Fans of Best Coast should take note of Books of Love . The L.A. duo - comprised of Katy Goodman (Vivian Girls, La Sera) and Greta Morgan (The Hush Sound) - turns up the doo-wop on Bethany Cosentino's summery lo-fi surf rock. Their debut track, "Space Time," spins a tale of unrequited, interstellar love. It comes with a cute homemade video, which you can watch above. STREAM: Books of Love - "Space Time"

11.02.2011 is a palindrome day and there was no better way to celebrate this rare palindrome holiday than with a performance from a band clever enough to write a song about palindromes. Kansas City lucked out on Palindrome Day with a Beaumont Club concert featuring plenty of math and trivia-filled songs from They Might Be Giants . Chicago's Gold Motel opened the evening with summery tunes that helped the audience forget the threat of forecasted snow. Gold Motel ran into some technical troubles early in the set with an uncooperative keyboard; and for [...]

Debate Team makes the kind of hook-filled rock that mobilizes power-pop armies, and they'd probably do more of it if it weren't for their day jobs. The L.A.-based quintet counts among it members guitarist Drew Brown of OneRepublic , bassist Bob Morris of the Hush Sound and drummer Dan Konopka of OK Go , who, with singer Ryan McNeill and keyboardist Adam James, fashion edgy rockers that are a little bit Weezer (or Rentals, even) and a little bit Fountains of Wayne. They released an EP's worth of head-bobbing material, titled "Wins Again," via iTunes [...]

I have two social circles. A lot of people do - They divide their home life or work life from their social life and I'm no exception. Recently, I was sitting with Matt Roney, that RFC contributor I seem to be damn near inseperable from these days given how many of my tales involve him, and I mentioned that, in my "home life", I'm "The Barney". To understand this, of course, you have to mildly familiar with CBS's hilarious sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, which features the following archetypes: Lily and Marshall: The [...]

Lately at RFC, we’ve been missing and reminiscing about The Hush Sound . The local band has been on hiatus for more than two years, calling a time-out back in 2008 directly after the release of its third album Goodnight Blues . It was bummersville considering their final album showed an insight and emotional depth previously absent in their brand of catchy, buoyant pop. Like a tease, The Hush Sound got fans all excited, then left them high and dry, wanting more. But the band is offering some temporary satisfaction - it [...]

Although I spent a good portion of my yesterday finalizing today's "Cheers To The Friend Zone" mix, that didn't stop me from tossing together a new play list today, one of significantly happier songs that were more tailored to my mood. While making this mix (Tentatively titled "It's Actually Not Tough To Have A Crush", as throwback to the closing notes Miss Holmes' mix .), I tossed on a track I hadn't listened to in some time: "Love You Much Bettter" by The Hush Sound . And it was then that I [...]

Meg & Dia - Indiana "So inclined to do what 's right" If any song makes me think of high school, this has to be one of them. I do have a soft spot for girl groups, so that may have been what attracted them to me at first, but this song was ringtone for a long time as well. They are talented girls, but now they have formed the "The Meg & Dia Band". I guess they unfortunately were dropped from their label this year, but have released an album I believe, so [...]

Chicago-birthed Gold Motel is the new project from Greta Morgan (Salpeter) of the Hush Sound , which churned out three albums of keyboard-driven pop-rock on the Fueled by Ramen imprint from 2005 to ’08. With the Hush Sound on hiatus, Morgan high-tailed it to L.A. to work on a solo project, which has blossomed into a quintet as she is releasing the "Gold Motel" EP (a full-length is due in June). Classic pop influences here, undeniably catchy, even if the songs rarely color outside the lines. ||| Download: "Perfect in [...]
Gold Motel - Perfect In My Mind ** once lead singer of the hush sound, pushed out by the dude (or whatever ‘creative direction’ the record execs wanted), now solo. Another beautiful voice

MuteMath at The Tabernacle in ATL on Friday followed by the Atlanta Falcons football game at the Georgia Dome today...it's like a welcome mat to Georgia. Busy weekend but SO much fun :) I went to the MuteMath show on Friday night after listening to the CD all week thinking, "Hey, this'll be good" but I was completely blown away; the drummer Darren King is my new hero...which leads me to this week's "AIAWW." Instead of the standard fare of new and random music, I've decided to do a collection of songs that have made me a) almost dislodge my [...]
