Upbeat indie pop from London, Laurel Collective is groovy, noisy, and uber-cool. They signed with an offshoot of Domino Records, Double Six, in their infancy. A sensational introduction to the band with "They Hate Me," I'm dying to see what these guys come up with on their upcoming debut via Tape Club/Believe. Aside from working on their own music, they also do their part to foster the indie scene. Mixed genre nights are always a good opportunity to catch new bands and see what the latest buzz is all about. It's also good, solid proof that hype vs. reality is always a tough hurdle to jump. Laurel Collective's buzz was quite a tall one. The night started okay. Love For Zero have their sound defined, but it doesn't change much during their set (except for the final two tracks). To be fair the band has changed its line-up so much, and maybe they're finally finding their signature sound. [...]

You know what it's like when you hear a cracking track, but for some reason, you just can't find it anywhere? ANYWHERE. If you combine the fact that these guys used to run a festival (In The Woods) with their sporadic music releases over the past few years, the only logical conclusion is that Laurel Collective aren't your typical indie band. However, with their forthcoming debut album Heartbeat Underground on the horizon, as well as their new single 'They Hate Me' coming March 19th, it seems the band are finally on the path they needed to be on. Screw genres. That seems to be the mindset of The Laurel Collective , a London sixpiece who veer from blues to soul to electronica to rock with all the consistently of a drunken high-heeled preteen waltzing around Leicester Square. A bohemian spirit and experimental enthusiasm are probably to blame - or rather, to thank. The only constant is a general good-time-ness - visible amid the down-tempo keyboard murkiness and guttural vocals of Cruel Thing, the screechy hooks of Jelly Bird and definitely the chantable rock-funk of Vuitton Blues.
