The old: This one's for Tim, who requested that I repost The Cat Empire's 'Days Like These'. As he says, they're a 'band you can't not love'. This one's a great summer sounding one Tim - enjoy. Days Like These - The Cat Empire The new: I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit that I like this song, but I've been hearing it on Triple J quite a bit here in Oz and when I saw the kooky film clip the other day I decided it was kinda alright after all. Norweigan [...]

Whenever a big gig comes to Philadelphia you can count on WXPN to let us all join in the fun. WXPN will simulcast this evening's My Morning Jacket show directly from the Festival Pier around 7:30PM. I know what I'm doing tonight. Let's take a look at what we missed this week... During the Olympics, Music Max hopped on the bandwagon, with their top 5000 Gold Medal Marathon countdown. We'll ignore the predictability of the whole exercise (you'll see what I mean when I list the top 10 later in this post) and we'll focus today on a song that broke in somewhere in the 200's, the formidable Annie Lennox and her 1992 hit 'Walking On Broken Glass'. I can't believe I'd never seen this video before. I bloody love it! It's got everything – lush medieval costumes and a great sense of fun, as well as a couple of cameos. John [...]

Here in Australia, a beastly battle rages. A plague of biblical proportions has beset our humble rural home in the last couple of months and we have been hard pressed to defend ourselves. I refer to the Huntsman spider. I am not going to include a picture here because they are less than attractive, but feel free to Wiki it later. I recommend that you do actually, so that you can fully appreciate the terror I feel whenever I (literally) stumble across these creepy crawlies. They are not your regular garden spider. They're big. They're hairy. And they're organized. [...]

Or so I thought. Just saw on their myspace that Fleet Foxes are heading to Oz December 29th! Woo hoo! They've been added to the Lorne Falls Festival lineup, which also includes The Kooks, Soko, Mystery Jets, The Cat Empire, Franz Ferdinand and more. Doubt very much that I'll get there, but my fingers are crossed that perhaps they'll play another gig or two once they've wrapped things up in Lorne. What a great way though to brighten this dreary day of hailstorms, heavy rain and winds that were actually strong enough to dismantle our mailbox. [...]

I've spoken before of my disappointment with Augie March. And now comes the final nail in the coffin. Here is a taste of their forthcoming album. I sincerely hope this isn't the lead single - if this is the best track, then I don't hold great hopes for the rest of the album. Can you listen to it all the way through without turning it off and sighing in despair? I can't. Watch Me Disappear - Augie March

One of the most talked about musicals of 2008 isn't even on Broadway...yet. The off-broadway dance musical Fela! is earning raves from anyone who attends. Just ask the NY Post or our friends at Intelligent Rectum about this brand-new show. Fela! tells the story of Fela Kuti's meteoric rise as a composer and performer and includes [...] One of the most talked about musicals of 2008 isn't even on Broadway...yet. Week: busy. Motivation: low. It's a sad fact that when you're having a tough week, even the activities you love become a chore. So no words of insight or interest here I'm afraid. Today we'll just have to let the tunes do the talking - more from recently discovered artists, and a favourite as well. If you haven't checked out the Motel Motel stuff yet, get to it - I bloody love em. Mexico - Motel Motel Virginia - Motel Motel In The Forest - [...]

Everything I right click seems to turn to gold these days. No Midnight Star to be found here though (thank goodness), just a selection of solid tracks that I've come across over the past couple of weeks. I begin with three tracks that definitely belong in my Song Titles Of A Quirky Persuasion collection. Adem is a Turkish-English musician based in London. I didn't realize this was a cover until I went digging, and since I have no familiarity with original artist Aphex Twin, despite the fact that he's got quite the Wiki write-up, [...]

Like Fleet Foxes, The Avett Brothers are a folk/rock outfit that I've never really 'got' before. I've heard great things about them on a multitude of blogs but I've never heard anything that convinced me to give them more than a cursory half-distracted listen. It was this review of a recent live gig that convinced me that they were worth another go. And it was 'Gimmeakiss' from their 2006 album Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions that made me thirsty for more. If anyone's looking for me, I'll be the one digging frantically through the depths [...]

When it comes to the Fleet Foxes, I'm a late developer. I heard a handful of tracks a few months ago, and I thought they were nice and everything, but nothing to get out of bed for. What a difference waking up to yourself makes. It took a few repeated listens before the gorgeous sound began to work its magic, but it's now seeped its way into my bones and I really don't know what the hell I was thinking. Most of you have probably figured out that this is wonderful stuff already, but for those of you who have just crawled out from that [...]

I've written about Shorpy before, but for those of you who aren't familiar, Shorpy is a blog that showcases old photos that give a glimpse into what life was like over 100 a years ago, with most photos from the USA. I find them endlessly fascinating and always worth a look-see. This is a far cry from my local docket-happy Safeway servo, where the last time I went I counted 18 cars ahead of me during my 15 minute wait just to get to the pump. I don't know why, [...]

I don't care if I'm lying Mr. Sheff, I just can't help myself. If this is a taste of what's to come, bring on September 9, I say! Pop Lie - Okkervil River

I think it's high time I pointed you all in the direction of some of the cool stuff I've come across lately during my blog explorations. Captain Obvious is the man behind one of my favourite daily reads. Not only does he regularly review new albums and introduce me to tons of stuff that I've never heard of, he also posts videos (that I can never watch properly thanks to my slow internet), reviews films and puts together the odd Covers Mixtape . And we all love a good cover now, don't we? This latest mixtape is [...]

I don't know what made me think of this song the other day, but for some reason, after not hearing it for years, I suddenly felt the urge to track it down. I thought 'The Lovecats' by The Cure was awesome when I was kid - I found it absolutely hysterical. We're so wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully Wonderfully pretty! Oh you know that I'd do anything for you... We should have each other to dinner huh? We should have each other with cream Listening to it after not hearing [...]

So, JC over at The Vinyl Villain is making a bit of a playlist for his mate Comrade Colin from And Before The First Kiss , who is shortly heading over to Paris for a weekend. What a nice fella! Why does this concern me, you ask? Well, JC is looking for French-themed tracks to chuck on an iPod for Colin to take with him on his trip and I happened to have a few to add to what is becoming a jolly handsome looking list. So here are the tracks I've managed [...]

Most people usually scratch their head when they find out that the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame calls Cleveland, Ohio it's home. Sure pioneering DJ Alan Freed got his start there, and the city claims to be have hosted the first rock and roll concert, but it's always seemed a bit perplexing to those [...] Most people usually scratch their head when they find out that the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame calls Cleveland, Ohio it's home. ...HAHAHA We Destroyed The Hopes And Dreams Of An Aussie Who Wanted To See Us Live. So Los Campesinos just emailed me personally (assuming of course that I'm the only one on their mailing list) to announce tour dates for the UK later on this year, and to inform me that they will also announce European dates soon. No love for my neck of the woods however, with Australia not even getting a sniff of a visit. I guess it's understandable - we are a hell of a long way from anywhere. To lessen the pain, Los Camp did attach a song that [...]

Damn, this is a gorgeous track. It's called 'Spaceships' and is by Patchwork, the recently cobbled-together project of Jeremiah Nelson. While I don't know a lot about him or his band yet, I do know that they have created one of the most soothing pieces of music I've come across in a long time (aside from Sigur Ros - I haven't forsaken you boys, I promise!). And I don't mean soothing in a wishy-washy chiropractor's waiting room kind of way, but it does makes me feel as if everything is going to be alright. The highlight for me, in addition to the fantastic vocals and beautiful instrumentation, is [...]

Was on the ninemsn website earlier and happened to notice this reader poll: Are you annoyed by the Olympic coverage on the television? Gee...you didn't happen to lose the bid to cover the Olympics did you Channel 9? Sour grapes anyone? If You Got The Money - Jamie T
