A few weeks -- er, months (time, where you at?!) -- back, I heard a song called "New France" by Orbital, an electronic duo out of Sevenoaks, England. At that particular moment, I had no idea who they were, but soon came to discover the duo of Phil and Paul Hartnoll has been making music since 1989. What drew me to the song, outside of its great production and pacing, was its rather incoherent vocal hook, courtesy of Zola Jesus. Bristling with anger, this epic rock rouser from Kent (meh - it's near London) sixpiece Lion is the most pulsating song I've heard in yonks. The guitars carve out grimly-determined chords, while the singer seems to scream with the last, starchiest realms of his throat; listening almost has to involve an furrowed face, as if the music's very intensity translates physically. If it were a food, Lion Share ( mp3 ) would be a mustard-and-adrenaline burger ; if it were a car, a snarky old Mustang that refuses to go quietly. A grey heron at the Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam swoops into the lions' cage and probably, most definitely, regrets that decision immediately. Lions comes off their new album Mad Bits which was released on Valentine's Day. For a band of only two, they definitely don't sound like they are lacking anything in terms of orchestration. The build up is very elegant and cleanly engineered, the drop isn't crazy, but the heavy bass gives it a rolling progressive feel that puts you in another dimension.
