heard it here first! GEO-THERMAL MADNESS: [...]

The Hot Springs Genre: Thrash / Pop / Psychedelic From: Montreal, Canada According to their myspace site hot new Canadian band Hot Springs don't want to be your facebook friend. They don't care about what haircut you have. They don't care about your blog (talk about biting the hand that feeds you!). They simply want to freak you out with their debut [...]
