I'm very inspired everyday by the things I see around me in our culture. Sometimes it seems like its all bad-all the time. A popular story right now is that the Parents Television Council is unhappy with Rihanna 's potrayal of a rape victim turned murderess in her new video for "Man Down". While it is great that there is an organization in place to protect our young ones from negative imagery, at what point do we as women take responsibility for the next generation in our own communities? Teenagers need to be active and involved to [...]

It was a few weeks ago that I first heard The Leadership's excellent debut Frontiers . I was scouring my iTunes library, submissions from bands/publicists and other music blogs to find new tunes for the Spring Mixtape when I somehow found myself on the band's bandcamp page. Opening track "Keep The Change" earned a spot on the mix, and the whole album has been in heavy rotation ever since. "Keep The Change" starts as a subdued shuffle before a wave of distorted guitars enter for the chorus and Jonathon Childers' voice rises to [...]
The ground is starting to thaw and the air is getting back that moist smell of mud and life. Spring is (almost) here. We made it. Now here are some tunes to help you shake off the lingering effects of hibernation... My music listening habits tend to follow seasonal trends and, true to form, in Spring my musical palette expands to embrace the vibrancy of the season. Lush pop sounds and grand statements are what I gravitate towards, and you'll see that reflected in the Spring Mixtape. Following the arc of spring, Side [...]
I'm going to jump on the mini bandwagon for the Urbana based band The Leadership . The reasons are that they are semi-local for me (at least they're from Illinois), they play straight up rock with an edge, and they're not afraid to mess with convention. Most notably in the song "Bring It Back" from the new album Frontiers , in that song and others, errant noise plays a surprisingly large role. Word is the band is pretty great live and aside from their own upcoming shows they will soon be opening for Margot and [...]

Brookly based duo, Warm Ghost , has been blowing up the interwebs for the last 24 hours with the release of the "Open the Wormhole in your Heart" MP3 and corresponding video yesterday. Paul Duncan and Oliver Chapoy have worked with a few of our favorite musicians, including Joe Stickney of Bear in Heaven, among others. This track essentially blends the popular modes of 80's inspired electronic haze and vocal delivery. It's hard to argue how catchy and ambient this track is, and the positive bonus is that it remains accessible and [...]
Urbana (IL) band The Leadership go for a vintage garage rock sound. Keyboards osunding like a purring river, lots of echo on the guitar and sligthly hoarse vocals. Their album Frontiers is as not very 21st Century, but it will go down with the denim-clad dudes who still go out to see shows and buy albums. Singer Jonathon Childers has come up with a collection of songs that channel the band's musical hereos (Led Zep, The Band). The Leadership is not a neo-classic rock outfit per se, but they go [...]
Here is a little impromptu mixtape of stuff that I have been listening to heavily lately. There is definitely an alternative country theme here. I did include some upcoming tunes, Tennis and Yuck. If you like some of the stuff, go check them out on Bandcamp , because some of the stuff I found as a free download there. Enjoy this weekend. ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________ DOWNLOAD No Rhyme, No Reason HERE ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________ 1] Adam's House Cat - Nine Bullets [...]
The Leadership I came across this yesterday and was sold after listening to the first song. After such a strong start I was skeptical to continue through this, but found it to be a strong and thorough album. This has the quality of a Drive-By Truckers album, true-to-heart stories, raging riffs, and a little twang. If you download anything today, let this be it. Straight out of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois comes a new talented band dubbed The Leadership. Their album Frontiers was written and recorded within a span of a couple of months in Jared Michael Park's basement with Jared and Jonathon Childers writing and performing just about everything. In doing so, they took extreme care to preserve the raw energy of the barroom rock. The album is energetic and pretty darn good. The best way for you to decied wheter they are really as good as I describe them is to give them a listen. Enjoy [...]
Check this album out. The Leadership is a new band out of Champaign featuring Jonathon Childers (of local Jon-A-Thon Childers fame) and Jared Michael Park (of Tall Tale) doing it all on just about every single aspect of the album. The two just finished this album up and (along with Zane Ranney on drums and Chris Jones on bass) played a pretty decent release show at The Canopy Club last Thursday. Its a good ol' rockin' time in my opinion (which is the only one that matters 'round these parts!) If you like the mp3s [...]

Big Heros Don't Solve Small Problems
Back when I was in commerce we'd watch a young executive making a play for relevance and import and say, "Big heros don't solve small problems." It's a version of the old "make a mountain out of a mole hill" idea, but much more dangerous if you let it get out of hand. On April 3 Eamon Javers at Politico reported on Obama's meeting with the nation's finance executives (Inside Obama's bank CEOs meeting) One could call it a staff meeting since everyone in the room now works for Obama. The description of the meeting went... [...]
