Michigan quintet Greensky Bluegrass welcomed Grateful Dead drummers Billy Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart - currently touring as the Rhythm Devils - to perform with them at last weekend's Hoxeyville Festival. The pair joined GB for a bluegrass-infused version of China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider. You can watch a clip of the action on YouTube . In other Greensky Bluegrass news, the band has announced that they will be ringing in the New Year at Cervantes' Other Side in Denver, CO on December 30 and 31. Tickets [...]
So - Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth. Is there a more distinctive voice out there? If so, I'm yet to hear it. It's unmistakable. I heard 'The Wild Hunt' for the first time just as I pulled into my driveway the other day, and found myself unable to exit the car until it was over. It's the type of song that messes me up - all wistful and hopeful, with a melody that just gets me , making me feel both happy and sad all at once. I love it. The Wild [...]
(image via myspace) Found something on It All Started that you missed first time round? I have no problems reposting stuff if you're a little late to the party! According to a quick hunt about the internets, this is not a legitimate prohibition poster, but rather a spoof from some early 19302s film that nobody seems to remember the name of. I like to believe that it's real though. It's just... so perfect. Had it been real, I'm sure it would've saved many a man from the evils of liquor - and resulted in more than a few broken hearts amongst those who found themselves unable to kick the habit. The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism - The New Pornographers [...]

Do you reckon they're sour worms in that bag? I hate those. Why the hell would you want to eat something sour when you could have milk bottles or licorice allsorts, chocolate frogs or peanut brittle? I just. Don't. Get it. Onto a more palatable mixed bag: once again I find myself with a stack of uploaded tunes that I've yet to find the time to write about. Time to clear the decks! Here's a random sample. Don't Taunt a Tiger - Slothbear | myspace [...]
The first time I heard 'Lungs Quicken', the latest from Lanterns On The Lake , I think I was busy doing other things and didn't give it enough attention - I certainly remember being less than impressed. I kinda knew I'd done it a bit of a disservice though, so this afternoon I cued it up again, drew the curtains and actually sat down to listen properly. Sure enough, I'd written it off too early - it's lovely. A slow burner, and as dreamy and as exquisite as always. I love the crackly intro and the strings. [...]

You may be aware that we're about to head to the polls again here in Oz. My vote is already well and truly decided and I have to tell you that I'm completely over the whole election campaign claptrap. Gruen Nation and their clever and humorous analysis of the many and varying political ads taking over our TVs is about the only thing keeping me sane. Personally, I think all of our political leaders should take a leaf out of E.V.B Sampson's book - check out his 1949 candidate introductory ad. His wife is a [...]

Lollapalooza is well underway at Grant Park in Chicago. If you've been following our man on the scene, Benji Feldheim's, twitter feed then you already knew that Jeff Tweedy sat in with Mavis Staples and her band during their set at the fest. Benji will be tweeting all weekend long and we'll post his long-form thoughts on the event throughout the weekend. Here's five other links we think you'll enjoy... (image via myspace ) I first mentioned Cloud Control a few weeks back , stating that their album Bliss Release was high on my shopping list due to all the great press it's received since its debut in May. Turns out the press is warranted - it's an absolute cracker of an album. Fantastic folk/pop vibe, with hand claps, vocal harmonies and heavy drums providing plenty of variety. Standout tracks include 'Meditation Song #2 (Why, Oh Why)', 'Gold Canary', 'This Is What I Said' and 'My Fear #22. An album best served LOUD. Get [...]

Brothers Brando and Dusty Rich started CashOrTrade.org last year to offer Phish fans a free place to buy, sell or trade tickets with like-minded fans. Since the site's inception in February of 2009 CashOrTrade.org has brokered over 10,000 transactions between those who have "embrace(d) the face." With the second leg of Phish's tour kicking off on Thursday we wanted to remind our readers of this incredible, free service. Let's take one last look at what's happening on the 'nets... I'm not familiar with any of David Vandervelde's work beyond his seriously gorgeous 2008 release Waiting For The Sunrise , and so my impression of his style tends to rest somewhere within the confines of this: Someone Like You - David Vandervelde | myspace So imagine my surprise when this little ditty popped up on my ipod during my Sunday morning stash session : Checkin' Out My Baby - David Vandervelde [...]

After being rumored for quite some time a biopic based on Grateful Dead singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia will finally be headed to the big screen . The movie, based on Robert Greenfield's Dark Star: An Oral Biography Of Jerry Garcia, will focus on Garcia's life before the Grateful Dead. According to Greenfield it will capture "the period when the guitarist was working in coffee shops and playing bluegrass, newly married with a young daughter." The untitled flick, which currently has a screenwriter and director, will next look to fill the [...]

There's this drive that I do on a fairly regular basis but for some reason I never take the exact same route. It's fairly open country and there are a couple of towns that I try to hit up on the way, and as long as I pass through them without diverting too much the drive usually takes around the same amount of time. Last weekend I found yet another new way to go and came across this tiny abandoned church. It was missing a front door and was completely empty inside save for a few scribblings [...]

This was meant to be a post about how much I love The Avett Brothers 2009 release I And Love And You but hours are slipping through my fingers like seconds today and I'm afraid the careful analysis just won't be happening. Just know that it's gorgeous and wistful and charming. If you don't own it, buy it. If you do own it, give it another spin. 'January Wedding' is my current favourite. Love. January Wedding - The Avett Brothers [...]

Live Nation held a meeting for the company's investors at Irving Plaza in which the company tried to allay shareholder's concerns about the sad state of the live music biz these days. One of the slides LN showed investors details the " anatomy of a concert ticket ." The general public may think that promoters make money hand over fist from $100+ tickets, but as you can see that's not usually the case. Talent demands ridiculous amounts of money from LN. Here's a quick look at six other stories of [...]

I came across Joseph Arthur a year or so ago I think, through another blog no doubt, although I can't for the life of me pinpoint which one. His song 'Speed Of Light' is what first caught my ear and whenever it pops up unexpectedly I always cease whatever I'm doing and listen, transfixed, until the song is over. It's such a wistful kind of song and every time I hear it I'm filled with sadness. Lots of music makes me feel sad, but it's usually a good kind of sad, if you know what I mean. It's hard to [...]
