Blackmore's Night Shines Bright!
The Kinks Part 3. 'You Really Got Me' was not just the first real Heavy Rock song (see ABON 0169 ) and the Top Ten UK single that saved The Kinks from being dropped by their label, it was also the band's breakthrough hit in the USA. It single-handedly catapulted The Kinks into a starring role in the British Invasion of the USA that had been gathering more and more momentum since the beginning of 1964 when The Beatles had charted and toured in the USA for the first time. Although 'You Really Got [...]

In a world full of trouble, people like the chance to focus on something positive - so, even though they're all royal and all the baggage that comes with that, there are still a lot of people around the world who are interested, even excited, by the royal wedding next Friday of Prince William and [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Say what you want about Earth Day but awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment is pretty much a no-brainer. It's not about green corporate logos or throwing the wrapper for your Big Mac into the trashcan (instead of out your car window). It's about doing your part to keep this little blue ball we live on beautiful and thriving. We at MOR like oxygen, green leaves and clean water as much as the next guy so we've put together a playlist of songs appropriate for this special day. Break out your bicycle, put on the headphones [...]
As wild and crazy Kinks' fans since childhood, the latest chatter out this past week regarding a possible Kinks' reunion is somewhat nerve-racking when it should be cause for jubilation. But hard-core Kinks' fans know the fragile relationship of brothers Ray and Dave Davies, could snap expectations of a reunion into pieces, as it has [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
Other than those remastered Kinks records and the new Del the Funky Homosapien , I'm somewhat indifferent about this week's releases. That, and I refuse to spell Tune-Yards all 1996 Yahoo chat schizo case style. I keep perusing the list, waiting for something else to jump out at me - but to no avail. What am I overlooking? :: Allen Toussaint - The Lost Sessions :: American Babies - Flawed Logic :: [...]
Whether you're a tri-corner hat wearing Teabagger who thinks taxes are the work of the devil, a bleeding heart tree-hugging Lefty who believes The Man will take care of everything, or a corporate cocksucking conservative who believes GE deserves a $3.2 billion tax refund despite raking in more than $14 million in profit, today [...]
The Kinks Part 2. Ray Davies and The Kinks were never ones to hang around and repeat themselves. Or at least they weren't in the 60s. By the time they were dabbling with Indian musical ideas and drones in early 1965 (see ABON 0167 ), they'd only been around for 18 months but had already invented Heavy Rock, got bored with it, after just two singles and moved on, leaving that genre for others to explore. And explore. And explore. They'd started out, like most of their peers in the early, [...]
The first three landmark albums from the Kinks—Kinks (1964), Kinda Kinks and The Kink Kontroversy (both 1965)—will be released as two-disc deluxe editions via UMe on Tuesday, featuring rarities, single versions, BBC sessions and more … The late Jay Reatard's 1998 debut, Teenage Hate, is being reissued by Goner Records on May 31 as a [...]
All set for Lolapalooza. I mean, the band already has the same haircuts right? I can picture the screams when Grace sings "I'd never ever kissed a woman before".
Filed under: The Hit List Ben Franklin once said that two things in life are certain: death and taxes. But as long as there are taxes, you can also count on complaints about taxes. And as long [...]

William Shatner has revealed some details on his forthcoming album. The acclaimed actor and musician's new LP is set to be titled Searching For Major Tom and will feature 19 cameo
HAL were featured on Obscure Sound over five years ago. They were under-exposed then, and remain so now. That HAL have not released anything in seven years certainly didn't help. Nonetheless, I listened to their eponymous debut very often for several years without tiring of it. Its swirling mixture of Beach Boys-inspired west-coast pop and [...]
On Monday, Rolling Stone sparked excitement amongst Kinks fans, stating that a reunion looks promising as both Ray and Dave Davies have now mentioned publicly that they would be open reforming. The article mentions a meeting of the minds next week to discuss the possibility. While a potential Kinks reunion always gets filed in the "we'll believe it when we see it" category, this at least gives us an excuse to air a classic video. Here's a brassy rendition of Village Green Preservation Society from 1973...

In March 2011, The Kinks released deluxe versions of their first three albums as part of a reissue campaign that will cover the bands first seven albums. The Kinks, Kinda Kinks , and Kink Kontroversy are now available in two disc deluxe format, featuring a plethora of singles, demos, outtakes, and BBC sessions from the bands catalogue. When discussing The Kinks catalogue, its no hidden secret that the master tapes from early Kinks recordings were not well looked after, they were often times destroyed, lost, or recorded over by Pye in the 80s, their record label. Unlike [...]
Filed under: News Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images The chances of a Kinks reunion have increased significantly after Ray Davies revealed he's set to meet his brother next week to discuss the possibility of getting back together. Last month Spinner reported guitarist Dave Davies was open to a reunion but it was ultimately "down to Ray." However, given he also labelled his brother a "vain, egocentric, narcissistic a---hole," it's [...]
Back in the 60s when the single was king, before the cult of the LP, groups that wanted to become famous - really famous - needed to be able to conjure from somewhere what, by today's standards, would be considered an enormous amount of hit singles. In hindsight it's amazing how many groups managed to pull off the trick. The Kinks were one of these ultra-prolific groups. During the first 23 months of their recording career - between February 1964 and December 1965 - they released ten singles. And two albums for good measure. The original Kinks were Ray Davies, his younger [...]

Trentemollers career is rather baffling, straying from anything considered slightly commercial he has one of the strongest gatherings of cult fans globally. Having only entranced the electronic scene in 2006 with his debut album 'The Last Resort' the dane has a peculiar taste of a much darker type of music viaing for down tempo drums, orchestral movements and minimal melodies which has only aided his success at being something geniunly unique. 'Shades of Marble' is from his sophomore album 'Into the Great Wide Yonder' and has been tickled by the likes of KINK , [...]
