Charlie Mayfair – 'Tell Her' (video)

Charlie Mayfair - 'Tell Her' [Official Music Video]
Click here to view the embedded video. Charlie Mayfair are the indie-kids you bitch about in your corner of the local hipster tavern, cradling your broken egos over cider and tacos. They're a reminder that you'll never be quite as cool or as successful - or as beautiful and surprisingly charming. Unfortunately, they're also genuinely gorgeous & fantastic musicians who are producing great tracks without fail. This is the video clip for Tell Her, a song I covered earlier in the year. Director Jefferton James and [...]

Tours: The Living End (Australia) The Living End has announced some sporadic tour dates in anticipation of their upcoming full-length The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating , due out July 22, 2011 . Click below for the details. The band has also unveiled a new video for the album's title track, which unfortunately is only viewable in Australia. We'll repost it once there's a worldwide link up for the clip, but in the meantime perhaps some reminiscing with old videos like this and this will help ease the pain of not [...]

Coldplay, Kanye West headline Splendour in the Grass 2011

Coldplay, Kanye West headline Splendour in the Grass 2011 Sure, we've got Coachella and Bonnaroo and all those great American festivals over here. England's got Glastonbury and Bestival, etc. Australia's got its share of great fests, as well, and Splendour in the Grass is one of the best. Last year saw the Pixies, The Strokes, and Mumford and Sons atop a massive lineup, and this year looks to be equally epic. Coldplay, Kanye West and Jane's Addiction will headline the 11th incarnation of the three day festivities at Woodfordia in Queensland. Seventy-nine other acts are under them, and the names are just as exciting. The Hives, the [...]

Fong Songs 101 All-Time Covers: #19 to 16

Fong Songs 101 All-Time Covers: #19 to 16 ============================== =============== Just joining us? I'm counting down 101 of my all-time favourite covers before packing this blog away in the attic. Read my countdown preamble here . ============================== =============== 19. Ben Folds - Songs of Love [originally by The Divine Comedy] As you all probably know, I'm a sucker for all things Ben Folds does. My only problem was choosing from a ton of covers both solo and with Ben Folds Five, but I decided to go with this unheralded cover from Ben's Sunny 16 EP. A different mix [...]

Covering CCR

I've been on a Creedence Clearwater Revival kick lately and that's as good a reason as any to share some good CCR covers. This may also have something to do with the recent 12-pack of CCR DLC for Rock Band (oodles of fun!) that's also spurred on the clearly corresponding revival of Creedence on the ol' iPod. Girl Trouble - Commotion [originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival] Shortstack - Commotion [originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival] One of my favourite all-time CCR songs, the killer guitar intro gets me every time. [...]

Live from Australia!

A recent tweet from Cover Me 's Ray tipped me off about the Australian website Moshcam.com , whose goal is to bring live music to the masses through quality video recordings for free. They've got hundreds of FULL concerts and there are definitely some gems in there. A selection for your consideration with, of course, a covers breakdown: 2007/12/17 Amanda Palmer -lots o' covers here. Amanda takes on Jason Webley, Regina Spektor, Radiohead, Rihanna, and Leonard Cohen. 2008/02/21 [...]

Hottest songs of all time?

Hottest songs of all time? Last week Triple J announced its most recent Hottest 100 Songs of All Time countdown, as voted on by the public, and as is always the case with such things, I read the list with varying amounts of dismay and incredulity. And a large amount of "I shouldn't care about this so why am I allowing this foolishness to piss me off?" I won't bore you all with my pithy shallow analysis, but I will say this - while I don't mind Nirvana and I quite like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', I certainly don't think it's the 'hottest song of [...]

The Living End, Children Collide new Canadian releases

Toronto's Dine Alone Records has scored a nice coup with the signing of a pair of Aussie bands. The indie label will be bringing Children Collide and The Living End back to Canada. You're probably familiar with The Living End. They've had decent radio play here with songs like "Prisoner of Society" and "Roll On".Later this summer the label will release Children Collide's The Long Now as well

THE LIVING END

THE LIVING END Australian punk / rockabilly band The Living End began their career as a Stray Cats cover band known as The Runaway Boys . Over the years they, obviously, started writing their own songs, and changed their name, but have maintained a bit of that Stray Cats' rockabilly attitude. They're huge in their native land, but despite having a large following in The States, they have only had some limited success on the charts here. [...]

LABEL FOCUS -MODULAR

LABEL FOCUS -MODULAR Remember Label Focus? We covered Kitsuné back in October, and it's kind of taken a back seat since then (the feature, not the label!) but we're back today, with the label highest on my 'to feature' list - Modular. It's also their 10 th birthday, so what better time to give them a little attention. 10 years ago, Australian promoter Steve Pavlovic put out debut albums by The Living End and The Avalanches, changing the music scene there forever. Before long, innovative electronic-based music was taking over Jet and The Vines which had [...]

List 'Em Carefully: Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda

List 'Em Carefully: Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda Ever search through your record collection and see some records that make you stop and think to yourself, "Why wasn't this record bigger than it should have been?" Exactly. Every once in a while we'll come across a record and it seems everything is perfect: the tunes, the solos, the lyrics and the works. However for some strange reason it never seemed to catch on. There's both a blessing and a curse to this theory. The blessing comes from the fact that because it didn't catch on, but also because you were on to it, it means so [...]

Behold “Bike Hero”, the best thing you will see all day

So apparently, a bunch of suburban kids had loads of time on their hands, an insane love for Guitar Hero , and a ridiculous work ethic. The proof is below, a note-for-note, score-for-score, and star-power for star-power exact replica of Guitar Hero brought to life for the viral video generation. Here's the deal: one kid rides his bike with a camera on his head and records it all, the overall sensation being that you're pretty much LIVING a song on Guitar Hero (in this case The Living End's "Prisoner of Society"). The [...]

Music Down Under

Music Down Under True to my word to my friend Matt, and the fact I should really pay some attention to my own roots, I'm gonna approach some lovely Australian music today. Matt had some suggestions: Gyroscope, Potbelleez, The Living End, The Presets and Faker. Now I can't approach them all, mainly because I'm supposed to be working at the moment, and I frankly don't know enough about some of them to make informed opinions, but consider them all recommendations from Matt. The Living End's new single "White Noise" is a breezy shot of pop-rock, with some nice melodic vocals put [...]

Where We Live: The Paradise - Boston, MA

Where We Live: The Paradise - Boston, MA Since I started playing guitar at the age of twelve, I've performed and attended a ton of shows over the years. Some are distant memories, others somewhat hazy and forgettable. However, there are only a handful of shows that turn out to be true gems. April 11th, 2001 at The Paradise in Boston, Massachusetts which featured Boston's Lost City Angels , Quincy, MA natives Kicked In The Head (R.I.P) and Australia's powerhouse trio The Living End , is one of those shows that changed my life. Sophomore year of high school, at sixteen years [...]
