Listen to Mercy, Mercy and [...]

Sometime around late January I realized I was completely and utterly bored with my music archive. To shake things up I'm trying an experiment: for the remainder of 2011 I will only listen to music released in 2011. This is an account of the year. This Week's Purchases Dynamite Steps The Twilight Singers Buy It Hey, have you heard the new Afghan Whigs [...]

by teepoo Winnipeg's The Liptonians, are set to release their album next month on February 8 . It will be titled Let's All March Back In the Sea . You Know I Did will be part of that album. At first, I thought the Liptonians were named after Lipton noodle soup, but I found out there's actually a street in Winnipeg called Lipton Street. The Liptonians- You Know I Did MYSPACE
Winnipeg's The Liptonians return with songs about talking pianos, dying cities and garden-haunting ghosts on their sophomore disc, Let's All March Back Into the Sea . Last heard from on their 2008 debut, Matt Schellenberg and Bucky Driedger (the band's founders) holed up in a rural cabin to to go over the songs they'd already written, allow inspiration to lead them to songs that they had yet to write, and get set to bring more of their grandiose, orchestral pop sound to the world. The album is produced by Mike Petkau, Matt [...]

Dan Mangan (Vancouver, BC) Nice, Nice, Very Nice [mp3] Dan Mangan - Robots Elsewhere: Pick of the Week #42 A couple of months ago you couldn't go anywhere, and when I say "anywhere" I mean a Canadian based or Canadian music blog, without hearing about Dan Mangan. The best thing about this (or that, depending on where you're reading this... not that these other sites aren't good) here blog is that people send me music (for free!), which incidentally is also the worst thing about this (not that) blog. As I discussed with Jonathan of Ketch Harbour Wolves , this internet thing has allowed just about everyone and their grandmother to make their music available, and as you may have guessed not all of them are good (but a good number of them get sent to me!). But, thankfully, one in every, [...]

web site When we first stumbled upon The Liptonians , it was courtesy of the bouncing piano pop track Charlie's Back . That song was one of the last entries on our Manitoba mixtape and after soaking in the shimmering piano ditty, we waited patiently for the band to send over their self-titled release. I kind of expected a collection of twinkled ivories, boomed horns and energy that topped the meter, and while the instruments that make up the tracks are pretty consistent, the record is more subdued and measured. [...]

Wow. This one took forever and a day to finish, but the end results are pretty stellar. We had some delays on songs, a redesign of the cover art (who knew that Winnipeg was lousy with ' Keeping it Riel ' shirts and our idea wasn't original) and general half assedry on our side. Luckily, by waiting we got some absolute treats for you guys: A Ruby Jean & the Thoughtful Bees remix of I Hate Dell by Oldfolks Home. [...]
