J ust finished the fantastic Juliana Hatfield memoir, When I Grow Up . If you are looking for something new to read, and haven't read this yet, I can recommend this book. For someone who is so shy, and awkward in person, it's good to see how well she can communicate with her writing. Her attention to detail makes you feel as if you are riding around in the van with her. I found my self nodding in agreement at many [...]

If you have read this blog for any amount of time, you know I have not hidden my affection for talented singer, songwriter and guitarist, Juliana Hatfield. Her album, Become What You Are , remains one of my favorites and, in my opinion, was one of the best albums of the 90s. She recently took part in the Bruce Springsteen's "Hangin' Out On E Street" project with an excellent cover of "Cover Me" and she also just put out a new CD, How To Walk Away. [...]

I am on vacation, but it's a staycation. With the wedding and then Thanksgiving, I figured I'd just take the in-between days off. I just listened all the way through the new Juliana Hatfield CD "How To Walk Away" (released August, 2008.) This album is so perfect that it prompted an immediate, somewhat bungled, blog post! The lyrics are honest and appeal to where I am at the moment. Maybe, the lyrics to track 5, "Just Lust" are too honest. That song is almost mean, but honesty can be cruel. "Remember November" should be experienced [...]

Hey, kids, it's April 10th (yes, just barely. I know. I meant to post this much earlier. The dog ate my homework, etc.) That means it's Siblings Day ! In the United States, that is, although I suppose there's nothing to stop non-Americans from appreciating their brothers and sisters today (okay, tonight . Geesh. I don't remember buying a ticket for a guilt trip.) Naturally, what with freaking grown-ups running the world (into the ground), Siblings Day isn't quite as familiar as Mother's Day and Father's Day, so it's understandable if a lot of [...]

Did I ever tell you all how much I love Big Dipper? The Boston quartet were one of the finest indie rock bands of the late 80s, more tuneful, more talented, and simply more spirited than most of their contemporaries (many of whom I also love). But the story truly begins with the seminal (the reproductive connotation is appropriate here, considering the number of bands they spawned) "nerd-punk" band The Embarrassment, whose immortal classic is the Art Carney name-dropping "Celebrity Art Party." The Embarrassment - "Celebrity Art Party" That band's [...]

Here is the third part of the soundtrack mix. You can check out Part 1 and Part 2 if you missed them. For this part of the mix, I've included only films from the 1990's. The songs either appeared on the original soundtrack or was used in the film. There are only two songs that do not appear on the original soundtrack album. The first is Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" from the film Pump Up The Volume . For the album, they used the Concrete Blonde's cover of [...]
