This what your redneck neighbor's back yard will look like on Thanksgiving Editor's Note: In the interest of preserving the environment this holiday season, we are recycling some old blog posts. Don't worry - most of the links work. Are you gonna deep fry a turkey this Thanksgiving? Put the fire department on speed dial - especially if you're gonna be hoisting a few. Actually I do have some experience with this, and I will attest that the first and most important step in deep frying [...]
Aggro-rockers venture into the muddy waters of the seventies for a very fun, if slightly guilty sounding pleasure.
Tommy Bolin was one of the great '70s guitar gods, a charismatic, stylish, one-of-a-kind young talent on the rise. He played in the James Gang after Joe Walsh bolted, then stepped into Deep Purple when Ritchie Blackmore left. Bolin also recorded two solo albums that bounced back and forth from classic rock to ballsy, Zappa-esque [...]
Funk 49 may be the better known classic rock standard, but I've always liked -1 much more. All silliness aside, Joe Walsh is a beast on the guitar.

Li'l Cap'n Travis - Teenage Mustache > James Gang - Walk Away "Braces and a teenage mustache Sit beside me in my Mustang We can listen to the James Gang Turn your pretty head and walk away." We'll get to the James Gang in a second, but first some love for Austin's Li'l Cap'n Travis . Jeff Johnston sings only four lines over a rudimentary piano figure, but it brilliantly captures a singular moment of adolescence. My face is breaking out just thinking about it. [...]

OK, Thanksgiving can begin. I have had my traditional Thanksgiving Day listen to Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant. You may remember last year's post . I'll try not to repeat myself this year. You know, it's funny; I can read something I wrote a year ago and not even recognize it. It's like someone else wrote it. I mean, I recognize the style and the stories, but I have no recollection of having written it. Probably senility on the way right? Song 2 (no, not Blur's overplayed ditty) on this day is fitting. One of my all [...]

This what your redneck neighbor's back yard will look like on Thanksgiving Are you gonna deep fry a turkey this Thanksgiving? Put the fire department on speed dial - especially if you're gonna be hoisting a few. Actually I do have some experience with this, and I will attest that the first and most important step in deep frying a turkey is getting oneself properly hydrated with your favorite beer. I can't really remember when I first saw my crazy Louisiana relatives frying a turkey. It may have been in the 1980s some time; [...]

They've made some beautiful music in 1970 in southern Ohio, perfect Sunday listening. You might recognise the strings at the end. MP3 The James Gang - Ashes The Rain & I (320K) (Mediafire)

I came across this record - the soundtrack for the 1971 movie Zachariah , which was billed at the time as the "first electric western." Do you remember that one? This movie, I believe, was one of the strange films that came out of Hollywood after Easy Rider virtually destroyed the old-school big-studio movie model in 1969. In the wake of that groundbreaking movie, filmmakers saw that there was a huge untapped market in the era's youth - so you had a lot of low-budget movies with avant-garde leanings ... and a lot of rock [...]

This past Halloween I was tipped off by Justin that there was going to be a Black Keys show in Akron this month. Like many, I'm a big fan, so I try to make their shows whenever possible. I even purchased some tickets to the Chicago NYE show (still haven't found anyone to take the trip with me) prior to hearing about their local show, which falls on Black Friday (11/27 the release date of the Blakroc album). The show is at Musica in Akron, a bit of an upscale intimate club. The show honors Alfred McMoore an [...]

Ah yes, the musical exploration and subsequent discovery continues! For this album, I have to thank Racer because without him, well . . . I wouldn't really know anything about Tommy Bolin other than he played in Deep Purple for a short spell and then died. Racer's seemingly endless vat of knowledge on the subject of Tommy Bolin is nothing short of amazing, and a vat that I return to frequently in hopes to gain more and more insight on one of the music world's most overlooked talents. I had an impression that Bolin [...]

James Gang - The Bomber The Mud Hut

The Joe Walsh power trio's second album has no right to be as great as it is. Or as overlooked.

Li'l Cap'n Travis - Teenage Mustache > James Gang - Walk Away "Braces and a teenage mustache Sit beside me in my Mustang We can listen to the James Gang Turn your pretty head and walk away." Please indulge this song pairing, but it pretty much suggests itself. I talked about Li'l Cap'n Travis in my Sam Cooke post the other day, but this 1:27, seeming afterthought of a song, is well worth the double dip. It's only four lines and sung over rudimentary piano, yet [...]

Though it's still summer in the Northern Hemisphere, we're heading for the homestretch as colleges and university students return, Back To School sales start and vacations end. Here are some tunes that have no particular relevance to the season, outside of helping set the mood for some last minute fun in the sun. Hope it's been a good one so far for one and all. Stetsasonic: Talkin' All That Jazz Hugh Masekela: Grazing In The Grass B&T Express: Express Sly & [...]

The best part, one really gets a feel for their surroundings, rather than the carousel effect of watching the world through the window of a fast moving car, bus or train. I enjoy walking so much that I often try (unsuccessfully) to convert my fellow Southern Californians to leave the car behind and hoof it - this is a place where peeps will jump into their auto to drive two blocks to a fast food joint. Now, there's places humans shouldn't walk and I found that out during a Summer in the Nevada desert. I walked [...]
1970 ABC RECORDS James Gang - a revolving power trio, that dug deep into the rock, blues and country soul. Joe Walsh kicked out the Jams - the strength of the band's musicianship shines here- Producer and Engineer Bill Szymczyk - captured true soul at the The Record Plant in late 1969. The combination of rock steady rhythm, harmonies, and an jungle-like primitive stomp at the bridge- Go deep- Shake that money maker- Let your hair down. Get Busy with some Friday boogie down. - yes.
