And now three reasons to high-tail it on over to Schubas this evening... 1. It's the final Monday in March, so that means it's the last night of The Kickback's residency at Schubas. I must give props to The Kickback for booking some excellent locals to jam with them this month, which is why we're spotlighting one of tonight's supporting acts: The Dirty Pigeons . This Chicago act offers up a sizzling batch of laid back Midwestern roots and folk rock. But most of all The Dirty Pigeons seem to [...]

Three reasons to get out while it's still 80 degrees and right into Schubas this evening... 1. It's Monday, so that means it's another Kickback residency night at Schubas. I must give props to The Kickback for booking some excellent locals to jam with them this month, which is why we're spotlighting one of tonight's supporting acts, Pet Lions . The local indie rock quartet seem to have a good handle on infectious melodies and danceable grooves based on their latest release, Houses . But [...]

St. Patty's Day Weekend have you stricken with a severe case of the Mondays? For Chicagoans, just power through the workday, then head to Schubas Tavern for some aural therapy courtesy of the brothers Yost and the rest of The Kickback . For everyone else, we suggest a comfortable night on the couch customizing your settings for the recently launched CoS mobile app . The third installment of the March residency welcomes Chicago's own Pet Lions , Panda Riot , and Cali's Mister Loveless . Tickets are still available for [...]

Making the monthly mixes usually results in having a bunch of good songs orphaned. In the past, I've had enough leftover material to make half editions of the Blogophilia mixes. This usually leads to confusion and questions about why have a half mix at all. I am not a fan of confusion, nor do I like to explain myself. So I've decided that there will be no more "half mixes" posted on the blog. Instead, we'll have a Biscuits & Gravy series, which reflects a surplus of good music that never made it to the monthly mix. I am a [...]

And now three reasons to celebrate Pulaski Day by rocking out at Schubas tonight... 1. Another month, another month-long residency at Schubas that features an up-and-coming Chicago act. Every Monday in March brings indie rockers The Kickback to the Lakeview bar. I really dug the Kickback's 2010 EP, Great Self Love , as it showcased a versatile band with the chops to boot. On it, the band crafted tight, melodic pop songs that still featured quite a bit of edge via alt-rock leaning guitars [...]

Violently Carsick by The Kickback " We recorded this after our fans helped us win a Deli reader's poll and got us some free studio time. The song was originally supposed to be a take on the song "Route 66" for a Red Bull tour diary, but they didn't seem to be down with our turning it into a six-minute ramblethon and not really using the words, and we can't really blame them. But they still suck. Thanks for making this yours. " -- from The Kickback's Bandcamp page Jim [...]

Consequence of Sound is proud to present The Kickback' s month-long residency at Chicago's Schubas Tavern. Each Monday in March, the South Dakota-turned Chicago rockers will perform alongside an exciting new bill, fully stocked with special guests chosen by both the band and Consequence of Sound . The residency kicks off Monday, March 5th at 8 p.m., and features local heroes Mutts and Psychic Twin . Tickets are currently priced at $6 and available online . This show is 18+. Further bills for March 12th, 19th, and the 26th will [...]

South Dakota to Chicago and who knows where else The Kickback will go. They'll start a weekly residency at Schuba's in Chicago beginningMarch 5, and playing there every Monday night in March. We're presenting the single, "Violently Carsick", which was meant to serve as an entry for The Kickback's Red Bull tour diary. The length of the track (it is over 6 minutes) seemed to be troublesome for Red Bull. Let's just say corporate folk aren't the brightest, when it comes music. "Violently Carsick" is brilliant. It plays on the [...]
Violently Carsick by The Kickback Chicago, IL via Sioux Falls, SD, indie rockers The Kickback have released a new single, "Violently Carsick," and it's pretty epic. According to the band's Bandcamp , the song was recorded as a take on the song "Route 663 for a Red Bull Tour Diary (possibly the "Rock The Route" tour feat. locals Young Jesus and Brighton, MA ?), but was rejected because the band changed the lyrics and turned into a big ol' indie rocker that's considerably cathartic. Regardless if it [...]

Some have suggested that getting a hit song by sampling a previous hit some and backpacking on its awesomeness just feels like... cheating. To them, it seems as if the success is less pure - a "sloppy seconds" experience, if you will, however indiscernible said sloppiness may be. The problem is this ignores the history of, well, music. If Mozart and Beethoven had tape recorders and turntables, I have no doubt they would have skipped piano lessons for the studio. Great composers have "borrowed" melodies from others since the term "composer" existed. That's the way we learn music. [...]

Another week come and gone, another batch of fresh music. As much as I've tried to have some order and method to this playlist, I'm realizing it's harder to stick to one genre each week than it is to have a random assortment of jams. But hey, everyone needs a little spice to shuffle up their weekly routine, right? So, since there is no particular method to the madness of this round-up, I've selected five songs that I just can't get enough of this week. The Kickback makes me nostalgic for lazy, crazy summer days. Both [...]

Mea Culpa EP by The Kickback Chicago indie-rock band The Kickback have been building up a buzz with write-ups by The Deli Magazine and RollingStone.com. RollingStone.com described the band as a " high drama Chicago-based rock band that conjures the very best parts of The Veils and The Walkmen and The Killers, writing lean, nervy songs that snarl and snap ". The Kickback just released their fourth disc "Mea Culpa Mea Culpa" which is a strong four-track EP that combines the [...]

Their MySpace page claims The Kickback to sound like "the Zombies listening to Jeff Buckley listening to a moderately-talented church choir listening to The Beatles in the 'back to basics' stage of their career who would stay together long enough to be influenced by the Sales brothers who wound up backing Iggy Pop in the 'Berlin era'." I have absolutely no idea what that means but I do know that I like what I hear. Mea Culpa Mea Culpa is a no nonsense EP who's only flaw is the short 17 minute duration. Each track [...]

'Mea Culpa Mea Culpa' is the new four-song EP from Chicago-based band the Kickback. Formed while front man Billy Yost was a student at University of South Dakota, the Kickback espouse tuneful guitar rock with intriguing but often indiscernible lyrics. Their vivacious and burly sound barely masks the good natured, small town sensibility inherent in their song-writing. Their tunes evoke Harry Nillson and Randy Newman, Todd Rundgren and Elvis Costello. In their own words, their sound yearns to be: "the Zombies listening to Jeff Buckley listening to a moderately-talented church choir listening to The Beatles in the "back to basics" [...]

Originally they come from South Dakota, but call Chicago their home now. The Kickback , who played about 300 concerts in the last two years, is a group consisting of four young lads that first attracted attention due to their explosive live performances. But not only their shows seem to be great, also their music gives proof of a talent to write dynamic and catchy rock songs, which might remind you of The Walkmen among others. On their first EP Mea Culpa Mea Culpa you can find four the implied songs, making The Kickback's first [...]
