The Joy Formidable – "Whirring" When Welsh rock trio The Joy Formidable resolved to record the follow-up to last year's critically praised debut, The Big Roar , the band did not settle on a studio in New York, Los Angeles or their home base of London. Instead, vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bassist/boyfriend Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas decamped to a cabin in the woods of Maine. Bryan said her band, which kicks off a 2012 tour with two sold-out shows at The Independent next week, enjoys being [...]
![[SKOA Premiere] The Joy Formidable - "Austere (Alan Wilkis Remix)"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4117648_lg.jpg)
SKOA favorite Alan Wilkis was commissioned to crank out this killer remix for "Austere" by The Joy Formidable alongside the release of EA Sports ' new SSX game . Wilkis, who was already a big fan of The Joy Formidable, told us of his approach to the remix: "I really wanted to try to bring the song into electronic territory while hopefully preserving the thrashy-rock-awesomeness of the original version." After having a listen to the track, I think that you'll agree with us that he has done just that. Fortunately [...]

Once upon a time a Clarks show in Shoreditch would've been about as oxymoronic as the likes of Get People swaggering around atop the soles of the aforesaid brand. Now however, an ill-advisedly embroidered Swarovski aside, with their schoolyard leathers, laces and desert boots experiencing a spot of flagrant renaissance they've been afforded the heavily-polished opportunity to tug Brixton-based trio The Joy Formidable about the hidden alcoves and humongous warehouses of Manchester, Bristol and, tonight, London for an exclusive show or three. Schnooking down Shoreditch cranny to a hollowed-out factory (the [...]

Never believe the hype unless you're a sucker. Hype only exists for bands that are merely trendy and not necessarily talented. They are a band of the moment and nothing else. Luckily for us, one highly publicized band doesn't fall into that category. They are the hottest band to emerge from New Zealand since Flight of the Conchords (Okay, they are a comedy duo, but music is a huge part of their act so cut me some slack, gosh). After releasing two EPs, This Machine and No Light, The Naked and Famous released their debut album Passive Me, Aggressive [...]

For Valentine's day this year, AC Entertainment decided to give its fans one of the best loving gifts any music festival-goer could ask for, the lineup for Bonnaroo's 11th year. The Joy Formidable @ Cat's Cradle The headliners include Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish and The Beach Boys. What I found particularly neat about this year's lineup is many of the acts chosen for Bonnaroo have made visits to the triangle's venues in the past year or plan to in the next few months - The Beach [...]
I've never been to Bonnaroo. I've always wanted to go but I never had the money/didn't have the time/wasn't impressed by the line up. But I am making it my mission to get down to Tennessee this year for the 'Roo because, dammit, I wanna listen to good music while on lots of drugs. The line up for the Bonnaroo festival has been announced and it's quite a big one this year. Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phish are headlining this year's installment. Other acts including The Beach Boys, Bon Iver, The [...]

A hidden gem lies within Grouplove, the latest LA band worth discovering. Like Black Kids and Local Natives before them, Grouplove emerged as the next big band from Los Angeles. Living in Southern California I'm frequently exposed to numerous new, exciting bands like indie rock band Grouplove. Ever since I first heard their single "Colours" off their self-titled EP Grouplove last year I instantly fell in love with them. Released by Canvasback Music and Atlantic Records last January, I knew it would be a matter of time before they debut their first album. Grouplove stands as my favorite [...]

The annual Sasquatch festival, definitely a festival that I need to attend in the very near future, announced a killer line up for this year's installment. Recently solo Jack White, along with Beck and Bon Iver, will be headlining the George, WA based three-day event. Also leading the way are Pretty Lights, Tenacious D, The Shins, Girl Talk, St. Vincent, Feist, and Silversun Pickups. But that's not all who you'll get to see at the Gorge Ampitheatre this year. Also performing this year are Metric, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, The Head [...]

Don't have the Joy Formidable 's album 'The Big Roar' yet? It was released a year ago so you don't have much excuse for not having it. However, if for some reason you've missed this great band (though I'm not really sure how this is possible, after Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters proclaimed his love for them and took them out on tour in America), you can listen to and download album track 'A Heavy Abacus' below. And we were remiss for not posting the song's official video, [...]

Unfortunately, what was supposed to be HBO's Entourage replacement only lasted two seasons. The dropping of the axe on How To Make It In America didn't come as a surprise to most, as the TV program was mainly famous for starring Kid Cudi. But while the show, which followed two friends (Ben Epstein and Cam Calderon) trying to succeed in New York's competitive fashion scene, was far from perfect, its soundtrack was quite impressive. Today's playlist comprises dance, hip hop, electronic, and indie rock – our way of bidding adieu to the [...]
