Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the good times? Are you ready for the birds and bees? The apple trees? And a whole lot of indie rock? Well you're in luck because that's what we have here with the first mix of Summer Fridays 2012.* I am hoping to do these every Friday, though I'm gainfully employed now (we don't get summer Fridays at my job, unfortunately) and have a lot less time - and energy - than I have the last four years. Which is good! Anyway, we'll see how I do. This kickoff mix [...]

The Limiñanas – (I've Got) Trouble In Mind

I fixed my tail light. It was a simple matter of checking the fuses, noting that the 8A fuse was blown, and swapping it out. Still having issues with the front indicator and running light, but thanks to the good folk at BMW 2002 FAQ, I should have it figured out in the near future. On to the show. Tonight's show was all about current favorites. I played a few tracks discovered within the last week, and several that have been in heavy rotation on my personal playlist of late. [...]

Today's entry has been rattling around my coconut for the last couple of months, I first heard it on a hung over Sunday morning whilst visiting some friends; the compilation playing had been put together by Hunter (Aged 3) and this was his favorite tune. Once back home my clouded vision impaired me of the track's vital information (I.E. who the track was by). Eventually the pieces fell into place and it turns out the tune had been loitering in my iTunes all along; The Limiñanas self titled debut came out in 2010 and you will undoubtedly hear [...]

I could've made this list twice as long but I capped it at 50. Most of these are actual singles. The rest should be. Beyond the top ten, ordering is fairly arbitrary. Metronomy - The Look ( MP3 | Video ) I first heard this song back in February and I have yet to tire of it. I wish the keyboard solo outro lasted forever. Exlovers - Blowing Kisses ( MP3 | Video ) Rocking shoegaze pop of the highest order. [...]

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That's 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it's one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That's no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn't keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the fourth and final installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]

Labor Day weekend, folks. Party it up, you've earned it. Here in New York, we've recently weathered earthquakes and minor hurricanes and other inconveniences. So fire up the grill, put a cold beverage in your hand and turn up the mildly twee indie pop jams on this week's mix. Cover art photo was taken by Kate Bryant at the Friends With You inflatable sculpture park which is at the upper end of the Highline park. While Labor Day is seen as the end of summer, Summer Fridays mixes will continue to the Autumn Equinox... so you get two [...]

The Limiñanas, "Je suis une go-go girl" (live in studio)

Death by Audio, one of Williamsburg's longest running DIY spaces, is probably the perfect place to catch a couple French garage rock bands. It's one of the few clubs in New York where you still leave smelling like an ashtray. I know it's a stereotype but smoking and the French do pretty much go hand-in-hand. A lot more so than rock music and the French, though both The Limiñanas and Gaz Gaz proved that not all clichés hold true. Mind you, both bands' brand of rock n' [...]

by Bill Pearis DOWNLOAD : The Limiñanas - Down Underground (MP3) All the way from Perpignan, France are The Limiñanas ' who will be touring here later this month with two stops in the NYC area: Wednesday, Aug. 17 at Death by Audio and then Thursday, Aug. 18 at Cake Shop . The group's self-titled debut on the fine Trouble in Mind label came in at #4 on my [...]

Les Bellas are a French freakbeat with layered fuzzness quartet featuring Lionel and Marie Liminana from the garage beat band The Liminanas. The irresistible "You Got my Soul", "Its a Crying Shame" are two bangers taken from the mid 60s garage books and the Wanda Jackson classic "Funnel of Love" cover are the banners on this Les Disques Steak release. BELLADELIC - LP by les disques steak

AF3458 Je Ne Suis Pas Tres Drogue ( previously on CWR) She's On My Track by Les Bellas ( previously on CWR) I'm not sure why this one has been sitting in my inbox for so long because The Liminanas and their fuzzy 60's garage sound are definitely a favorite around these parts as I've discussed here more than once . I guess this tune didn't come with news of a new LP release so it inadvertently sat on the backburner for a [...]

The seductive nonchalance of Perpignan's The Limiñanas immediately brings to mind a young Velvet Underground—albiet in French—especially the fuzzy tonal influence of John Cale. The drifting distorted guitars, the unhurried percussive stroll, and even-keeled vocal delivery all clearly demonstrate this group knows how to play it cool. Back in March, the Limiñanas put out a 7" on SDZ Records featuring the track "AF3458." The mysterious title lends itself well to the group's vintage and vaguely psychedelic 1960s aesthetic. Here, a march of drums, tambourine, and finger-picked acoustic guitar work their way into a hypnotic trance before a wave [...]

SDZ , the French label that (along with Les Disques Steaks) brought us Les Bellas record from last year is back with two very worthy 7-inch singles that are well worth paying trans Atlantic shipping costs to get your hands on. The Mantles sound like they could be on Flying Nun, but since they're from California, that would be impossible. They've taken their jangly Byrds influenced sound to a number of labels over the years including Siltbreeze, Slumberland and Mexican Summer. Their latest single lands in France and the A-side [...]

Jacuzzi Boys / Vivian Girls - Bruise Cruise Vol. 2 7" The first, but not the last, one of these great splits to show up here; these great little gifts were given out to attendees of this year's inaugural Bruise Cruise. The remaining 500 of each have now been spread to the general populace and thankfully so because there are some great gems to be found on them. On the A-side of Vol. 2, Jacuzzi Boys give us even more reason to have high expectations for that upcoming full length; a taught, swampy [...]

The Limiñanas have a new single out on French label, SDZ Records . The track is titled "AF3458" and is more catchy jangly pop rock from this wonderful French band. The single is the follow up to the band's debut s/t LP on Trouble In Mind which can be found here . AF3458
