Every day should be Record Store Day ... I mean, why not? Ken Cheppaikode , who runs Portland's Green Noise Records , said it was probably the best day of business he's had since taking over the place in 2005. He was understandably in a chipper mood that day. So was I. Beautiful weather brought Portlanders out in droves. And I was able to make it to a couple of stops on on my RSD09 tour. I snagged a handful of free CDs from Cheppaikode's label Dirtnap Records, as well as the latest, and probably final, [...]

Flikr founder Caterina Fake has a new venture: Hunch . It's in private beta now, and we're giving it a test spin to see what's the what. It's got lots of data and an easy UI. But you're probably wondering what is Hunch. Via her blog post : "Hunch is a decision-making site, customized for you. Which means Hunch gets to know you, then asks you 10 questions about a topic (usually fewer!), and provides a result - a Hunch, if you will. It gives you results it wouldn't give other people." [...]

Loving The Dead What's this I hear?!? The band of my dreams is breaking up?!? Is there no greater injustice in this world than finding out a band only to discover that they have just broken up? Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Portland, Oregon's The Hunches...Too fast, too fine, perhaps too fun for this world...What hooked me was their 2009 long player Exit Dreams from Garage Rock Record Kings In The Red. What can I say - the band comes off as a reckless blend of Kim [...]

The Hunches have a new album called Exit Dreams . Who are The Hunches? They are vocalist Hart Gledhill, bassist Sarah Epstein, guitarist Chris Gunnare, drummer Ben Spencer (of the The Real Pills ). They play rawk and roll music. They are from Portland, Oregon. Dig it. Downloadable: "Ate My Teeth" (box.net mp3) Note: Exit Dreams is not presently available in digital form from eMusic or Amazon (but probably will be soon). Right now, you can get it through mail order . In The Red is [...]

La grosse surprise de ce début d'année nous vient de Portland. Pas encore suite à la découverte d'une espèce de castor endémique mais... The Hunches s'apprêtent à sortir leur troisième LP chez In The Red .

Jethro Cave became such a big deal on the runways in Milan this past week that my new boss hero, Nicola Formichetti, threw together a hair-raising photo shoot with Hedi Slimane exclusively for their websites. Look at the whole thing here ! While you're at it, who better to soundtrack your viewing of this new fucked up rock n' roll kid-of-the-day than with my favorite Portland punk band, The Hunches ? If you answered anyone else you're wrong and are officially penalized. One thing I hope to bring to my new occupation in the [...]

The Hunches Exit Dreams (01.2009, In the Red) Verdict = First great surprise of 2009 I have a knack for catching great bands on their deathbed. Apparently, The Hunches have been around for awhile despite their sparse back catalog; however, Exit Dreams is indeed the bands final effort. I'd never heard of them so that didn't mean anything to me until I gave Exit Dreams a good few spins. Sure every band must die, but it is pretty bittersweet when you've just been introduced; just getting those [...]

*Bon Iver's Blood Bank EP is beautiful. *Welcome back The Hunches. I haven't heard their new album, but their old stuff is great. * "Seahorse" on vinyl=heaven. *Thom's remixes have been floating around the web for the past year and a half. *I'm interested in hearing the new North Mississippi Allstars album. They are playing this Thursday @ The Troubadour (Buy Tix) . They put on one hell of a live show. Download/Purchase - Insound or Amazon: Andrew Bird: Noble Beast [...]
The Hunches - Ate My Teeth Last ever record from this Portland garage band and it's this ridiculous sort of incessant garage fury but also super beautiful and ballady in parts. Quieter experimentation drifts across those mutated Stooges songs, full of scraping textures and tectonic melodies underneath. Honestly, on "Pinwheel Spins" it sounds like they actually went down underground to the sewers or some cave to make (the space is that concrete and echoey). Not that it sounds subterranean or anything, it's just this experimentalism edges their rock way past just punk normalism or lo-fi aestheticism. [...]

Portland's lost sons, The Hunches give their farewell in the form of Exit Dreams and though the demise is reportedly final, the band hasn't lost a step. The album is torn between its grunge roots, noise exterior and pop soul; filling in the spaces that fall between the three and acting as a reminder that each are so dependent upon each other that it's useless to try to parse them out. The band isn't afraid to fully delve themselves into either side of their personality though, kicking out straightforward pop numbers immediately followed by a shot of atonal [...]
The Hunches - Ate My Teeth They are from Portland, Oregon. They are garage rock. They are on their third album. They are classically aggressive. They are perfect for ATP. They are inspired by Half Japanese, Stooges, Cramps, etc. They are demented (probably). They are the Pixies on your personal life enhancing drug of choice. They are better than the last sentence. They are 60s punk. They are breaking up. The Hunches - Street Sweeper [...]
