There was a discussion over at Silence Is a Rhythm (scroll down about half a page) about the recent Human League reissues and how EMI have done an okay job with them. One thing I hated, though, is that they were so close to being perfect by only one or two tracks. The Hysteria remaster is more than serviceable, including all the remixes of the era, but my main beef was that by including just two missing tracks from the U.S. Fascination EP , EMI would have sewn [...]

As I mentioned mere hours ago, the Sheffield, UK synth-pop outfit THE HUMAN LEAGUE will be touring this August with fellow Sheffielders ABC (and Hollywooder BELINDA CARLISLE ). Unlike ABC, the Human League do not have a new album to draw from, so I guess we'll have to go back to the classics.... [ MP3 ] "Don't You Want Me" [1981] [...]

According to Wikipedia, the original Human League was an "avant-garde all male synthesizer-based group from Sheffield". Johnny Rotten called them "trendy hippies" when their debut single "Being Boiled" appeared in 1978. In 1980, the original synthesizer players Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left the group to form Heaven 17 , and instead of playing trendy all male hippie avant-garde, The Human League suddenly made commercially successful co-ed electro pop with a fashion sense. They did not abandon the synthesizers, though, and they were still a band from Sheffield. Here is the original line-up [...]
The Human League - Circus of Death (Fast Product Version) Real horrorshow stuff here from the very early Human League, circa 1978. This was the B-side of their first Single "Being Boiled" on Fast Records, a Sheffield-based label who released a 1979 compilation album inventively called 'Fast Product' which featured these two League tracks The Mekons, Scars, 2.3 and a couple of blistering early tracks from Gang Of Four (which I would post up if I could find the bleedin' cassette which I've had for about 20 years but mislaid. The cover is [...]
Here are a few more perfect pop records which brings the number of featured songs up up to 100 (by my rough count). Stevie Wonder - You Are The Sunshine Of My Life.mp3 This song has been covered a zillion times and by some of the finest singers ever to commit their voices to record (Sinatra, Fitzgerald). And every one of these covers has failed to translate the sweet vitality of the original.
Today England celebrates it's national holiday, the traditional feast day of its patron saint George. You wouldn't know it, for most this is simply a non-event. There's no parade like Chinese New Year, no mass revelling like St Patricks, no national fervour like 4th July. The simple fact is, that most folk see being English [...]

Loving the new song & video from Neon Neon called 'I Lust U' featuring guest vocals by Cate Le Bon. It's top notch electro-pop and has those great back and forth male/female vocals I love. Kinda like Postal Service did with 'Nothing Better' or Human League with their Classic 'Don't You Want Me' . Damn good stuff! The whole album is pretty amazing (I Highly Recommend that you go buy Stainless Style right this second!) Gruff Rhys is a [...]

Question: You're the lead singer and lyricist of an up and coming underground synth-based band. You've just lost your songwriter and main keyboardist to an ego clash. You're left with no one but the man who runs the slide projector during your live shows. What do you do? If you answered "immediately go clubbing and hire two teenaged girls you see dancing as your new band members," collect your smash platinum album and worldwide number one hit. But perhaps we should start at the beginning… The Human League began life as [...]

I've decided it might be fun to post a new music mix every Sunday. Frankly, it's probably more fun for me creating them than it is for anyone listening to them, but it's my blog and I can be as self-indulgent as I like. Although, this does put pressure on me to actually remember to do this every Sunday - I will probably remember to do this rather than real homework, mind. This first mix is a purely fun one (no music snobbery in this one). It's upbeat and largely electronic. While I have a serious side that [...]
Sometimes I think when it comes to music matters and 2008, I'll only give it a glance when it concerns music dating from 1981. Sad but true. Kissy Sell Out vs The Human League - 'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of' mp3 Hat tip to music blog, Paul's Ramblings .
Mother Superior rations out two more Cut Copy rarities to fix all you street walkin' cheetahs proper whilst awaiting the 'cutters next psyched-out star folk voyage. And not unlike a 1984 romantic adventure featuring the Turner/Douglas combo, the Cribs: CSS redux, Japan, and Human League offerings below are 1000% exotic gems and crocodile skin boots. The Moths Genre: Indie/ Electronica / Punk From: London, United Kingdom The Moths (not to be confused with former houseband of the infamous Depford Crypt, London's greatest psychedelic Club of the 80s, of the same name. For more on the other Moths click here ) are the intoxicating handiwork of west-London song writing [...]
Another 80s post! (Sorry, those of you born in the 70s and 60s and 50s - I love your music too!) I'm more or less six months older than MTV (back when it actually played videos) so I think to fully appreciate this music you've got to see the videos. (For some it will be the first time, and for others it will be a blast of nostalgia/horror.) I love the music from the decade I was born - I don't think I've ever gotten over the New Romantic/New Wave era. I think it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say [...]
I've said it a few times before...don't get me started gushing about The Human League's Dare , quite possibly my favorite album of the '80s. No matter how many times a track from the 1981 masterpiece pops up in my iTunes, I can never bring myself to hit the "skip" button. Forced to nail down a favorite track (no, not that one...), I'd probably pick the widescreen beauty of the ABBA-licious "Open Your Heart" . From its en media res [...]

Dropping back into the early new wave scene, we go to a June 1980 show featuring the original lineup of the Human League . The founding members were Philip Oakey, Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh, and Philip Adrian Wright (who ran films and slide shows onstage, but was still credited as a full band member). Oakey remains today as the only original member of the still functioning Human League. Ware and Marsh left the group in late 1980 and went on to form Heaven 17 . I'm no aficionado of science fiction or video games, but [...]
