Is it trite to get all summer song-y when the heat comes to town? And woodland-y on top of that? Maybe, and who cares. Here's some music for romping around under canopies of leaves, sunlight flickering between the sturdy trees, a little stain on the brain. How about a double shot? This essay has nothing to do with Steve Perry, '80s sleeve-logo shirts or Journey, but what the hell I say ... [ Check out Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's set at SXSW 2004 above!!! ] OK, so it's obvious: I'm all out of sorts today, as I have several grad-school papers due and fatherly duties I just can't shirk. I was GOING to re-print a review I wrote of Woelv 's Tout Seul Dans La Foret En Plein Jour, Avez-Vour Peur? and append pictures [...]

Today I have prepared a nice sampler from the The Jagjaguwar / Secretly Canadian / Dead Oceans family of labels. Some are new, some are old, all are worth a listen. "Walk Through A Cloud" (scjag mp3) by The Donkeys "Dreaming Of The Plum Trees" (scjag mp3) by White Hinterland "First Fantasy" (scjag mp3) by Citay "A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise" (scjag mp3) by Phosphorescent More [...]
If you weren't aware of the fact that the Hoosier state is indeed lame, here's proof. ZING!

Secretly Canadian's The Impossible Shapes are playing Lisa's Oak Street Lounge this Friday, July 11th. It's no secret that Secretly Canadian is one of our favorite labels here at Backseat Sandbar (up there with Asthmatic Kitty, K, Kill Rock Stars, and Labrador), so anytime one of their bands comes to town, we're always enthusiastic to promote it. Louisville's Ladybirds will also be playing which would have been a reason to go in its own regard (Anton Mink is out). Admission is only $5 bucks and the fun starts at 10pm. Upcoming Impossible Shapes Shows... [...]
The Impossible Shapes [ Official Site , Myspace ] released this video in June and I finally just saw a note that I wrote to myself: "Shawn, post this video." Good thing I wrote that note, eh? The Bloomington, IN act shares not only a hometown with arguably my favorite record label, but also with such talented musical acts as Murder by Death and, well, that's all I know. I looked and drew a blank on more Bloomington bands, so if you can think of more, leave some more in [...]

Tonight in DC the Black Cat has the show of the night with Fleet Foxes and The Duchess & The Duke. Up in Philly don't miss a great one at the M Room with The Impossible Shapes, New Motels, On mono, and Phil & The Osophors. If that isn't your cup of tea perhaps you'd enjoy the RZA as Bobby Digital playing the Troc with Stone Mecca. mp3: Fleet Foxes - Drops In The River mp3: The Impossible Shapes - Florida Silver Springs

I've been working on the release posts all month, but with the server switch and other things that we had going on, they never saw the light of day. I'm going to correct that, by presenting you an entire month's worth of releases at once. It pretty much goes without saying, that this is going to be the longest post in IA's history. We'll be back with the regularly scheduled weekly posts this week. Enjoy! Week of June 24 I cannot say enough about the amount of great music out [...]

Here's some quality, week old information you can use. These are the new music releases from Tuesday, June 17th. Of course the big release was the new Coldplay (over 700k sold in the first week). A lot of you probably picked up the new Wolf Parade too.... Records Released on 6/17/08: Records I've Heard: Noa Babayof : From a Window to a Wall (Language of Stone) – She's a folky, Israeli singer-songwriter inspired by Joni Mitchell and Vashti Bunyan. Bloomington's veteran purveyors of psychedelic and folk rock, The Impossible Shapes , have lovingly (see picture above) released their seventh proper full length this week through the ever-relevant Secretly Canadian label. The self-titled album (the actual title is an unpronounceable sigil representing a potent symbol of desire) just might be their finest record to date too, with the possible exception of 2006's 'Tum,' which continues to be a personal favorite. While past albums have their moments of brilliance, this one is more concise and consistent than its [...]
During a recent KEXP in-studio, Guy Garvey of Elbow touted fellow UK songwriter Adem's song "Love and Other Planets" as one of his recent favorites. Now, Adem is releasing Takes , a collection of covers of some of his favorites of the 90s. Check out his cover of PJ Harvey's "Oh My Lover." More solid songwriting can be found on new albums from Eef Barzelay (of Clem Snide), Silver Jews, Head Like a Kite, Wolf Parade, The Low Lows, The Notwist, and the list goes on (thanks to Largehearted Boy). If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, [...]

The Impossible Shapes have named their seventh album with a magical, unpronounceable symbol - but don't let that deter you.
In effort to raise awareness about upcoming releases as well as finding a place for the numerous submissions we get, this post continues our weekly purging of free and legal MP3's for your listening enjoyment. The number of tracks will fluctuate each week depending on the songs uncovered or sent. It's our hope that you'll find a new favorite or another release to keep your eyes on.
