The rather excellent London based label Something In Construction have unleashed their brand spanking new website onto the public today. It features a whole bevvy of information on their current roster plus up to date news, shop and a rather nice links section that says rather nice things about this very site. Check it out here . Also currently available to download for free is the most recent Something In Construction label sampler which features a whole host of TLOBF favourties. Download the sampler below [...]

It's rather impossible to not notice Holly Miranda, singer/guitarist for Brooklyn-based band The Jealous Girlfriends, once she starts to sing. Her voice is an ever-changing thing, ethereal at one moment, growling the next, a voice that could find itself equally at home on a My Bloody Valentine record or an episode of Grey's Anatomy (yes, they had a song featured on the show - as an unsigned band no less). The Jealous Girlfriends take on a whole host of styles and genres, as Holly and co-singer/guitarist Josh Abbott rip through numbers both catchy ("Something in the Water") [...]
Anything else? Yeh, it's one of those moods, and I probably shouldn't write even this much. I was very pleased to see that moderately buzzy Brooklynites The Jealous Girlfriends are coming to town for a show at the Drake on October 9. I've only heard the samples of their self-titled full-length on CD Baby , from whence you can also buy the CD-R as I just did, as well as the smattering of full tracks available here and there, and while they cascade from style to style, they maintain a home base of pop hooks, 'gazey guitars and atmospheric production to match but their secret weapon is singer/guitarist Holly Miranda, whose riveting [...]
The Jealous Girlfriends - The pink wig to my Salieri (MP3)

Some cities are simply blessed with a ceaselessly active music scene. While most major cities have their share of prominently historical artists to tout about, there are few that can accurately describe their city as still being an organic breeding ground for artists with heaps of potential. I have covered dozens of bands from Brooklyn, New York during my time here, with the wide stylistic range impressing me the most over the sheer number of artists themselves. From gritty rock 'n' roll ( Pela ) and funky art-rock ( The Virgins ) to catchy electro-pop ( Mixel Pixel ) and [...]

I am exhausted from this extremely rough week. It may be the heat or it could be one of a million other contributing factors, but whatever it may be it is the weekend now and its time to relax with a slew of free shows and a couple of not so free choices. I also plan on seeing a movie at some point this weekend, though I don't know how feasible that will be with an already jam packed weekend. Friday: Well I've spent the past two weeks at the Seaport for [...]

I'm amazed at the amount of emails I received over the weekend asking me about the In The City Of New York shows... With the Mondays shows not happening now (and based on reports of some recent shows not being very happening even when they show up...), a seriously decent way to spend your Wednesday night would be at The Annex for the party our pals at Filter and ASCAP are throwing in conjunction with ITCNY... [...]

Dear friends, I have been crippled cracked all week hence my general absence. Also, holidays! Don't cry for me though. I have love AND insurance. That's enough to make me feel safe in this big bad world. Turkey, anyone? I've been quietly stalking the The Jealous Girlfriends ever since I accidentally * caught them at Mercury Lounge last year. I'm a sucker for vocal twin-ing and singers Holly Miranda and Josh Abbott definitely have that golden hum sound down. [...]
First off, in non-related news, we were mentioned by folks at the comprehensive Idolator.com (the article) music resource yesterday and it made my afternoon much brighter. If you follow this blog or the MySpace group with any regularity, you know our 2006 end of year list built a substantial amount of steam towards its quiet finale. It was only mentioned by a handful of other blogs

Brooklyn, NY "Something In The Water" from The Jealous Girlfriends was recently featured on the hit show Grey's Anatomy . I checked out the rest of the band's album and instantly became smitten. Here's the first track on their self-titled release and it's just a preview of how nicely layered the rest of this disc is. "Machines" [...]

Back in Indy and catching up on some past episodes of missed TV before college football takes over this morning. Couple bands that I knew of and one I didn't caught my ear. The Jealous Girlfriends have had their music featured on both The L Word and Grey's Anatomy , so they are osmosisizing (Is that word!? It is now.) their way into the mainstream consciousness. A few blogs have picked up on them, and they have a varied sound [...]

The Jealous Girlfriends are an on-the-rise New York band that don't fit neatly into any genre but are good enough that you don't really care. All their sounds are linked by an ear for great guitar riffs and melodies that as one reviewer put "stick to you memory gland like putty." They're definitely a band to watch for in the upcoming months. The band has a new self-titled album out that is full of highlights. "The Pink Wig to Salieri" which is an extremely well-constructed dream pop tune. With a great mix of shoegaze guitars and [...]
