Thank Dave Davies, metal kids. Punk kids, too. His idea to take a razor to his Elpico prior to the Kinks' recording the distortion-soaked "You Really Got Me" birthed a thousand garage bands. "Little Green Amp" takes you right back there. Part of Davies' forthcoming solo album I Will Be Me, due on June 4, 2013 via Cleopatra Records, this [...]
Catz 'n Dogz and KiNK's long awaited release of "Good Love" is finally here. If you've been to an underground show or festival in the past weeks, you've probably heard it's catchy looped vocal segment played out by a cast of top-tier acts. The track sees its release on Claude VonStroke's dirtybird records - the imprint that has been setting the standard for bass-centric tech house. These two acts have brought to fruition a bouncy summertime jam set for the peak-time hours. Purchase: Beatport [...]
[TL; DR: DOWNLOAD HERE ] We suppose to begin at the beginning would be to report that in the summer of 1993 we were driving with the windows down one afternoon in Ardmore, PA, the radio was dialed to Princeton's WPRB, and then we first heard "Claire Hates Me" by Lilys . The tune is a rush of dense guitar and gently modulating melody with an impassioned vocal, so nice it was released twice: first as one side of a split 7" as part of Simple [...]
Catz n' Dogz have really been blowing up over the last year and have teaming up with a range of producers inclusive of Justin Martin, Claude Von Stroke and dOP, delivering big hitting tunes. This time round they have teamed up with the KiNK and proved to the world that they should be working together more often. The Love EP delivers two sides of the house genre, with Good love bringing a more deep house/tech vibe, with the tune being driven by a punchy bass ostinato, whilst Bad Love delivers a more a darker twist on the former, with more [...]
Yeah, we usually do five songs but we decided to do six today. The good thing about the underground music scene is that there aren't any rules or regulations. Everything is a guideline. That's why the music is better down here. With that being said we present you Rolling in the Deep Vol. 16 , another sickly batch of disgustingly deep and noisy tunes! Happy Mother's day to all the Mothers out there! The mysterious Matthew Dear lets KiNK take the reigns for this remix. Featuring some amazing modulated synth [...]
Catz ‘n Dogz & KiNK – Good Love (Preview) Forthcoming on Dirtybird.
The ongoing New York Times obsession with "hipsters" continued this week with yet another lifestyle article about Williamsburg, a place that the NYT apparently thinks is still home to the Brooklyn cool set. The piece served as more confirmation that the Times is officially the only publication that still thinks the word "hipster" actually means something and/or is a cultural phenomenon worth analyzing in 2013. At this point, the paper's ongoing obsession with Williamsburg is the journalistic equivalent of the repressed bro at school who's secretly fascinated by the weird kids and deals with this [...]
The concept of the covers record is, in itself, an inherently disorienting experience as once cherished songs are heaved, hoed and traditionally hauled out of the cozy comfort zone that familiarity so often incurs within the musical world. Though to hear Buzz Osborne's sludge mongers the Melvins shred their cruddy way through a couple minutes of Black Betty which sound as though the sonic equivalent to the exhumed entrails of Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter himself dusted down and swung overhead to exude a blackened, gritty blend of fetid blood and granular dirt, is positively dizzying as the Afro-American [...]

This past weekend music festival season went into high gear as thousands descended upon Indio for the 12th installment of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival . Earlier this month fest organizers Goldenvoice and the town of Indio reached a long-term deal that would keep the event, along with its country music cousin Stagecoach, there through 2030. According to the LA Times , in addition to the 17-year deal for the April event, Goldenvoice would also be allowed to host two additional concerts each fall starting in 2014, with capacities of 75,000 and 99,000 people respectively. While there [...]
Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks Well, it was actually cloudy. Bad start. It was Sunday though, yesterday in fact. And I was lazing. Full on. Pants off. Couch on. Watching The Masters on TV. Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera battling it out for the green jacket. It's about half three in the afternoon. Tired enough [...]
We've been following the career of Lissie since all the way back to December of 2009, right around the time that the singer-songwriter released her five-song EP of soulful, sun-baked folk-rock called Why You Runnin' . Since then Ms. Maurus has dropped her full-length debut, an EP of radically rearranged covers ranging from Metallica to Kid Cudi to Lady Gaga, toured the world and played just about every major music festival around. Last week Lissie gave a preview of her yet-to-be-named sophomore album, which is rumored to be hitting stores this spring, by [...]
Where the Chill Dojo once meant trying to discover a collection of worthy songs to compile into a playlist, the objective has quickly changed into trying to keep up with the stack of amazing music that is being released week on week. It's impossible to find and show everything, but what we do have is the best of what your ears should be listening to for this edition. Though featuring only a few days ago on the site , Bondax's incredible remix of 'Open' is that good it deserves another mention, [...]
Woods often has an anachronistic sound, especially on last year's brilliant Bend Beyond . So why wouldn't the band cover a 1971 Kinks song, God's Children? The song will be the B-side on an upcoming 7-inch.
It's hard to make a breezy, warm pop song from the '70s sound breezier and warmer in the '10s, but that's just what Woods manage to do with their cover of The Kinks' "God's Children". The Brooklyn psych-rock band rewrap the lead cut off The Kinks' somewhat messy soundtrack to the somewhat messy movie Percy (which is about the world's first penis transplant, don't you know) into a summery tune that sounds more like a classic Simon & Garfunkel song than anything else. It's a remarkable cover in that it's almost too faithful to [...]
The excellently laid-back campfire classic rockers in Woods release music at a furious clip, and their next missive will arrive in the form of a new 73 in a few months. That single's B-side is a warm and jangly cover of the Kinks' " God's Children ," a song from the soundtrack of the 1971 movie Percy - one that's somehow less lo-fi than the Ray Davies original. Listen to the Woods version below. Read More...
