The year 1991 marked a significant change in the sound of pop music. The days of bubblegum (Debbie Gibson, Rick Astley, New Kids On The Block) and hair metal (Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue) were suddenly numbered as alternative rock and grunge culture bubbled up to the surface and heavily infiltrated the mainstream. Perhaps sensing the turning tide, veteran acts like U2 and Michael Jackson headed in new directions, musically. Meanwhile, R&B was all about new jack swing, Motownphilly and a whistle-register songbird named Mariah. Cover versions, like remixes, are tricky beasts. If you're going to attempt one, you have to do something different from the original. You either have to turn everything up to 11 to make it a souped up version, like Fatboy Slim's remix of Brimful of Asha, or you have to make it identifiably your own, like Johnny Cash's version of Hurt . This is without doubt my all time favourite album to chill out to. The 1990 ambient concept album by The KLF tells the story of a journey along the gulf cost of the USA. Its one continuous piece of music and contains samples from the likes of Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Acker Bilk and Tuvan throat singers. Made with a limited amount of equipment and rumored to be done with the help of Alex Patterson of The Orb , it appears in many lists for one of the greatest ambient works ever made. [...]

There is a new band doing the rounds on the A&R circuit, called Wu Lyf. They've been known about for a while but have been keeping things super-mysterious, only playing in one venue, had a brilliantly useless myspace page (before Murdoch went and ruined the site even more) and only recently played their first London gig.
