Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Canadian twins Tegan and Sara sure know how to put on a show. At the Aragon in Chicago Friday night, the Quin sisters opened with a handful of new songs from last year's 'Sainthood,' then promised the enthusiastic crowd that after performing the new ones, they'd play the old favorites. The duo, accompanied by a backing band, whisked through six new tunes including the twinkling melodies of 'Alligator' and opener 'Ocean,' then took a moment to address the crowd. [...]

Stepping off the band bandwagon, Holly Miranda has decided to go solo. And with a recent 73 ( Forest Green ), an EP ( Sleep On Fire ) and now a forthcoming LP due out late this month on XL Recordings ( The Magician's Private Library ), her new project is set to take off. She's been on the road, touring the states and then some with a few of last year's favorites: [...]

Sebastian Mlynarski When I rounded up all the bits of information around Holly Miranda's solo project back in January , I had no notion that interest in it would eclipse that given to her main band, The Jealous Girlfriends . But her more atmospheric approach is certainly more in line with what people expect/want to hear wafting out of Brooklyn these days and it has apparently tickled more ears than the Girlfriends' heaver, more guitar-driven rock did. So while the Girlfriends take a deserved break, Miranda has been busy - [...]

I first heard Holly Miranda a little over a year and a half ago when she did a cover of the late Elliott Smith's "Between The Bars" with another great vocalist, Scott Matthews. She has a wide range of vocal ability, from her highs to her lows that can be best explained by watching the video yourself. It gave and still continues to give me goosebumps and is simply wonderful and is as good, if not better, than the original Elliott Smith song. Here is the link to the video via Youtube.com ( Holly Miranda and Scott Matthews - Between [...]

Ian Darken Something I learned yesterday - I wasn't able to get by on three hours of sleep when I was young, I sure as hell can't do it now. Blogging isn't so easy when your brain has the consistency of porridge, so I'm thankful that there's been a pile of new videos, sessions and streams amassing in my drafts folder which I can hopefully distill into some sort of post. And we'll begin with Athens, Georgia's Venice Is Sinking , who've got a new video, stream AND MP3 to share, all in honour of their [...]

Okay, okay! I give in! Since several of you (ahem, Ashley) have been asking for another iTunes mixery, here you go. It's true - I haven't done one in a while and I apologize. But there's so much great new music to keep up with, so forgive me. For those who don't know, this is iTunes Mixery part cuatro. Here's how it goes: I play iTunes on shuffle -> tell you which song comes up -> provide the mp3 and a tidbit -> continue until five songs and embarrassment are complete. See my previous "mixeries" at the bottom [...]
I have laid around like a dead fish for the latter part of the day. I am so lazy and tired because I have been doing nothing for the last 5 hours, hey I have to prepare for the upcoming work week right? So in the spirit of well... nothing... I have decided to close my eyes and press play. Enjoy your Sunday night. mp3: Hieroglyphics The Jealous Girlfriends 2007 ( Last Gang Records ) Also [...]

Jeremy Balderson Blog? Don't blog? Blog? Don't blog? Fuck it. Blog. Brooklyn's Jealous Girlfriends have been good to their word of taking 2009 off, but their individual components have hardly been idle. As reported back in January , singer Holly Miranda was working on a solo project and that's now manifested itself as a five-song EP entitled Sleep On Fire . You can download an acoustic version of one of the tracks on her website, and she's playing some US dates [...]

The Jealous Girlfriends - Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want [The Smiths] It's one of the Smiths' most popular songs, and it's featured on more than four films.

Doves So the great and powerful Moz turned the big 5-0 last week - do you think that when being presented with gifts, he thought, "please, please, please let me get what I want this time"? No, probably not. But even if I personally don't care for much of what he's done post- Smiths , I salute the man on the occasion of his half-century. And I'm sure his fellow Mancunians in Doves do likewise. No strangers themselves to the mopey end of rock, Doves paid tribute [...]

Sorry it's been so quiet round these parts for so long, hopefully that will change soon. Until then... something for anyone still watching the snow fall. Holly Miranda - Waves and if you like this, look out for 'Slow Burn Treason' featuring Kyp Malone from TV on the Radio featured on blogs from Pitchfork to Kanye West, and for more on Holly [...]

Waves - Holly Miranda Need that song for the 2:44pm daydream at your desk? Check out Waves from Holly Miranda , lead singer from Brooklyn's Jealous Girlfriends . A beautiful combination of organs melting into walls of reverb, a sexy voice and a distant tambourine fighting to be heard against the backing drums. It comes from her debut record, which was produced by TVOTR 's David Sitek . Both the Tripwire and P4K have another track from the album, [...]

[Holly Miranda in 3D, Photo by Celesta Danger] A friend of the Tripwire sent us the new Holly Miranda record a couple weeks ago and we've been obsessed with the song "Slow Burn Treason" ever since. Despite the fact she just finished the recording and has yet to announce any release plans (we were told by her management it is coming out "later this year"), we're going to go on the record saying this is the best record David Sitek has produced since Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes . [...]

Celeste Danger , Elisabeth Young Having spent most of 2008 on the road and working their self-titled debut to death, Brookyln's Jealous Girlfriends are quite understandably taking the first part of this year off to recover and recharge. And, in the case of singer/guitarist Holly Miranda , work on a solo record. Well, judging from her MySpace blog , work on the solo record has been ongoing for some time - since late 2007 at least - but presumably the time available now will allow it to wrapped up and hopefully see [...]

Washington DC – Hello, this is the first posting by me, Tom, the Panic Manual's new correspondent located in Washington DC. My roots are Canadian, but my studies have taken me into a foreign and strange land…albeit a land filled with good music and good place to listen to music. I am going to start this post with a brief review about the Washington DC music scene, as well as the 9:30 Club as a venue. Now, Washington DC has a quite diverse and varied musical past . [...]

Tonight I am only concerned with the 9:30 Club in DC and Nada Surf, The Jealous Girlfriends, and The Delta Spirit. If I had to focus on something else though I might have to trek on over to the University Of Maryland, College Park where Lupe Fiasco is playing it cool. Or perhaps if I was in Philly I'd stomp on over to the Fire and check Illinois, Orbit To Leslie, and Cicadian Rhythms. But Nada Surf is the main event and that's all I'm concerned with. mp3: Nada Surf - Blankest Year [...]

Yeasayer (photo from r5productions ) Following a great start to the week and month, Thursday has a bunch of shows to check out. After a night in the District, Yeasayer is coming to the First Unitarian tonight for their first Philly show in almost a year. IPod commercial featured artist Chairlift joins them. mp3: Yeasayer - Sunrise mp3: Chairlift - Bruises Bluegrass meets punk sprinkled with Celtic overtones is probably [...]
