Of all the Area Codes we've done so far, Denver is the biggest city, so it's probably not a surprise that it has one of the richer histories of anything in the series. Before the jam band craze of the early-to-mid '90s, Denver was long established as a friendly, scenic city conducive to folk acts (Judy Collins and John Denver) as well as jazz (Bill Frisell grew up there and Ron Miles is a mainstay). Now, the scene is kaleidoscopic and prolific, its components ranging from forward-thinking house music to exploratory psych-rock to jam to extremely left-field [...]

Hardly Art's , the Moondoggies , have been truckin' around in support of their last album, "Tidelands," for the last year or so and they'll be here in Denver tonight at Hi-Dive . C=T would love to send a lucky reader and a guest to their show tonight with a vinyl copy of "Tidelands" and a Field Notes prizeback. All you have to do is send me your name on Twitter @ Causeequalstime or email (julio.enriquez@gmail.com) and the tickets and prize pack are all yours. Good luck! So we're still aiming to re-post all of the Blogophilia volumes by summer's end. Today we have volumes 5 & 6, which feature promotional MP3s available during May and June of 2009. As always, these are gapless mixes with cover art. These are only up for a limited time, so get them now! - [...]

As an added bonus, I have their 73 "Before it Ends" and a t-shirt to giveaway to one lucky [...]

The weather gods have looked upon us and have taken mercy. I looked at the upcoming forecast and this weekend is suppose to be in the 802s and slight chance of showers. Nobody likes to wander around in the sweltering heat, especially when you're half in the bag or extremely elevated. But the meteorologists here in town are 50/50 on everything. So we shall see. The two-day festival kicks off this Saturday and it promises to have a lil' somethin' for everybody. Enjoy this Mile High Music Festival Mixtape to get you in the mood for the [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler will offer a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. Sunglasses "Stand Fast" from the Sunglasses EP [ released 6/15 | experimental-pop ] [ download [...]
There are several reasons that The Knew have made their way back to the bakery to be featured in this segment of Old Friends New Tunes. For those who appreciate lists, go nuts.. 1. The Knew have released a new album, The Knew's Pulperia and my ears are extremely pleased with me as the album has been on repeat [...]

The Denver Post ran a story last month detailing the work of a very cool ongoing study about the city's high " Creative Vitality Index ," which measures economic factors related to the music community. Through a series of qualitative interviews (I got to wax lyrical a few months ago over mimosas; it's how we do research here) and analysis of quantitative data, they discovered that music matters in Denver — "even more than it does in self-declared music cities like Seattle, Austin, Chicago and Portland." According to the study, the amount spent per person on [...]

The stars were aligned perfectly for the Knew's CD release party of their newest album, "Pulpería". The faith in rock and roll that I had lost for quite some time was restored and the sloppy bar band I was expecting to melt collective faces still melted all parties involved, but one funny thing happened at the show. The Knew sounded cohesive in ways that I didn't anticipate for them to unleash their new material. I was expecting a rollicking , knee-slapping time, and that's what we got. But in a way where the lead [...]

There was a time when rock music didn't sound so tame. A time when crowds were rowdy and riots were incited by barbarian frontmen that would take chugs of Jack between dirty guitar riffs and smoked cigarettes. These same bands would play behind chicken wire and have multiple fights breakout mid-song. You would find women with multiple tats littering around the front of the venue waving their bra in midair to gain the attention of any willing member on stage. There were no apologies back then. Denver's rock titans, the Knew , have created [...]

The kids up at CU have much to be happy with these days. Their football team has rid themselves of the dwarfed midget aka as CoHawk in favor of the more talented and less vertically challenged, Tyler Hansen. Maybe the Buffs can get a win for their Homecoming concert being played by Tapes 'N Tapes and the Knew. Tapes 'N Tapes-Insistor [mp3] The Knew-Salvazar [mp3] Program Council Presents Tapes 'N Tapes w/ The Knew [...]

The Knew is Denver's own facemelting alt country rockers who are, pretty much, Denver's best band.Charging rhythms and blazing guitars held together by a rhythm section that is essentially a runaway freight train, save for the out of control part. The Knew - By Yourself
I don't get a lot of opportunity to watch TV when it's actually on TV. With the exception of live sports events, most of the stuff I watch is way after the fact. I have a DVR full of stand-up comedy specials and old Discovery Channel shows that I will probably never watch. If I'm lucky, I'll catch an episode of Family Guy or The Daily Show online a week or two after it airs. Also, I will admit to being a complete nerd for Battlestar Galactica . I've got the second disc from season 4 siting on top [...]
Oh, so you want to know which bands I'm most excited to see? No. Well fuck you. This ain't your blog is it? Go write your own preview. As for me, I will be enjoying the company of the Donnybrook elite at the following shows: Saturday I'm very interested in seeing DANIELLE ATE THE SANDWICH because I missed her at the UMS . Of course GREGORY ALAN ISAKOV is a local must see and I've heard great things about local band SPEAKEASY TIGER so I'll [...]
The Antlers - Kettering Tigercity - Are You Sensation? Cotton Jones - Home Is Where The Pirate Signal ( myspace ) Lydia - This is Twice Now Neon Indian - Should Have Taken Acid With You The Knew - By Yourself Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream The Lonely Forest - We Sing in Time
What is the UMS you ask? Well that's a silly question. Many have called the Denver Post Underground Music Showcase the "South by Southwest of Denver." Originally a one day, four band gig at the Bluebird, this showcase has bounced between Bluebird and Gothic before finally moving (and exanding) to South Broadway in the historic Baker district. Otherwise known as the hipster herding grounds. Excerpted directly from the UMS About page: "At the UMS , the presentation of the music is as important as the music itself. It's the songwriter circle in the Persian rug boutique; [...]
It took a little while - ok, it took forever! - but the organizers behind the grandest indie extravaganza in the land, aka the Monolith Music Festival , have finally completed the 2009 lineup. Monolith's third edition will again take place at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado from September 12-13 and feature quite the indie-centric line up we've all come to expect and enjoy. Saturday is highlighted by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Girl Talk, Of Montreal, M. Ward, The Walkmen, Frightened Rabbit, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, while Sunday offers The Mars Volta, [...]
In a moment of cutting journalistic integrity, Angora Holly Polo suddenly spewed forth factual information from said music fest so as to enlighten the general truthiness of the universe. Here are twelve things, prioritized by coolness, which probably happened at the Westword Music Festival this last Saturday: 12.) Ethan, lead singer of Gangcharger, kept getting electrocuted in the mouth during his set at Sutra. Somehow the mic kept sneakily sending jolts of electricity into his face while he continued to rock in legendary fashion, without Angora Holly Polo's even observing the [...]
