My sister, who is getting married in October, decided she wants Bruce Springsteen's 'Jersey Girl' as the first dance at her wedding. She picked it out of an A4 sheet of paper that had about ten options and has since learned to love the song on her iPod. Hmmm. I dunno. If I got married it would not be in a church. There probably would not be a lot of people there. Indeed, it would be under a tree, so people would not fit. A tree that sheds blossoms or brightly coloured leaves. And the music played [...]

Mike Heron - The Smiling Man Returns Photo: Mike Heron with Robyn Hitchcock at Pestival 2009 Robyn Hitchcock is thrilled to announce that Mike Heron will be opening all the dates on his UK tour, starting in Newcastle on April 7, 2010. Mike was a founder member of the Incredible String Band , psych-folk legends from the 1960s and one of Robyn's teenage favourites. Stumbled upon the following amusing anecdote in renowned rock hack Nick Kent´s recent seventies memoir Apathy For The Devil . At the abode of his cokedealer of all places, Kent meets a rather down and out Marc Bolan, erstwhile king of the British glamrock scene with the mighty T Rex. They get to talking about Bob Dylan, Bolan´s ultimate idol. Bolan recalls how he finally met His Bobness at the house of a mutual friend, the songwriter Harry Nilsson. After listening to Bolan´s effusive praise for several minutes, [...]
Last week in our CPR edition of Friday Mix Tape , Ryan via my recommendation dropped a tune from the Mumford & Sons - whom I described as "the UK's answer to the Avett Brothers". I thought I'd use today's edition of Pullin' 'Tubes to more formally introduce you to the music of this four-piece act who have only been around for a handful of years. The London-based act plays a mix of traditional English inspired folk music, channeled through the high and lonesome sound of American bluegrass with influences from the Beard [...]

As followers of our Twitter are more than aware, Kenny Bloggins has been straight fiendin' the past few weeks. It's probably been annoying as all hell, and I suppose I'm somewhat sorry. But not really - the final season of LOST begins tonight, and we are throwin' down. In the traditional way this blog celebrates all the stupid shit going on in my life, it seemed necessary to throw a Super Swingin' Mix in your vicinity. And hey, it also can serve as sort of a peace offering for my general numberskullery and insolence. So... all the songs below relate [...]

Time to pay some dues here. Or: presenting some artists I discovered through the enthusiastic posts of fellow music bloggers over the past couple of years. So here´s a ten pack of pure gratitude, featuring soul from Terry Callier, Rodriguez, Shuggie Otis and Syl Johnson, folk from the Incredible String Band, country by Willis Alan Ramsey and Tom T. Hall (cheers Paul!), afrofunk by Segun Bucknor and more modern sounds by Wooden Shjips and Sunburned Hand Of The Man. And yup, I actually bought [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Count Five Robyn Hitchcock 's got a bit of Yuletide on the brain this year: Anyone who buys his current 'I Often Dream of Trains in New York' live DVD will be rewarded with a Christmas ornament. Now he and Hannah Bird have teamed up to direct a short video called ' The Day Before Boxing Day ,' which retells the Nativity through animated vegetables and other sundries. In that spirit, Spinner asked Hitchcock for five of [...]
Ah, 1968. I remember it well... well, I remember interviewing, if you can call it that, the Incredible String Band (ISB) for School Magazine . Not the actual School Magazine but, like, an alternative one, man. A rather pale version of Oz which all too briefly became the subversive vehicle of the Lower Sixth. At age 16, somehow I had pushed my way into the band's dressing room at Manchester's Free Trade [...]

My recent enjoyment of the new Epsers album got me listening to the first couple of Fairport Convention albums, which in turn got me revisiting many of my favorite albums of the same era, which also constitute much of the production work of Joe Boyd. For those unfamiliar with Boyd, I cannot recommend highly enough his memoir " White Bicycles: Making Music in the the 1960s " which follows Boyd's journey from tour manager in the early sixties, overseeing tours for the likes of Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt, Stan Getz and [...]
Scotland. The country that claims Braveheart, kilts, the Loch Ness Monster, and single-malt whisky has been the birthplace and home to many of music's greatest artists. From folk to hard rock, here's a look at ten great Scottish acts. 1. Lonnie Donegan – Lonnie Donegan's influence on a generation of musicians has been huge, particularly in and around Britain, where his blending of blues, country, folk, and jazz ushered in the "skiffle" craze. Thousands of young wannabes got swept up, including a pre-Beatles Paul McCartney. Recommended album: Rides Again . 2. Donovan [...]

Two weeks in China! Oh, the amazing things we have seen-and eaten! Mr. Folkie's daughter, the Professional Foreigner (see link to her blog under Favorites), has been our indispensible companion. We traveled hundreds of miles by train because Mr. Folkie wanted to see pandas (you can have your photo taken with one on your lap if you want) and eat Sichuan food in Sichuan. We bought tickets for sleeping compartments on our train trips. I can't tell you how exciting it is to wake up on a train and find views like people working the rice [...]
With a spirit that conjures images of deep, dark woods from a bygone era, listenlisten 's sound is communal, often featuring a chorus of chanting voices bolstered by gently plucked guitars, swelling horns, and swirling strings.

Derby's a strange scene in Louisville. There are limos driving all up and down Bardstown Road. It's totally strange and possibly stupid. Guess it's good for the local economy. One of my best friends is in town taking photos of Paris Hilton's party at the toolbox known as Fourth Street Live. No photos are allowed of her, though - which is kind of an odd thought considering her entire existence is contingent on hangin' out and dudes being stoked on that. One of my coworkers told me that there's a pretty swank Derby gala right up the street from Bloggins [...]

Filed under: Around the World The Ukrainians still aren't. Ukrainians, that is. Closing in on 20 years from its beginning, the band remains what it has always been -- a compelling English folk-rock ensemble, spun off from the Leeds post-punk phenom the Wedding Present to give some boisterous rock-informed treatment to tunes with Ukrainian roots and/or inspiration. And still, with a new album, 'Diaspora' (released by the band's Zirka Records and in the U.S. on Omnium Recordings ), quite good at it, as you can plainly hear in [...]
