Sometimes you have to leave L.A. for greener pastures. Or, of course, for a girl and maybe some cheaper rent. Which is how Colin Ritchie — who until a year ago played for SoCal quintet the Idyllists — has found himself stationed in Iowa City, Iowa, home of the University of Iowa, 20-below-zero temperatures in the dead of winter and, as it turns out, a pretty robust little music scene. Ritchie's new project is a five-piece with A.M. Havlin, Amanda Crosby, Rachel Sauter and Matthew Wagner called Emperors Club , who are trading in nimble, exuberant indie [...]

Wednesday is "Buddy Holly Day" in Los Angeles, and on the anniversary of the four-eyed phenom's 75th birthday he will get a (long-overdue) star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with an invitation-only concert that night at the Music Box featuring an A-list lineup of performers including Paul Anka, Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Michelle Branch, Raul Malo, Stevie Nicks, Graham Nash and Boz Scaggs. So the shamelessly retro rock of the Hopelessly Devoted has arrived just in time — or 50-some years late, depending on your point of view. The L.A. band is a side project of local [...]

The Idyllists This seven piece outfit sounds like they're from 1960's Britain; their percussion is loose and peppy, the guitars jangly and the lyrics uncomplicated. They are, however, actually from modern day LA - well, lead singer Ian Webber is a Brit but a US based one- and they've just released their second album The Idyllists and a new free EP Les Singles . If you like a your music sun drenched and surfy with a hint of rockabilly then do yourself a favor and check these [...]

You can download Les Singles for free by signing up for The Idyllists mailing list here. I am starting to become a huge fan of their retro pop sound. I can't seem to help but bop my head back and forth. So check 'em out.

The Capshuns , "Time to Say" (self-released) — The L.A. quartet's agile rock sounds as if it rode in on the slipstream of the British Invasion, the soundtrack to top-down, scarves-flying car chases involving ne'r-do-wells driving vintage Astin Martins. Blaring guitars and chugging rhythms carry the day, and although singer Patrick Thomas — at his best channeling the pained earnestness of Michael Penn — forces the issue too often, he adeptly plays agitated pop-punk on tracks like "Famous Layers" and "Her Lovers Thunder." On "Tell Her I Said Hello," he reflects on "mystic chords of memory." Overall, [...]

This is a very-much-in-progress feature that will normally be posted on the weekends, but is showing up early because I'm out of town and needed something to fill this space for today. It's a combination of (a) follow-ups on prior posts, (b) links to cool stuff I've recently found on other music blogs, (c) quick write-ups on submissions that have been sent my way lately, and (d) whatever-the-hell else I feel like rambling about. - This week's installment is being written while listening to Paper Dolls , the new album from [...]

What did you say, Dearest Friends? It's almost February?? Gadzooks! How did that happen?? Oh well, I suppose it's not yet too late to extend you my heartfelt wishes for a faaabulous 2010, one full of everything that your wonderful hearts desire and that your beautiful souls need. The next month or so for me is going to consist of working and packing. Posts here will be kind of lacking till I get settled into the new home. No doubt, many of my nights will be the constant repeating of "Why do I have this?" Packing has that effect on me. Enough of that. On with the tuneage... Swedish trio, Brothers of End , released their debut album, The End , in October. Big Bird by [...]

[Everything digested? Here's how to burn off the calories this weekend ...] Tonight: Julian Casablancas , doing his different-strokes solo project [review 1 and 2 ], winds up his residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, with local quintet Haim opening. Danielle Haim plays in Casablancas' band too. ... Vancouver garage rockers Japandroids visit the Echo, with Surfer Blood opening. ... There will be plenty of harmonies at the El Rey Theatre, where Rooney , [...]

There's way too many tracks accumulating in the inbox for me to properly scrutinize all of them, but I've at least narrowed it down quite a bit. I'm feeling slightly democratic today, so I'm going to let the people choose. Comin' Undone by Kuba Oms from How Much Time Days by Sambassadeur from European Great Love Story by The Idyllists [...]

Whoa there... What have we here? 7 dapper young men (6 parts American, 1 part British) 6 nice jackets 5 pairs of Chuck Taylors 4 pairs of Jarvis Cocker glasses 1 swanky hat Dammit, I'm already sold but you just keep selling! I've latched onto The Idyllists as one of my favourites for 2009, and I swear it's not just for aesthetic reasons. It's for their wonderfully ear-pleasing blend of new and old-timey britpop, even though they're based in [...]

This is another of those bands that we are lucky to be contacted by. The Idyllists are from Los Angeles (seems like we host a lot of California bands these days...perhaps we are influenced by Californication?) although they sound much more british (in a good way). Their influences are definetly britpop with high resemblance to the Smiths. Beautiful happy tunes and melodies with pure pop elements and straightforward tunes that really stay with you. I'm suprised how these guys haven't made it big yet...but guess you never know when this will change (hopefully soon). Enjoy! [...]

From England comes The Idyllists , a six piece 60's inspired Indie band. The Idyllists have just released their album "The Long Hours Between Sunset & Morning"; I've picked a few songs that I really liked from this amazing album, hope you all like it. The Idyllists - I Think is going to rain The Idyllists - You are gonna break my heart someday [...]

I was a banana. And somewhere between this point on now, I grabbed a pretty annoying head cold. That's why its been a little quiet on the site. Quite a lot better now and I've managed to go through some e-mail and I'm wanting to tell you about a couple bands/songs. - Stereogum has a pretty cool remix of Max Tundra 's Which Song by Passion Pit . - The Idyllists are new on my radar and I think I Think It's Going To Rain is [...]

[If I had time to trawl all the Hollywouldya sites, I'd clue you in on all the Grammy parties you won't see me at. As it is, read about some of them here . Meanwhile, it'll be a busy weekend even without the award-dispensing, or the Garth Brooks birthday party ...] Tonight: What a night to start the weekend — especially on the Eastside. Lady Sovereign has a new album on the way (Spin has a blurb and a stream of the single "So Human" here , [...]

Our monthly look at the interesting songs that I was too lazy to write about! I've just been watching more episodes from the second season of Everwood, so I'm writing this with the feeling of general malaise that always strikes after that. Fun! MP3 Matthew Friedberger - The Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company Resignation Letter I don't really get the Fiery Furnaces. I explored them after the high Pitchfork scores (yeah, I'm one of those people) but they never really clicked for me. A few [...]
