The Irish Rovers : The Unicorn [ purchase ] The Irish Rovers were a Canadian band whose members were all born in Northern Ireland. Their highest charting song in the U.S. was this tune, which isn't about Ireland or immigrants, but is associated with the theme because of the band. The words to the tune are based on a poem by Shel Silverstein, which is in a slightly different form in Where the Sidewalk Ends." Silverstein isn't Irish either, but he was successful writing songs for other people. [...]
I've pretty much been going nonstop since before the UMS weekend and have fallen dreadfully behind in actually blogging all of the UMS coverage. Sunday left me musically sated with a day full of great people and great music. Birdy at the Hornet I heard the gorgeous vocals from Birdy while walking down Broadway, so I thought I'd pop in to see this band. The Hornet was packed with people enjoying the set. It was definitely worth checking out- a [...]
Most people probably know Shel Silverstein as that guy who wrote lovable stuff for kids, like the book Where The Sidewalk Ends and A Light In The Attic and The Giving Tree . If you have kids, you probably read these to them at one point or another. But your kids have probably never seen some of Shel's early work - hope not, anyway. The guy got his start in the 1950s working for Playboy magazine and its founder Hugh Hefner. Silverstein drew cartoons and wrote poetry for that [...]
Ballyshannon Town in Donegal by dingbat2005 I felt pretty sorry that I forgot to add a traditional instrumental Irish jig to today's radioshow, because it's St. Patrick's Day today. I don't quite remember days like these but I have always felt some connection with Ireland perhaps because of the green fields or the beer/fight/curse culture, so I decided to unload some traditional stuff today for St. Paddy's Day which according to wikipedia can be celebrated best in parades wearing green and drinking beer !!. St. Paddy's [...]
Today in Music History: In 1992, during a Metallica gig at Orlando Arena fans dangled an usher by his ankles from the balcony as trouble broke out at the concert. The band was charged $38,000 for repairs and cleaning after the audience trashed the building. Over last weekend I read an article about blogging that was interesting. The article said that this "fad" has peaked and that from 2006 to the present over 200 million blogs have been abandoned. The bottom line seemed to [...]

Kiss me I'm Homercat
Yep, St Pattys Day is today and on a day when everyone seems or claims to be Irish, the green beer will be flowing like raging rivers of spring floods. I know I haven't been posting a lot but real world stuff like work and real life gets in the way. There's no way I could miss a post about St. Patrick's Day .The songs I'm serving up today are some classic Irish drinking songs and may well have been featured here before at one time or another. In fact they may be featured on [...]
