Ages ago (i.e. October of last year), Scion held the Scion Garage Fest and showcased a bunch of - you guessed it - garage rock bands. One such band, which doesn't exactly exist anymore, is Costa Mesa, California's Japanese Motors , a band made up of surf enthusiasts and one professional surfer in Alex Knost. But, as they insist in the following interview brought to you by Scion A/V , Japanese Motors were definitely not a surf rock band, despite winning an OC Music Award for surf rock. The band [...]

[Catching up on some recent developments ...] File this under interesting twists: the next album by the Bird and the Bee will be "Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates" (March 23 on Blue Note Records). No irony from the mouths of Greg Kurstin and Inara George here, says the press release: "Their love for the music is genuine." Included: eight cover songs, a new original, and a bit of a mystery — if [...]

I'm happy to see our friends The Limousines on there, John Vanderslice, Mark Kozelek, and Atlas Sound have me pretty much sold right now. Plus double Magnetic Fields shows. One at Oakland's Fox Theater and another at the Herbst Theater. Here's the full list of performers; Magnetic Fields Rogue Wave Harlem Japanese Motors Foreign Born [...]

Los Angeles is a permutation of New York with a mildly less bad attitude. Part of that charm is that on Monday nights some of the venues out in Silverlake host bands for month long residencies. The shows are free and the bills are packed front-to-back with bands looking to break. New York has Piano's four-week residencies but this makes that looks positively fascist. Out here the people know each
