Beer Corpse - Keg Nuts I know what you're thinking. You read that band name and thought 'I'm one hundred percent positive these guys play ultra-melodic power ballads'. Well I hate to break it to you waveriders, but Beer Corpse is actually a grindcore outfit. I know?! I was shocked too! Thankfully I was able to quickly dismiss my melodious hopes and dreams and get down and dirty with this band's glorious grind. Here's what little I know about Beer Corpse . They are [...]

Keep Your Powder Dry is the new EP from New York's country-rockers The Izzys . The EP is structured a little methodically: upbeat-downbeat-upbeat-downbea t-big closer, and the downbeat numbers are good—but not good enough. The second song, "Under the Sun," sounds vaguely like the Beatles—but it's a little too slow, and definitely the weakest track here. But it's still eminently listenable. Best of all, it's followed by the ass-kicking Neil Young-like guitar crunch of "You Are Free," an instant country rock classic that's well worth the price of the entire EP. But the structure speaks volumes: The band has made [...]
So the weekend is finally almost upon us and the concert gods have given us a lot to be thankful for. Tonight in Baltimore the Talking Head has the Expontentials , The Izzy's, and The Jagged Hearts while the trip hoppers Thievery Corporation play Rams Head Live. Down in DC the Rock and Roll Hotel has a good one with Tapes 'n Tapes, Wild Light, and The Subjects. Also in DC are the Howlies , Tiger and the Snow, and Excuses (ex Len Bias) who play the Velvet Lounge and the funk [...]

When I wrote about The Izzys from NYC over a year ago I thought that'd be the last of them (I have that effect on bands) but they've shaken off the S:I curse and resurfaced with a new record. At the time I also thought they were maybe a bit of a one trick pony; able to play stonesy, r&b-fueled rock but little else. I was wrong about that too, sure on "Madman Sleeps" the guitars rage and the lead singer struts his stuff (vocally that is), but on the title track, "The Violent [...]
