Most of the new releases for this week dropped on the last day of last month, making January a pretty rad month for new releases after a relatively slow start (which is typical right after the holidays), and a great way to kick-off the 2012 music calendar. In case you missed any of IRC's Best [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Remember when Merge Records was synonymous with genre-defining indie rock and had a whole roster of bands whose albums you couldn't wait to get your hands on? Well, guess what? They still are, and do! The venerable Durham, North Carolina, label proves they're still up to their game with two releases this week in heavy rotation at KEXP. Bay Area veterans Imperial Teen return with their fifth album overall and their third on Merge, Feel the Sound , which, according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "continues to refine and expand upon their infectious blend of power-pop, [...]

There's a strong Beatles influence shuffling through this track from The Library is on Fire. It's called They Don't Know You (Like I Know You) and it's taken from the band's forthcoming album, Works on Paper , which is out on January 31. Have a listen to the song here: They Don't Know You (Like I Know You)

I was already in a bad mood. I was hungry. I'd been up since 6 a.m. And in fact, my arse was uncomfortably sweaty from the brisk walk I'd had to make to get to the show on time. And then I discover that The Library is on Fire are playing thirty minutes later than expected. I could have sauntered up. Not the end of the world. I sat to listen to a band I'd not researched or even been interested in seeing, I Am Giant . Initially I (very wrongly) gave them a quick [...]

The success of the best 90's best alt-rock, and by extension the success of today's best alt-rock revivalists, can be traced to two factors: Escapism and immediacy. These aren't the only two factors, mind you, but merely two forces which drive songs like The Library is On Fire's "Monkey in my Chair." Are they really singing about a monkey stealing some dude's chair when that dude got up to go to the fridge for a fresh beer? The bigger question is, does it matter? Why would you want to spend your time dissecting [...]

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes...
Ted Leo and The Pharmacists' latest full length, The Brutalist Bricks isn't due out on Matador Records for another three weeks, but the promos are out, and all early listening indicates this album may be Leo's best since his landmark release, Hearts of Oak. It's got the stories and travels, and the expressive songwriting you've come to expect from Leo. It also has a serious rhythmic kick. A kick which begins in earnest with side one, track one, "The Might Sparrow," and rarely relents throughout the course of 13 numbers. MP3: Ted Leo and The [...]
