BLOODIEST | Photograph by Saverio Truglia Summer is in full swing and there are plenty of outdoor activities to satisfy your musical lust including two chances to picnic outside the Logan Square Monument and watch some sexy local rock provided by the likes of Rabble Rabble or Califone and Bloodiest . As if that could be enough, adrenaline-pumping indie rockers Les Savy Fav are in town. There's so much rock, we'll have to start a new pile. Let's get to it, shall we? [...]
Last week NOizefest came around, a bit of an annual local weirdo fuck you to the commercial behemoth which is the New Orleans Jazzfest. Unlike Yankee counterparts such as Neon Marshmallow Fest or the Ende Tymes Festival , this is more of a free for all everyone make a racket whenever they feel like it. There is a very loose sign up sheet with suggested times, but I really didn't see anyone stick to it, or for that matter stop playing so someone else could. Founded by the deceased Keith "Deacon Johnson" Moore, Michael [...]

We can now call Jay-Z an editor as today sees the launch of Life And Times , a website "curated' by the remarkable guy from Marcy. "As if being a rapper, clothing line creator and businessman weren't enough, Jay-Z (a.k.a. Shawn Corey Carter) is adding another job to his resume: editorial director. "Today, Jay-Z, along with his company SC | Enterprises, is launching a new lifestyle site called Life And Times, which covers everything from music to fashion to tech to sports. An idea that was born about one [...]
According to a recent interview on Crustcake's podcast, Doomriders and Sweet Cobra are teaming up to release a new Devo-themed 73. No, your eyes do not deceive you. I wrote "Devo-themed." Apparently, Doomriders will cover Devo's "Girl U Want," while Sweet Cobra will tackle the band's "Gates of Steel." I just went on YouTube to [...]

I hate doing this. Rounding up the year's best local releases only makes me think of failure. Not failure on the part of any artist, mind you -- well, not usually -- but rather failure on my part... Continue reading "Harper's Neurotic Local Top 20 and Whatever, Don't Get Excited" >
Clayton Brown was/is/has 1) Allen Epley's old college roommate, 2) the very first drummer in Shiner, 3) currently a film professor at Northwestern, 4) made all things video for TL&T. Add to his resume this gem for the track Old Souls from Tragic Boogie . The actor in the film/video is musician Jim Becker, who carries residences in Caliphone and Red Red Meat among others. The girl in the video is played by Kate Tummelson, about whom I don't have much info, other than she's beautiful. Keep in mind, the effects in this vid were created solely organically, old [...]

Ok, let's just get this out in the open: I am, unapologetically, one serious Allen Epley fanboy. A quick inventory of my iTunes library results in 105 tracks from Mr. Epley and his various accomplices. I have original releases, re-releases, imports, EPs, compilations, demos, bootlegs, t-shirts, stickers, ticket stubs, a DVD and a pick. I frequent a message board dedicated (at least, at this point, in name) to Shiner. I've road tripped thousands of miles over the past decade to see Shiner and The Life and Times at least a dozen times. Included in those trips [...]

So at this time, there is no news to put out there. That doesn't mean there won't be any later. But what are you going to do till then? You have to have something to fill the gap. Well with that said, I have made a mixtape of stuff I have been listening to over the last six months. Some of the music is new and some of it is old. But what a great day to spend the day. The Features - The Temporary Blues.mp3 [...]

I must apologize for the amount of time I spent transcribing this interview, but this found itself to be one of the most difficult transcriptions I have ever done and I contemplated not bothering. However, Little Brazil is a fantastic band and there were some really great answers provided in this interview that I couldn't allow it to just get buried. At this point, I'm sure you're wondering what happened. Little Brazil 's guitarist Greg Edds and I left the venue in search of a quiet spot to conduct [...]
If you haven't seen the trailer for 72 Musicians , you are missing a documentary that will show one of the most influential scenes since Chapel Hill and Seattle. Kansas City, MO has been one of the scenes that should and will be right there along side of them. I can talk to almost any of my musician friends and they can name one band they are influenced by if it is Appleseed Cast , Shiner or Coalesce . This documentary follows this band and tells their stories. I encourage everyone to check out this [...]

And I'm still playing catchup with all the great stuff that came out last week. Today, I post a new "beautiful and crushing" track from Chicago/LA instrooartmetal band Pelican . The new album comes out on Oct 27. It is entitled What We All Come To Need . While I had heard that the album would have a guest appearance from Earth's guitarist, it has been confirmed that the new album will have a bunch of guests including members of Isis , Sunn O))) , Harkonen , and the Life & Times [...]
EPIC FUCKING WEEK! Okay...here we go. I am going to be burnt out at the end of this week, it's inevitable. To kick it all off, I'll be seeing Mogwai tonight for the very first time. As a fan of theirs for years, this is going to be very special for me. I'd rank it up there with when I caught Sigur Ros for the first time last year. This may be equally as epic. Not many bands make me feel the way Mogwai does, so it's obvious that I have been [...]
