Catherine Losing For The Records pointed out a curious concert listing for UK indie-dance act Friendly Fires at the website for Beggars Canada - it puts the St Alban's trio in town on March 31, but only narrows the venue down to two possibilities - Mod Club or Lee's Palace. So all I can accurately say is that they'll be in Toronto at an approximately 500-capacity venue on that date. And wherever they are, odds of a dance party breaking out are pretty much one to one. Personally, [...]

What is there to do on a Sunday? I get home from work (after putting in almost two hours of overtime) and everyone's gone to Sunset Junction to hear shitty bands and eat/drink price-gouged food/drinks. It's dead quiet in the apartment, there's no furniture or anything here since the old roommates moved out, and I'm contemplating laying on the floor and closing my eyes for a while. Unfortunately, the weird bug bites on my ankles make it so I'm not interested in putting my face anywhere near the carpets, at least not until we're certain there isn't anything [...]
I know it's a bit late, but check out Swan Fungus' 106 Sunday Mixtape. It should get me back into the swing of things. Tracks: 1. Mogwai - Batcat - (buy this album) 2. Alice Cooper - [...]

Alaska In Winter Okkkkaaayyy. I really have no time right now, but I feel bad for not posting this past week. So here are a couple tracks, enjoy: MP3: Alaska In Winter Close Your Eyes - We Are Blind (feat. I was sitting around the house thinking about John Millard and Happy Day. I've been making a lot of mix CDs for work lately, and thinking about relationships between songs and music and trying to reconcile them. But what do you with Happy Day? It kinda doesn't work. The closest thing I could think of to put it next to, to put it in the same room with, is the Hylozoists , if only for the sake of vibes--literal vibes, that is. But the vibes aren't half the story. There's Millard himself, with his lofty baritone that borders on [...]

This all instrumental band was the creation of one great producer Paul Aucoin. The off and on again group created a new album, which is amazing. I might be partial because I am a percussionist, but I think the use of the Vibes as part of the melody is wonderful. This group has a really full sound, the drums aren't overpowering, and they play really well together. This is one of the best "indie" ensembles I have ever heard! These guys tour a lot, so I would check them out for sure! I can just imagine a polyphonic spree type [...]
SPIN's cover story for April traces the romantic story of when Johnny met Isaac. After reading Marr's words, all we can say is ... Brock's got balls.SPIN: So Isaac Brock just called you out of the blue? MARR: Someone from...

And that's a wrap. I was actually back at the hotel a good two hours earlier than I'd originally planned, on account of a) being bloody tired and b) being pretty sure there was no way I was getting into any more shows. And that suited me fine. My day - my festival - peaked around 4:00 yesterday afternoon when the audience leapt onstage at Club DeVille with The Rosebuds and danced through the end of their set. Witnessing a moment like that of pure musical joy at a party that I'd helped put [...]

Not sure what the contributing factors were, but it seemed like everybody was a little frustrated yesterday down at SouthBy; people showing up to the right day party at the wrong time, jumbling their schedules, taking wrong turns in what's...
The Theater Fire checked out Hylozoists and Lambchop (with strings). "Howdy Craig, Thursday we got a late start and we played at Waterloo Ice House at 4PM so I didn't catch any day shows. After we got the equipment squared away we hooked it on over to the Habana Calle 6 Annex to catch Lampchop . We got there an hour before their set thinking that their would already be a line and, to our surprise, we waltzed right into a whopping crowd of about 10 people (counting ourselves). I [...]

Lymbyc Systym - Birds (zShare) Lymbyc Systym - Truth Skull Lymbyc Systym 's debut full-length, Love Your Abuser, is out now on Mush Records . Despite the vaguely sadomasochistic implications of the title, these instrumentals are richly textured, tempo shifting pop. Particularly on "Birds," we find swelling percussion sections breathing life into simple keyboard melodies, creating songs that bloom and recede with seamless precision. If you like what you hear, Montreal's Hylozoists are making similarly serene instrumentals. Hylozoists - Strait is [...]
Hylozoists-"Straight is the Gate" After spending many months with this album, I can safely say it is one of my favorites of the year, and perhaps king of the (surprisingly crowded!) vibraphone-sounding-post-rock crowd, a genre (of sorts) that I typically roll my eyes at. Yes, this does mean it sounds like a lot of other similar "orchestral/cinematic" bands out there (Aloha, Do Make Say Think,

Akron/Family play at the First Baptist Church on Friday This Sunday at Zaphod's, there's yet another indiescene veteran in town(in addition to Yo La Tengo last week), Giant Sand . The 20+ year-old Tucson indie rock band features Howe Gelb , who has an unlikely number of Ottawa connections: his latest solo album, 'Sno Angel Like You , was inspired by a winter-time trip to Ottawa and a Bluesfest set at a church with local singer-songwriter Jim Bryson and gospel choirs. Not only was the album inspired by [...]
* * * * * The Hylozoists - Details At Five * * * * * While this is equal part TNT era Tortoise and Dots and Loops era Stereolab, I think a more satisfying reference point might be the Softies song 'Me and the Bees'. Think of it as the instrumental realization of the lyric, "Now it's just me and the bees, in a cyclone of falling leaves": all of vibraphones and glockenspeils, [...]

This vibraphone belongs to John Vanderslice Hylozoists don't score films, but they should. Their debut, La Fin Du Monde , is a fluttering jumble of Jon Brion I Heart Huckabees flourishes and rhythmic Morricone-isms, horn squelches and woozy vibraphones. The mostly instrumental album is kind of a weird fit for the otherwise pop-oriented Boompa Records (you shold check out the Salteens), but if we can't hear this at the movies, scenic drives down Pacific Coast Highway will have to suffice. Hylozoists - "The [...]
