Years ago, I posted some music from The Lickets' album Journey in Caldecott . I wrote how it was very good stuff, and how people shouldn't make the easy mistake of treating it as psychedelia. Needless to say, every time I heard the album after that, I could only hear the psych elements. Completely stabbed myself in my own foot there, but at least no-one else got to find out. Anyway, I've just got round to hearing some stuff from their 2009 album Her Name Came on Arrows , and for once I'm [...]
The way high-quality filming has met with music in recent years is really astonishing - take this video by art and design magazine The Black Harbour . One of Black Harbour's local collaborators Michael Jeter has done some great work on neighborhood subjects, including this beautiful live recording of San Francisco experimental folk group The Lickets . The Lickets - "Clairvoyant Perception of the Unseen Unicorn" The Lickets are performing during the early slot tonight at Amnesia (with [...]

San Francisco's renaissance folk ensemble The Lickets propose an interesting opportunity for a few dozen musicians - to perform Terry Riley's "In C" as a group on Nov. 16 at Cafe Du Nord . More about "In C," a composition of 53 phrases open to interpretation, from Wikipedia : In C is a semi-aleatoric musical piece composed by Terry Riley in 1964 for any number of people, although he suggests "a group of about 35 is desired if possible but smaller or larger groups will work." It [...]

The Hemlock changes its pace Tuesday with a bill of ethereal pysch-folk and ambient groups; and it's justifiable to abandon your Vashti records for an evening with The Lickets , Caroline Weeks (London) and Corridor (LA) (9pm, $7). The local headliners have just finished up two new records, Arrow of Expanding Light and Clairvoyant Perception of the Unseen Unicorn , reflecting Empyrean style folk sure to satisfy the followers of Vespers, Jana Hunter and so on. The Lickets - "Clairvoyant Perception of the [...]

Harvested the first of this season's tangerines today. They are so outrageously organically sweet & succulent, eating one is almost as good as eating some pussy. I said almost! They're like a burst of sunlight. Right now I'm also in the process of getting the winter crop fava beans in, I'm still working on their trellises. Favas (really a vetch, not a bean, but classified as a legume) loosen the soil about two feet down & draw nutrients from as deep as ten feet. Plus they fix about 200 pounds of nitrogen per acre (enough for the most demanding spring [...]
Say hello to your new favourite band. What a strange pair Mitch Greer and Rachel Smith make. I'd like to make a request here, if I might. Would it be possible, if just once I was able to read a review of the band that didn't describe them as psychedelic? Just once would be enough. I don't know who started it, but it isn't big, it isn't clever, and more to the point it isn't bloody accurate. It ends here. The Lickets never sound as if they're part of the world of [...]
