"Enden Er Naer!" Those are the words on the lips of many (most of them German - others just say "end is nigh") as scientists prepare to smash some particles into each other in Switzerland, planned for tomorrow, Wednesday 10th of September. It's not often I show much interest in what scientists waste their time doing, but with this particular particle-smashing, there's the slightest possibility it could effect me. There's various theories of mini black holes, massive explosions, you know the type. Actually, it's more likely that my house will fall down on top of me at this very [...]
THE LIVING END just released their new album, White Noise in the UK and Australia. The biggest bummer might be that it's not in out in the states yet ( Adeline , you putting this one out?) But fear not, due to the magic of the internet we're still able to see the first video for the album's single and title track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =rLC1YOaGwRY

I claimed that Frenzal Rhomb were Australia's best band a few posts ago . I'd obviously overlooked The Living End. They perform with far more energy than Frenzal Rhomb, but their songs are generally less singalongish. End Of The World was the first song I heard by them, after it was featured on Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (the ultimate mix tape). It still remains my favourite, even though they've written plenty of other great ones. The Living End - End Of The World (mp3, 1.7mb) The Living End - What's On Your [...]

In exactly one month, July 19th, The Living End will release their latest album White Noise . I've mentioned them here and there, but never really given them their proper due on Fong Songs, which is remarkable because A) They're one of my favourite bands B) They're very cover friendly In fact, I consider their Tainted Love as bit of a modern cover classic and it's the song that introduced me to the band. After repeatedly digesting the cover, I was compelled to check out their 1998 self-titled debut and its [...]
The Living End were quite possible the first best live band I ever saw. What I mean by that statement is that The Living End were the first band I saw live that blew me away, that showed me what a phenomenal live show should be. And Green Day are...well, I don't really need to give background on Green Day. What do these two bands have in common? Well, I discovered long ago an incredibly striking resemblance between a certain Living End song and a certain Green Day song. Bloody Mary, from The Living [...]
This Episode is to celebrate the stupidly fast sell-out of Big Day Out and is designed to make those who got tickets feel good about themselves and those who didn't cry. It's also the first time I've delved into area of 'specials' - in other words 'easy way outs' for me. It contains songs by the bands I recommend from the first announcement. I decided not to use The White Stripes or Franz Ferdinand because they're pretty well known already and I think everyone has they're minds made up whether they'll see them or not. And so here they are: [...]

"I vowed that I'm never going to forget the lessons of that day," G.W. Bush said at a 9/11 memorial event on Sunday, and he meant it. The lessons in question being that a weak joke of a president can exploit a national tragedy to reposition himself as a strong leader and be granted a free hand to pursue whatever insane schemes he desires to, as long as they’re parsed in terms of national security and delivered with the basest sort of fear mongering. Bush and his cabal have taken those lessons to heart, using the events of 9/11 to [...]
