The Muppets win at everything. That's all I have to say on the matter. In other news, Mrs. Toad and I went out into the garden this weekend, to try and tackle the small jungle which has slowly been developing since the Summer. The weather has been so spectacularly shit since July and August that we just haven't been out there, so our window boxes have all died and every bed was overrun with weeds. Still, due to our particularly indelicate methods of gardening - a little closer to slash and burn than anything you might [...]

I really don't like these lists very much. It is pretty much impossible to say who will have a good year, who will plod along as usual, who will split up or vanish without a trace, or anything else. It's also hard to say what counts as having a good year. Playing to a wee tent at at festival? A "triumphant" sell out gig to about 150 people in Glasgow or Edinburgh? The whole exercise always seems a tad pointless to me, you'd be better off sticking some band names on the wall and throwing darts to select them. That [...]

The Twilight Sad Kilsyth's finest sons are all set to release their much anticipated third album (proper), No One Can Ever Know, next month. Having heard the album I reckon it's going to take a lot of folk by surprise with the new direction they've taken. As a wee teaser of what to expect, you can download Another Bed from it for free via both the Skinny and Spin . Aloha Tigers! My good friend Ian, who used to run the blog Have Fun At Dinner has set [...]
Three days in and already we have our first repeat song. Sorry. I have a reason though! That reason is that by posting The Last Battle today I can elegantly work in a plug for the gig they are playing at tonight. With PET having to pull out of the Beard of Truth Heavy Pop Xmas Party The Last Battle have stepped in to the breach. They'll be playing tonight (Saturday) at The Wee Red Bar, with The Spook School and Calypso Brown. Also, The Last Battle came and did a [...]

So, this week ends with a massive extravaganza of Toadliness, but it does look like it'll be relatively quiet along the way as there doesn't seem to be that much else around until the weekend. Which is actually alright, sort of, because it gives me a chance to get my shit together in advance of a very busy weekend indeed. Quite how we're going to sort the logistics of getting half the bands in Edinburgh to and from Anstruther on Sunday I don't know, but I am sure we'll manage somehow. Anyhow, in the meantime there [...]

Apart from the gig stuff happening this week, I will be on this panel in Glasgow tomorrow. It is about the use of social media in music, and although I am not entirely certain quite how qualified I am to give actual advice, I do notice for example that our social media-based stuff for the record label tend to yield a lot more interest than our mailing list, so I guess there are a few things to talk about. And then on Saturday we'll be recording a Toad Session with the truly awesome PAWS. Quite how [...]

Holy fuck a McMoly, time certainly does fly in doesn't! Was it really way back in May that we announced that myself and Ayetunes were going to putting on another one of our 'leg-end-ary' gigs together. I guess that time has a certain way of creeping up on you, as in less than a week away we'll be taking over Stereo for our fourth 'vs' gig and desperately pretending that we're proper promoters and that we know what we're doing (usually the bands see us right!). In case you'd forgotten the line up it looks [...]

I know I keep moaning about how tired I am, today I have done relatively little but I still feel whacked. Please take this into consideration if you start to think that this post is a bit of ramble... This week sees innovative arts facility, Platform celebrating their 5th birthday, in the next few weeks they have a series of special gigs lined up. Based out in Easterhouse in the East End of Glasgow, Platform will be hosting Ethiopian, Mulatu Astatke on the 30th June, were he will [...]

Another week, another bank holiday in which we self-employed folks don't get to indulge. Working for yourself is great, but watching everyone else get days off when all you can do is stare at the steady trickle into your inbox and the pile of promotional copies of releases waiting to be posted, can be a little demoralising. And it's sunny, too. Fuckers. Anyhow, The Brainlove Festival was bloody good fun, only slightly ruined by an awful football match. My personal highlight was an absolutely awesome set by Mat Riviere. He was playing with a cellist whose name I [...]

This is the post-Homegame, 'dear Jesus please just let me sleep for a week, good god someone please fetch me a green vegetable' podcast. I can just about keep my head together enough to get through this, but then I have the Monday listings to write and the bloody Francois/This is the Kit/Babe gig to organise tonight as well. Aargh! I also have all sorts of other things to do this week, but after the sort of mind-boggling battering your mind and your liver get at Homegame I am not sure I can face [...]

Mrs. Toad's Lettuce The above picture shows how our veggie patch is doing, for those of you who give a flying fuck, which admittedly might not be many of you. Sunday was spent lying about in the garden reading books, which was nice and relaxing after getting pished late into the night with Monster Island, These Single Spies and Kid Canaveral after the Henry's gig on Saturday night. This Saturday we will be collecting for the RNLI in Stockbridge, so if you want to help out please do get in touch as we will [...]

I know that I posted a link to download this song in yesterdays Friday Freebies, but as I am sure that it would have passed a number of you by I thought I'd post it again today, just in case you missed it. Earlier in the week legendary hip-hop artist, Nate Dogg, passed away. I am not going to bullshit you and pretend that I was a massive fan or anything like that, but it does make me sad when folk die young. As a wee tribute, Edinburgh's finest, The Last Battle have posted up their cover of 'Regulate', it's [...]

TV On The Radio Brooklyn's finest release their new album 'Nine Types Of Light' next month, having blown me away with their last album 'Dear Science', I must admit to being just a little bit excited about this one. They're currently giving away new song " Caffeinated Consciousness " in exchange for your email address. PAWS Having blown several folk away at their EP launch a few weeks back, those awesome PAWS boys have posted up a live bootleg of a show they last year at Stereo in Glasgow. As [...]

The thing I hate the most about Satnavs is that although they do find wherever it is you're going, but you tend to have absolutely no idea how you got there. So you are no less lost, in a sense, you just happen to be in the right place. Well, I am getting a bit like that with my calendar. I write so much in my calendar that I tend to assume I put everything in it, which I don't. The only problem with this is that I make no effort to memorise appointments or events anymore, assuming [...]

Oh my aching face. This week there will be a total embargo on Fun of any sort, I think, to make up for the last seven days of fairly epic drinking. Fortunately, it isn't an overwhelmingly busy week, so I think I should be able to spend most of it at home with a cup of tea, nursing my whimpering liver. The Ides of Toad night was absolutely amazing on Saturday. Even with Loch Lomond sneakily squeezed onto the bill, we managed to get all four bands on and off the stage to play roughly half hour [...]

I had an awesome week of live music last week, from the Dylan Uncovered on Thursday (from which there is some recorded audio of Esperi and Yusuf Azak's sets here ), to Ringo Deathstarr on Friday and finally Conquering Animal Sound on Saturday. This week promises to be a little more spread out, but nevertheless just as good. As well as the return of the Ides of Toad gigs on Saturday (with an ear-carressingly excellent lineup, I might add) we will be recording a Toad Session with Armellodie Records ' Thirty Pounds of Bone . [...]

The Son(s) In case you missed our big Olive Grove announcement last week, we're going to be releasing their debut album in March. As a wee teaser of what you can expect from the album, you can now download a new version of ' Dogs, Boys & Men ' over on Soundcloud. I genuinely think we have one of the albums of 2011, if you don't believe me, then go and give the song a listen. You won't regret it. Bright Eyes If like me you were one of the unlucky [...]
