Yesterday, Portland's MusicFestNW wrapped up five days of concerts at over a dozen venues throughout the city. Among the acts who performed were Passion Pit, Beirut, Girl Talk, Dinosaur Jr., Flying Lotus, Swans, Fucked Up, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Wild Nothing, Purity Ring, and DIIV. Every time you think youve got Warp Records pegged they throw you a wobbly like The Hundred in the Hands . Far removed from the likes of Autechre, Aphex, and other Warp mainstays, THITH discard the labels usual subterranean ethos and deliver a shadowy cocktail thats often more pop than electro. Aside from the fact that this seems to be a sure money maker, the reasons for signing the NYC duo are somewhat esoteric. Tapping into the zeitgeists of today and 2010 , Santa Rosa's gloomy, shoegazing chillwave duo, Teenage Sweater , open their first EP, Kewl , with "Coconut Water" a song described in the band's press release as a "waves-crashing-on-the-beach-w hile-you-snuggle-your-prom-dat e" tune. They left out the "in-an-ethereal-opium-haze-wea ring-thick-eyeliner-and-crying -at-how-fucking-beautiful-ever ything-is" from that description. But, hey, that's cool. Teenage Sweater sound like a blurrier, more downtrodden Small Black or perhaps Neon Indian, minus the neon. The group leans on distinctly slower beats and moodier synth tones than the aforementioned.
