We're braving it alone this week, the wee one, the elderchild and me. And though this meant an especially sniffly, snuggly Monday night, happily, the four stages of grief have passed quickly in such intense, obvious circumstances, leaving us accepting, if not yet perfectly balanced in our adoption of the adapted dance that is life with Daddy. If I'm nervous but grateful for the chance to try, it's in no small part because my time with the kids is too often stolen from Mama's world. From the moment we find ourselves on the [...]
With the Buzzcocks, Pete Shelley wrote some of the best pop-punk songs ever. We're celebrating his birthday by showcasing some of these songs in the hands of other artists.

It's been a long while since I've posted any covers, but Bishop Allen side-project The Last Names playing Harry Nilsson's "Me and My Arrow" (from the animated film The Point! ) is something I couldn't resist. The sweetly melodic, playful tune is a perfect match for the indie pop duo and Darbie Nowatka does a lovely job on lead vocals. The band is covering a new track every week this year, which so far, has included cuts from New Order, The Monkees, Buzzcocks and Dire Straits. Cool! Thanks to [...]
The Bishop Allen-offshoot Last Names just posted another weekly cover that's close to my heart. This week the duo offered up a take on Harry Nilsson's "Me and My Arrow" from The Point. MP3: the Last Names - Me and My Arrow (Harry Nilsson) Snag more covers at the Last Names' Tumblr

I can't remember the last time I posted about Brooklyn-based band Bishop Allen in these pages, but I certainly remember the first time, because it was the very first post I ever made on QBiM . Back then, I was enamoured with their year-long EP-A-Month project, and "The Monitor" (from the March EP) was one of the songs that inspired me to start blogging. Things are a bit quiet at the Bishop Allen camp right now, but band members Justin Rice and Darbie Nowatka have left the city and fled to upstate new York, set [...]

The Last Names - "One Black Feather" 43-year-old teenager. After a shower, May lay steaming on the bed. The bed with the long-empty passenger seat, covers heaped in a twisted pile. She tapped through pictures of friends' families, their time magnets, their love wells. She read insincerity on the smiles of some, honesty on the goofy mugs of others. A goofy face was an honest face, if a tragic kind of twisted honesty. Like when you catch your face in two mirrors and it looks all lopsided. She waited for Edmund and [...]
Justin from Bishop Allen has started a new project with his wife, Darbie Nowatka. You might remember her beautiful voice from one of Bishop Allen's most popular songs, "Butterfly Nets." So yeah, this is a team-up that I can get behind 100%. MP3: The Last Names - The Dirt MP3: The Last Names - Dead [...]
