Click here to view the embedded video. Treehouse booker and reliable dude Kyle Sowash just posted this on The Treehouse's Facebook group page : Treehouse patrons: On Friday, I resigned as the booking contact for the Treehouse for the past 2.5 years due to some really terrible things going on behind the scenes. As a result (of the terrible things happening behind the scenes, not me quitting), I got word on Saturday night that the bar is closed indefinitely. It's a long, sad story I'll [...]

MP3: The Kyle Sowashes - Magic Tricks The Kyle Sowashes - the local band whose everyman charm and killer hooks only a robot could resist - have a new three-song 73 out called Wreck , and the release show is Saturday night at the Summit. Info on that and lots of other shows below. As usual, feel free to fill it out with more shows and relevant details in the comments. You can also quickly access any "This Week" post by floating your mouse over the "Columbus" tab up top. [...]
...one of the busiest little groups in Dayton these days, The Motel Beds just keep coming up with new ways to blow our minds. Earlier this week, the band unleashed yet another stunning music video, this time for the title track of their stellar new album Sunfried Dreams, and in our humble opinion, it's the [...]

If 2009 was the year of Larry Jon Wilson, 2010 was the year of Bill Fox and the Gibson Bros. I think I listened to Bill Fox's two reissued albums - Shelter from the Smoke and Transit Byzantium - more than anything else. ( Shelter got a deluxe vinyl reissue, and Scat promises a similar treatment for Transit in 2011.) Go get 'em . And working on a story about the Gibson Bros. reunion show back in July occupied my brainspace and held my interest for months. I [...]

If you haven't already poked around Bandcamp , you definitely should. Tons of really great bands putting their music out there for you to download either for free or for a small fee. I was searching for bands that referenced Fig Dish when I came upon New Jersey's Brick Mower . This trio, in spirit anyways, reminds me of locals The Kyle Sowashes and SPD GVNR in that they sound like stuff I was listening to and [...]
Had I not stumbled upon Matthew Berlyant's review of the debut double 73 by forgetters on The Big Takeover website last week, I probably would have missed this show. As it was, the mere mention of a new band featured ex- Jawbreaker / Jets to Brazil singer/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach was enough to make me fire up Google and find out anything and everything I could about forgetters (no "the" and lowercase "f", thank you very much). There's not a lot out there, but I did find some [...]

MP3 : Blast From the Past People who know Kyle Sowash of The Kyle Sowashes know that he is a genuide solid dude. Between making records and booking bands in Columbus, he is one of the few people in town that is keeping Columbus a good place for live music on both a local and national level. Anyway Records just released their latest album, Nobdy , and it's some of the band's work. Fans of early Pavement, Superchunk and Archers of Loaf definitely want to get to know [...]

Jason Quicksall has been hosting the Cowtown Round on Monday nights at Rumba for a while now. It's basically three songwriters on stage together trading songs. This Memorial Day lineup sounds especially good to me: Sean Gardner (Winter Makes Sailors, Melty Melty, Bookmobile, Sowashes blah blah blah), Kyle Sowash ( new record! ) and Josh Rea from Wing & Tusk . (And if you go, wish Sean a happy birthday.)

MP3: Smug Brothers - Low Like Nothing MP3: Smug Brothers - Build Your Collections All three locals on this bill would be worth venturing out to see separately, so seeing the Kyle Sowashes , Ghost Shirt and Bicentennial Bear play a free show together at Carabar is a no-brainer (esp. if part 1 of Lost Weekend's two-night anniversary extravaganza isn't your thing). Icing on the cake is Dayton's Smug Brothers , fronted by Kyle Melton and featuring Don [...]

Photography by Tsuru Prints available here Happy Monday to you, my friends! How was your weekend? Mine? Well thanks for asking... it was jim-fucking-dandy! Saturday was the AGORA Art Show and Festival , I had a piece in the show & volunteered for a few hours, and Baby had a booth selling her amazing designs , lots of great art, designs, music (more on that later this week), and, of course, food! We were there all day and had one hell of a time. [...]
With four bands on a bill, it's more than likely one of them is going to be a dud, or at least have an off night. But the Treehouse was four for four on Friday night. The main event was the release of Athens, Ohio's Southeast Engine newest offering, From the Forest to the Sea . As I mentioned last week, it's a record full of spiritual yearning and self-condemnation, and it's also one of the best albums released so far this year. What struck me most about Southeast Engine's indie-folk live is how well [...]

Marco Benevento (photo by Greg Aiello) Yessir, it's been another year, and one that boasted its fair share of fair jams. Therefore, I have made my annual stab at a list of favorites. Despite any misgivings, I think I have assembled a list of albums that hit me in the right spot at the right time in order to merit a place in my heart. Please enjoy. Also, please note that following my Top 15 is a list of my 10 favorite Columbus records of 2008. Our humble burg cranked out a triumphant pile [...]

It's a surprisingly busy Sunday in Columbus for great music. If you play your cards right, you might be able to hit all three of these events because of their varied start times. EARLIEST Over at Used Kids, The Cusacks are reissuing their 2002 album More Songs From Vagabondia . It's remixed, remastered, and there's new packaging. Kyle Sowash and Super Desserts are also playing this free show that'll have free pizza too. This starts at 5pm. Full details here . Here's some Cusacks [...]
" You think they'll get this one? Think they'll get it? A little clue: check you calendar. Check your calendar on this one. Check your calendar, and then maybe you'll get the joke." - Tom, dropping some hints about his timely spin of "Taxman" "Oh, there's many more things I've done, but, you know, I figured I'd start with that." -- Leon Carbone, purging the guilt about a $20 paper route theft "Not even gonna say what it's a stain of, just trust me. It was gross." -- Tom, declining [...]

The Kyle Sowashes "Only Time Will Tell" (mp3) from "Yeah Buddy!" (We Want Action) Hailing from Columbus, OH (just across I-70 from me) and released by Columbus's own We Want Action Records; Kyle Sowash and his band create quirky bubblegum-pop indie rock for fans of early 90's bands such as Pavement, Superchunk and Guided By Voices. Check out the mp3 of "Only Time Will Tell", I posted and go to http://kylesowash.com/ to download some more tracks. Support [...]

MP3 Cutout Bin MP3 Korea With the exception of the forthcoming debut by Lydia Loveless , there isn't another local release that I've been anticipating more than The Kyle Sowashes ' Yeah Buddy . I was tempted to call Kyle the "everyman of Columbus indie rock" - he plays the part perfectly, from the look (scruffy beard, glasses) to the sounds he creates (think 1991 Chapel Hill, North Carolina). But Kyle is anything but the everyman. Guys like Kyle aren't truly [...]

Any band that names their album Yeah Buddy! automatically gets a thumbs up in our book. So what else do you need to know about the Colubmus, OH outfit known as The Kyle Sowashes ? First off, there is someone in the band actually named Kyle Sowash , (he plays guitar and sings). Secondly, their musical style is a fun romp through the golden age of indie rock. An age that may have ended about 13 years ago, but the band's had too much fun with it that no one's ever bothered to [...]
